Q1 2018 Industry Report: Floor Heating Growth Due to Ecommerce Sales
A video summation of the report is available here.
This year has started strong for sales of radiant heating products like floor heating systems and towel warmers, which have benefited greatly from record setting increases in sales from ecommerce sites like Amazon and online sales from traditional big-box stores like Home Depot and Costco.
This is in spite of a continued lack of available housing inventory which is causing a sustained increase in national median home sale prices (up nearly 6% between March 2018 and March 2017), which has in turn limited total home sales.
The first quarter growth of ecommerce sales also led to some interesting shifts in product performances within their respective categories such as the emergence of towel warmers as a core product line for WarmlyYours and the Prodeso Cable Installation membrane becoming the number one underlayment by sales volume.
In this report, we’ll take a closer look at the causes of these developments along with analyzing the performance of radiant heating product sales within the larger context of the remodeling and housing markets, along with offering some of our market projections for Q2 2018.
Tumblr media
First Quarter 2018: E-tailer and Heating Cable Sales Lead Radiant Heating Increases
In addition to first quarter growth of 26.2% within the wholesaler market (primarily flooring and electrical suppliers), WarmlyYours saw sizeable increases in direct online sales. Pure online sales made on the WarmlyYours website started the year strong in January before dipping in February and then rallying at the close of the quarter, which resulted in a 5.16% net gain. Much of this can be attributed to concerted efforts to optimize the WarmlyYours website and to streamline the purchasing process online.
The first quarter of this year also saw an acceleration of a multi-year trend toward growing ecommerce sales for electric radiant heating products. Despite sustained and continued growth for several concurrent quarters, Q1 2018 saw an incredible upsurge of 37.3% in total ecommerce sales volume. Sales of WarmlyYours radiant heating products via ecommerce channels increased from 3.2% of total sales to 11.4% this quarter. Ecommerce channels such as Home Depot (up 36.7%) and e-tailers (up 13.9%) certainly played a part in this growth, but it was Amazon which contributed the fastest growth and the largest sales volume increase by channel.  The nearly 250% first quarter growth was so significant that Amazon actually had to be separated from the general “e-tailers” channel for data reporting purposes.
Tumblr media
Within Amazon sales, first quarter growth was led by electric floor heating products including underlayments and heating elements which grew at 447.5% and 107.5% respectively. Amazon itself had a very impressive Q1 with a quarterly revenue of $51.04 billion (up 43% from the prior year). However, most of this growth was attributed to their AWS cloud service and increases in ad-spend from vendors; so, growth in radiant heating sales resists the easy explanation of an expanded marketplace and instead suggests the possibility of emerging changes in consumer behaviors.
It could be that as the ever-increasing product offering of Amazon expands, more and more DIYers and trade professionals are turning to the ecommerce giant as a one-stop-shop for a huge variety of building/remodeling materials. Julia Billen, owner and president of WarmlyYours said that there will always be market share for direct sales because of value-add services.
“For many customers, using Amazon is a matter of convenience,” said Billen. “But there will always be value-add services, like custom installation plans for electric floor heating, that Amazon just isn’t equipped to provide.”
Tumblr media
The floor heating combination that has garnered the most traction for Amazon sales (and for sales in general) is our TempZone Floor Heating Cable partnered with the Prodeso Cable Installation Membrane, both of which grew 17.1% and 42% respectively. This combination is popular with both homeowners and trade pros for the long-lasting uncoupling benefits it provides for tile floors and for the speedy installation times compared to traditional underfloor heating systems. This quarter officially marks the first time, since its launch in late 2015, that the Prodeso membrane has outsold CeraZorb to become the top underlayment by volume sales. Prodeso made up 56% of underlayment sales in Q1 2018 and CeraZorb was down to 38%. While uncoupling and insulating underlayments have drastically different uses and benefits, this shift could further indicate developments in how installers are approaching radiant heating systems. We fully expect to see continued growth for the pairing of heating cable and uncoupling membranes.
The product category with the largest volume increase for Amazon sales was towel warmers which grew by 407.7% in the first quarter. This has led towel warmers to go from 13% of all WarmlyYours sales in Q1 2017 to 18% in the same period this year. The fastest growing models were the Riviera (up 101.3%), the Infinity (up 71.8%), the Elements (up 49.3%), and the Metropolitan (up 22.4%). The Riviera now makes up 28% of all towel warmer sales while the Infinity makes up 33%.
