chapter 1/2/?
word count: 4.2k
summary: starting afresh at Seoul National University, driving her passion for swimming forward, Yeri has attained the sturdy course of Sports Ed. as her four-year study.
During Yeri's first week, it's trouble at home but nervous glances and sweaty palms as she meets bio-engineering student Jeon Jungkook, who is currently living on campus. Jungkook was everything the perfect male college student was. Tall, lean, smart, not necessarily on the football team but he was something that Yeri almost yearned for.
The only problem was keeping this whole thing a secret from her asshole, drug-addict brother, Min Yoongi.
Soft, creamy white cheese spread onto the crisp surface of a freshly toasted bagel was a way in which Yeri liked to start her school day at eight in the morning before a lengthy practice. And of course, the morning was very much incomplete with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice if she was bothered. If she was running behind, then a small carton of milk was the way to go but thankfully, she almost sprung out of bed as soon as her alarm went off.
Jeon Jungkook didn't know what compelled Yeri to say 'yes' to the lunch date he proposed, and to be honest, neither did she. Well, she maybe sort of had a rough idea. Jungkook was everything she found cute in a guy, not to mention he was drop dead smart by what Nora's been telling her. Apparently he's almost always getting 90% and above in their exams and the whole bioengineering department basically loved him. It was no wonder really, someone as smart, polite and handsome as Jungkook pretty much got everything in life.
The only thing that Yeri has yet to know is that Jungkook has near to no experience with the opposite sex, which, fingers-crossed, she'd probably like to change.
Today was even warmer than yesterday, so Yeri simply wore a maroon fitted shirt tucked into high-waisted denim shorts, throwing on a pair of Converses for a simple look not too overdone.
To add to Yeri's delightful mood, she remembered how last night's events have been fairly peaceful compared to other nights. It wasn't the best night, but a night without a nagging and shouting Yoongi were known as good nights.
Only the quiet sound of the radio filled her ears as she downed her juice and watched her brother snore lightly on the couch. Something in her stirred a mix of adoration and sympathy as she looked over his sleeping figure but she had no time to stare as her first swimming practice was in the next 45 minutes.
Yeri picked up her bag after doing the dishes and dashed out the door, making sure to close it quietly so as to not disturb her brother.
50 laps in and Yeri was finally done for the morning, not realizing that the school certainly wasn't joking in having an Olympic-sized swimming pool. She had managed to make two friends just before dipping into the pool. They were both twins, one boy called Maru and one girl called Mari, both who seemed to argue way more than the average set of 18-year old twins but Yeri found it comical nonetheless.
"That was great work today freshman, remind me of your name again?" One of the male postgraduates commented as Yeri and Mari were talking by the edge of the pool, still in the shallow end of the waters. Most people around them were getting out of the pool, ready for lunch break.
The girls both looked at each other before Mari pointed to herself. "Me?"
But to her misfortune, the senior shook his head and nodded his towards Yeri.
Yeri's eyes slightly widened. "My name's Yeri," she informally said as she got out of the pool with Mari following. "And I kind of forgot what your name is," she chuckled shyly. "Sorry."
"My name's Seokjin, but most people around here just call me Jin," he introduced, putting out his hand for her to shake.
That was when alarm bells had rung inside of Yeri's head. Despite that, she shook his hand. "I feel like I know you... Well, my brother might know you. I feel like I've heard your name... But if you don't know anyone called Yoongi then pretend that I never said anything," she quickly added in the end, narrowing her eyes as she racked her brain to match name to face.
"...You're Min Yeri?! I was just thinking that if you keep up your efforts, good things might come your way," he remarked, a congratulating smile on his lips as she took off her cap from her head. "But now that I look at you, you've really grown since I last saw you!" He grinned, remembering how he'd go over to Yoongi's house when they were young and seeing Yeri with her own group of friends but she was always too shy to say hello. "I never knew you'd be one for swimming."
Yeri shyly shrugged her shoulders as she squeezed her cap. "Yeah, well me neither," she lightly joked. "You should come by sometime and... actually maybe not," she stopped herself, not knowing whether Jin knew how Yoongi was these days.