Tumblr media
With the release of more towel warmer models and collections throughout 2018, we fully expect to see this product line continue to grow as well.
Remodeling Projections Look Optimistic Despite Continued Housing Inventory Crunch
2018 has started off strong for most vectors of the national economy, including a first quarter national unemployment rate that was 0.57% lower than prior-year-period and a 2.3% increase rate for the GDP. However, one component of the economy that continues to stutter-step is the housing market, which is nearing a plateau of sales activity due to unit pricing outpacing production and supply, leading to high average sale prices for homes across the country.
By the end of Q1 2018, home prices had reached March median home sale prices not seen since before the recession. According to Redfin, which tracks 174 different markets, the median home price had increased 8.9%. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) has the median price at 5.8% up from last year and the U.S. Census Bureau has the figure up at 4.8%. While there may be some disagreement about the degree, all sources concur that the shortage of available housing is stifling sales activity in an otherwise healthy economy.
In a press release, Lawrence Yun, chief economist for NAR, said that the primary issue facing most homebuyers (particularly potential first-time buyers) is the same issue that they’ve faced for several quarters in a row: astronomical home prices from low supply and high demand.
“Much of the country is enjoying a thriving job market, but buying a home is becoming more expensive,” said Yun. “That is why it is an absolute necessity for there to be a large increase in new and existing homes available for sale in coming months to moderate home price growth. Otherwise, sales will remain stuck in this holding pattern and a growing share of would-be buyers — especially first-time buyers — will be left on the sidelines.”
Tumblr media
Because of this inventory crunch, pending home sales and existing home sales were down 3% and 1.2% respectively.
However, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel as the U.S. Census Bureau has identified that there was a significant year-over-year increase in building permits (up 7.5%), housing starts (up 10.9%), and housing completions (up 1.9%) by the end of March 2018. While this will not result in an immediate reversal of supply issues, it may indicate that market forces are moving toward long-term alleviation.
Despite the stifled housing market, the most recent Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA), a quarterly publication released by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, the future of remodeling looks bright. In fact, the LIRA projects that annual growth in homeowner remodeling expenditures will remain above 7% into 2019, when annual spending is set to exceed $340 billion. Chris Herbert, the managing director of the Joint Center, said that homeowners are motivated, in part, by increased home values to remodel.
“Strengthening employment conditions and rising home values are encouraging homeowners to make greater investments in their homes,” said Herbert. “Upward trends in retail sales of building materials and the growing number of remodeling permits indicate that homeowners are doing more—and larger—improvement projects.”
Projected Electric Radiant Heating Growth in the Second Quarter of 2018
Every quarter, WarmlyYours identifies several metro markets where growth in radiant heating is expected. The Q1 2018 projections identified New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles as potential growth areas with expected rates of change in total sales of 10%, 6%, and 25%, respectively. The New York and Washington, D.C. actual rates of change were well within the 5% margin of error for the projections but Los Angeles surprised us by growing an impressive 54.8%.
We’ve identified 3 metro markets where we expect to see the largest increases in the second quarter of this year: Kansas City, Dallas, and Indianapolis. Since we’re moving into the summer building season, our expectations are high for Q2 2018.
In Kansas City, the median home price is 25% lower than the national average, while an affordable standard of living is drawing in more potential homebuyers. With this influx of new homeowners, we fully expect radiant heating sales to grow 130% in the second quarter of this year.
The Dallas housing market has been red-hot for several quarters in a row. Q1 2018 home prices are up 6% over 2017, but the year prior to that, the prices had increased 13%. And even though it’s expected to cool somewhat, we think that continued home sales will help push radiant heating sales up by 115% in Q2.
With low median home prices (31% lower than the national average) and a relatively low unemployment rate (3.0% in March 2018 vs. the national average of 4.1%), and a first quarter increase in pending home sales of 4.3%, we expect to see radiant heating sales increase 230% in Indianapolis. However, this could be tempered by the 0.6% decrease in first quarter home sales for the city.
Julia Billen, the owner and president of WarmlyYours, said that by identifying the regional markets that are expected to grow in radiant heating sales, the company is able to dynamically respond to consumer needs as they develop.
“Our sales efforts have never been more mobile or responsive and that’s due in large part to our analysis of both national trends and consumer behaviors,” said Billen. “At some point, we’ll be so far ahead we’ll practically have the floor warm for the customer by the time they decide to buy!”

WarmlyYours Report: Q1 2018 Electric Floor Heating Sales Driven by Amazon
A video summation of the report is available here.
LAKE ZURICH, Ill., May 16, 2018 — A recent industry report found that first quarter sales of radiant heating products, particularly electric floor heating systems, were driven by ecommerce channels like Amazon.
WarmlyYours Radiant Heating, a manufacturer specializing in electric floor heating systems, released their “First Quarter 2018 Industry Report” earlier this week. One of the primary findings of the report was that the largest driver for Q1 sales volume growth was an increase in sales of radiant heating products via ecommerce channels. Despite sustained and continued growth for several concurrent quarters, ecommerce sales grew an impressive 37.3% in Q1 2018 to constitute 11.4% of all WarmlyYours sales (up from 3.2% in Q1 2017).
Amazon was a standout performing channel with nearly 250% growth in sales year-over-year. The radiant heating product categories with the fastest rates of growth in Amazon sales were floor heating underlayments (up 447.5%), towel warmers (up 407.7%), and floor heating elements (up 107.5%). On Amazon, and in general WarmlyYours sales, the fastest growing product combo was yet again the Prodeso uncoupling membrane paired with TempZone electric floor heating cable, which grew 42% and 17.1% respectively. This quarter also marked the first time that the Prodeso membrane was the highest selling floor heating underlayment, making up 56% of sales in this product category.
Tumblr media
Despite the ecommerce giant posting huge first quarter gains, most of Amazon’s revenue came from their AWS cloud service and ad-spend by vendors so growth in radiant heating sales resists the easy explanation of an expanded marketplace and instead suggests the possibility of emerging changes in consumer behaviors.
Julia Billen, owner and president of WarmlyYours said that there will always be market share for both third party ecommerce and direct sales of radiant heating products because of value-add services.
“For many customers, using Amazon is a matter of convenience,” said Billen. “But there will always be value-add services, like custom installation plans for electric floor heating, that Amazon just isn’t equipped to provide.”

Radiant Heating is not Just for Inside Your Home
When you think of radiant heating, you probably think of warm floors underfoot or ceiling or wall panels that bring energy efficient comfort into your rooms. But there are plenty of ways that radiant heating can add to your enjoyment of your outdoor living space, saving your money and improving your quality of life.
Radiant heat can be used to make a dramatic change to a patio, as well as your walkways and driveway. Imagine being able to gear up to walk your dog on a winter night without having to worry about ice or snow on your walkway. When a radiant heating systems is installed under a driveway, it can eliminate the need for salting, shoveling, or paying a service to come and keep the driveway safe and clear. While these systems won’t provide comfort heating (so January cookouts in shorts will still be kind of tough), the melting of snow and ice can mean a significant increase in the usability of your outdoor surfaces all year long.
The best time to consider radiant heating for your outdoor living space is while it is under construction, so whether you are building a new home or contemplating demolition of a dated, time-worn deck for replacement with something that’s updated and more relevant to your lifestyle today, now’s the time to investigate.
Costs of Radiant Heating
Though you may assume this type of project is expensive, a quick investigation reveals that heating a standard 3-foot wide walkway a length of 15 feet can cost as little as $385 USD for supplies. Compare that to the time and expense involved with shoveling (whether you’re doing it yourself or paying somebody else), as well as the potential costs of a liability lawsuit if somebody slips and falls on your icy driveway/walkway.  If you’re considering a radiant heating system for your driveway, snow melting mats are probably a smarter way to go, as they are both easier and faster to install and more appropriate for a large area. They are slightly higher in cost than the more labor-intensive snow melting cables.
Check out this quick install video using electric snow melting mats!

Expanding Your Enjoyment of Your Outdoor Space
As lifestyles change and people become more interested in spending time with family and friends, outdoor areas that were once utilized for nothing but backyard swings are being expanded into extensions of living rooms and kitchens. By installing radiant heating on a backyard patio, you are able to get more out of your investment in these outdoor spaces by keeping outdoor flooring from being damaged by ice and snow. With the right kind of insulated windows, radiant heating panels can add months more use to multi-season rooms efficiently and effectively.

Diary of a Snow Shoveler: Funny story or cautionary tale? You decide
This post, called “Diary of a Snow Shoveler,” has made the rounds on the internet for many years and it’s just too good not to share now that we’re out of the woods, so to speak, with this year’s winter.