"How is he?" Jin eventually asked and at this point Yeri's new friend, Mari, was on the edge of going crazy.
"Um, I'm lost," she pouted. "Well, that's not my name, I'm Mari if you were wondering but Yeri, didn't you say you had a date to go to after this?"
And just like that Yeri's eyes widened, a small curse escaped her lips and she bid Jin and Mari a quick goodbye before taking her towel from the side and rushing off to the shower room, trying ever so hard not to slip on the tile floors.
With damp hair tussled past her shoulders and her hand trying to help her foot go firmly into her Converses, Yeri dashed out of the swimming center, making her way through the student body that was in the sports building and found the Sun hitting her eyes in gorgeous rays. She admired the beauty that the day was, but right now she was almost twenty minutes late for her lunch date with Jungkook.
It was hard trying to check the subtly that was the result of a two-minute makeup application in the mirror whilst running towards the hub of the university's restaurants. She even bumped into people she knew along the way and it was to say that they probably thought she was crazy.
"Jesus, watch where you're going, Min!" One of her new familiar seniors, Namjoon called out as she pushed past him, Jimin and Hoseok who was on their way to the bubble tea cafe.
Yeri shouted out a sorry but by the time they turned around to see her rushing appearance, she was almost gone from their view.
It was another five minute run as she made her way towards the opposite end of the campus, and when she reached her destination, that was when she saw Jeon Jungkook standing outside. Today, his hair was a lot more tidy than yesterday, side swept, and he was dressed in a plain white t-shirt and skinny jeans, making Yeri swoon in the simplicity that was his outfit.
She panted as she slowed her running, now walking towards him with her shoulders sagging down.
"Yeri, you made it! I was beginning to think that you ditched me," he chuckled, scratching his neck but as she came closer he frowned. "Did you run here?" Jungkook asked, noting the pink hue in her cheeks and her significant panting as she placed her hands on her knees to catch her breath.
She took a couple of more breathers before she finally stood up straight, still managing to smile at him. "Yeah, I'm sorry I was so late; I was caught up in a conversation with one of the swimming instructors," she explained, adjusting her backpack on her shoulders. "Did you wait long?"
"Just ten minutes, no worries," he smiled back at her, now actually noticing her damp hair that still had water droplets dripping down the ends. "Ah! You came from swimming practice!" He said as he took a step forward to open the door for her in which she thanked him and proceeded inside.
Walking into the one of the school's Japanese restaurant, the two sat down and talked about the food and what other food was on campus before their order was taken and all they had to do was wait.
"You know this is the first time I've ever... done something like this," Jungkook started, nervously rubbing his hands together in front of him as he felt Yeri's grin.
"Well, I'm honored then," she beamed at him, making his heart do funny things. He couldn't help that he was falling for her more and more. "What made you ask?"
Jungkook pressed his lips together to suppress the smile he knew was starting to show. "Nothing, I just think you're really pretty," he truthfully said, pretty sure he could feel the heat in his cheeks show in a light red hue.
But Yeri could only smile even wider when he admitted the actual reason. To tell the truth, she had been looking forward to this moment since he left the house yesterday and she spent most of her night talking to her friends about it, some of which were jealous but still happy that she was finally getting decent boy interaction in her life.
"Thank you, if it helps I think you're pretty cute too," she shyly admitted back, and alas Jungkook had to tear his gaze from her eyes toward his own hands because he couldn't take the compliment. Noting the almost awkward atmosphere they were so close to dwelling in, Yeri quickly changed conversation. "So, bioengineering?" She asked, planting her chin on the palms of her hands. "You must be quite the smartass."
Jungkook released a low chuckle as he looked at her again, her eyes curious and waiting. "Um, no, well- I mean I have common sense but I wouldn't say I'm a know-it-all," he slowly says, rubbing his neck with his hand.
At that moment plates steaming with hot rice and delicious meat had arrived and the two dove in as quick as the it came before Jungkook cleared his throat to continue.
"A charity that helped genetic disorders gave my school a talk one day and I kind of got drawn in to the whole 'engineering biology' part, especially as Science was my best subject," Jungkook explained, wiping his mouth with his tissue and pausing to gulp down some water. "Nora must have told you I was in her class."