Pictured: Actual human misery
While the original author of the “diary” is no longer known, there are certainly some theories. Some say it was a poor Floridian that had just moved to Minnesota. Others think it was written by a Michigander that finally had “enough” one early June blizzard. We may never know who wrote it, but we do know 2 things:
1.) As long as it’s not snowing when you’re reading it, it’s pretty funny
2.) This poor guy could have used a snow melting system from WarmlyYours.
We’ve posted the diary below but we’ve also included a great YouTube video interpretation.
youtube
Diary of a Snow Shoveler
December 9: We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I’ve ever had. I shoveled snow for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again! What a perfect life.
December 12: The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we’ll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we’ll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I’ll never want to see snow again. l don’t think that’s possible. Bob is such a nice man – I’m glad he’s our neighbor.
December 14: Snow, lovely snow! 8″ last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. l didn’t realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I’ll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn’t huff and puff so.
December 15: 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4×4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife’s car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that’s silly. We aren’t in Alaska, after all.
December 16: Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.
December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should’ve bought a wood stove, but won’t admit it to her. God I hate it when she’s right. I can’t believe I’m freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20: Electricity’s back on, but had another 14″ of stupid snow last night. More shoveling. Took all day. That stupid snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they’re too busy playing hockey. I think they’re lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they’re out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they’re lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he’s lying.
December 22: Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white stuff fell today, and it’s so cold it probably won’t melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to use the restroom. By the time I got undressed, went and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he’s too busy. I think the jerk is lying.
December 23: Only 2″ of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts? Why didn’t she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did, but I think she’s lying.
December 24: 6″ today. Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the jerk who drives that snowplow, I’ll drag him through the snow by his hair. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at about 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I’ve just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was busy watching for that stupid snowplow.
December 25: Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the !=3D@x@!x!x1 slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she’s an idiot. If I have to watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” one more time, I’m going to kill her.
December 26: Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She’s really getting on my nerves.
December 27: Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze.
December 28: Warmed up to above -50. Still snowed in. THAT WOMAN is driving me crazy!!!!!
December 29: 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That’s the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?
December 30: Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a million dollars. The wife went home to her mother. 9″ predicted.
December 31: Set fire to what’s left of the house. No more shoveling.
January 8: I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?
Snow melting saves lives… or at least your back
Sure, it’s funny now, but you won’t be laughing when the snow starts falling again next winter. Avoid the headache and get a free quote for a snow melting system for your driveway now.

How Much Does Floor Heating Cost in Dayton, OH?
Dayton is the sixth-largest city in the state of Ohio and the county seat of Montgomery County. The region is just north of Cincinnati and has a population of around 1 million people making it Ohio’s fourth-largest metropolitan area, after Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus. Thanks to the Wright brothers, Dayton is the historic birthplace of powered flight.
Dayton’s climate is classified as a humid continental climate. On average, there are 4.5 nights of sub-zero degrees Fahrenheit lows annually. Based on currentresults.com temperatures are coldest in January with highs around 36 degrees Fahrenheit and lows around 22 degrees. Snow is moderate, with a normal seasonal accumulation of 23.3 inches (59 centimeters) usually occurring from November to March.
It’s Easy to Add Affordable In-floor Heating From the Bathroom and Kitchen to Any Room in Your Home
Recent data on listing terms when selling a home uncovered some popular home features, among those heated/radiant floors. It makes sense that if people are looking to buy a home with these amenities, then existing homeowners should consider them when remodeling. WarmlyYours has an underfloor heating system for most any application and any room in your home. Here are some room examples along with compatible flooring selections.
No More Cold Bathroom Tile with Underfloor Heating
These Dayton homeowners needed to warm up the elegant but cold tile flooring in their newly remodeled bathroom, so they decided to add radiant floor heating to their medium master bath. Radiant heating is the perfect solution to bring welcoming warmth and luxury to your daily routine.
Tumblr media
Cost per Square Foot of Radiant Warmth and Low Operating Cost Make This Bathroom Affordably Cozy
For their project, these owners selected a 1.5- by 38-foot TempZone
Tumblr media
Flex Roll to install in their 70-square-foot bathroom. The cost was only $598.50 or $10.50 per square foot. In addition to the material cost, the operating cost should also be factored into the remodeling budget. WarmlyYours’ Operating Cost Calculator figures in the average kWh cost in Dayton of 11.79 cents resulting in a daily cost of 43 cents to heat this bathroom for four hours a day, a small price to pay for the comfort and luxury of a soothingly warm bathroom tile floor. Furthermore, the system can be the primary heating source for the room which is an additional cost and energy savings advantage.
Calculating Costs for Heating Up a Laminate Kitchen Floor
As their kitchen was one of the most used rooms in their home, these Dayton homeowners knew it made sense to add electric in-floor heating when planning their kitchen remodeling project.  To warm up the stylish but cold laminate flooring they had selected they chose to install an Environ Flex Roll floor heating system in the 123 square foot space for $860.00 at a cost of approximately $12.00 per square foot. The Flex Roll consists of an insulated heating cable sandwiched between two layers of reinforced, durable aluminum foil that radiates 12 watts per square foot.
Tumblr media
Around 75 Cents a Day Will Heat This Kitchen Flooring
Factoring in the cost for operating the system is important when planning your budget. WarmlyYours has a useful online tool to help you do just that. Based on WarmlyYours’s Operating Cost Calculator it costs just 76 cents to heat this kitchen for eight hours a day. An added bonus is that this system can be a primary heat source for the room without incurring additional heating bills.
TempZone
Tumblr media
Cable Warms up this Office for Less than a Dollar a Day
This homeowner decided to install radiant heating during a recent remodeling of their home office to minimize the winter chill. The system was designed to heat the floors of their office with 300 feet (75 square feet) of 120-volt TempZone
Tumblr media
Cable for $480.00. That amounts to just $6.40 per square foot. By adding a nHance programmable thermostat for $169, it brought the total to $649.00.
Tumblr media
Operating Cost is Low to Heat Underneath Wood Flooring
It’s important to consider the operating cost of your floor heating system when budgeting for your own project. WarmlyYours makes it easy for you with our Operating Cost Calculator. Based on the data from this tool, the cost to operate this system for 8 hours a day is just 46 cents. This calculator factors in the average kWh cost in Dayton, which is just slightly less than 12 cents. Best of all, this radiant heating system can be the primary heat source for the room so there’s no need for additional heating and higher energy bills.
Add a Basement Bedroom Complete with Radiant Floor Heating
These Dayton homeowners decided to add a basement bedroom for visiting friends and family, but were concerned about the cold basement floor. They discovered that electric radiant floor heating would be an ideal solution to that dilemma. They immediately ordered a WarmlyYours underfloor heating system for installation under new laminate flooring to keep the guest bedroom comfortably cozy during the winter rainy season.
Tumblr media
Product Cost per Square Foot, Plus Operating Cost for the System
The 1.5- by 52-foot TempZone
Tumblr media
flex roll fills 78 square feet of floor space and costs $741, which equates to just $9.50 per square foot. The flex roll is easy to cut and turn to effectively fill the floor space with 15 watts per square foot of soothing radiant heat. They were also pleasantly surprised to find that operating the in-floor heating is also affordable. According to WarmlyYours’ Operating Cost Calculator, it only costs 48 cents a day to heat this bedroom for eight hours.  The floor heating system can be the primary heat source for this room, so there won’t be any additional heating bills which is a welcome bonus.
Our Easy to Use Operating Cost Calculator Gives Cost To Run An In-floor Heating System
After you’ve chosen your floor heating system including how you’ll use it, you can calculate how much it will cost to operate. Actually, the calculating is done for you with the Operating Cost Calculator, a useful online tool that asks basic project questions; product type, room size, local energy rate and daily usage in order to calculate the daily, monthly and annual operating cost of your system. For large applications, or additional areas, you may have to combine the nJoin power module with your nSpiration Series thermostat.
nSpire Touch Wifi Programmable
Control your floor heating system with your smartphone or on the web with the nSpire Touch WiFi thermostat. The added ability to be controlled remotely can accommodate busy schedules. It also offers substantial energy savings without sacrificing comfort or convenience.
nSpire Touch Programmable
It’s easy to set up a radiant heating system according to your preferences and schedule with the integrated Install Wizard included with the nSpire Touch. With 4 programmable events for each day of the week, the nSpire Touch allows you maximum control over the floor temperature.
nHance Programmable
You can easily set this control up for your exact needs and specifications with the nHance intuitive user-interface. For consistent schedules, it will deliver a maximum level of comfort when you need it most, like during your morning routine, while still keeping your overall energy use to a minimum.
nTrust Non-Programmable
Ease and reliability are benefits of the nTrust  thermostat. Because there is no programming required for the nTrust dual voltage (120V/240V) control, you can just set it for your desired temperature and then sit back and relax.