Yeri nodded twice. "Yeah, she did. She also told me you’re a teacher's pet," she almost giggled, finding it impossibly cute how the young man in front of her with soft, dark brown hair was the definition of a good student, "and that you could probably be the next Einstein."
Jungkook almost choked on his food, his eyes widening as he managed to swallow without dying. "I wouldn't say Einstein-"
"Ah-ha! You're not denying it," she raised a brow.
Jungkook stuffed his mouth and shook his head. "Enough about me; you're in the swimming team! Congratulations for yesterday by the way, for getting in the team," he smiled, making Yeri suddenly go shy. "My friend Taehyung got in the football team too so you might see him around."
“Oh, I’ve definitely seen him around,” Yeri chuckled, lifting her glass of water to her lips to take a sip. “He prances about the whole sports center, always singing or joking around with seniors. Are you sure he’s a freshman like us?” Yeri asked, suddenly re-thinking how someone not even in school for two weeks has caught the attention of so many people.
“Oh, no that’s just him. He isn’t even high on anything, Tae’s naturally like that,” Jungkook shook his head at the personality of his best friend.
“You sound close,” Yeri fondly suggested, the look of adoration in Jungkook’s eyes made her feel a type of warmth for some reason.
Years of friendship, fights and adventures seemed to run through his mind as not only Taehyung, but his other friends swirled in his head. Those were the good days, he thought. "Yeah, we have a group of friends here," he started. "There's seven of us actually; you actually met them yesterday. Well, I met Tae in karate class way back. Namjoon, Hoseok and Jimin are my hyungs from high school; they're in their last year here at uni and then there's Jin hyung who's a swimming instructor here... Which reminds me that I need to say hi to him, damn it," he drifted off, pouting his lips softly as he began to play with the remains of his food for a few seconds before setting down his spoon and fork.
"I know Jin! Yeah, he's one of my swimming coaches, I met him this morning!" Yeri grinned widely at how they both finally had a mutual friend. "I actually knew him since I was small, he's one of my brother's closest friends," Yeri brightly smiled at how thankful she was for Jin, and then it finally occurred to her that wait, Jungkook and Jimin came over yesterday... because? "Wait, how do you know my brother again?"
"Hm, remind me to go with you one time to say hello to hyung," Jungkook slyly said, but really he just wanted to see her practice with the added benefit of seeing the elder. "Namjoon-hyung had work experience at a record company and Suga-hyung who was also training to be a producer at the time," he recalled, specifically cutting out the part where Suga got kicked out in case Yeri didn't know, but she knew well what happened during that time.
Yeri paused. "Suga-hyung? That's what you guys call him?" And she couldn't help but think, wow, her brother had a nickname from a group of friends. All she knew was Yoongi, Yoongi and Yoongi; even Jin stuck with Yoongi. "Why 'Suga'?"
A boyish smirk was at the corner of his lips as he looked away, smiling to himself as the reason behind the nickname was one of childish remarks. "It's stupid, you don't wanna know," Jungkook had to stop himself from snorting as he closed his eye briefly before opening them again.
"But I do," Yeri pouted and softly nudged his hand with hers, unknowingly sending a spark up both of their arms though they did their best to ignore it.
Jungkook didn't even try to suppress his grin. "He's the only one who didn't like sugar in his tea so Namjoon-hyung kind of made fun of him and it just stuck with us, I guess... He was even gonna make it his producer name."
Yeri found herself suppressing a snort but before she could even reply, she jumped as someone suddenly hopped into the seat next to her, and she registered that someone had sat beside Jungkook too.
Jungkook rolled his eyes, burying his face in his hands afterwards as Jimin ruffled his hair, making Taehyung, who was beside Yeri, laugh out loud.
"You guys, piss off," Jungkook told them, sighing heavily as he apologized to Yeri, but she only had smiles on her face at their interaction.
"Jungkookie," Taehyung cooed, making Jimin play along by pinching the said boy's cheeks. Jungkook groaned in irritation as he pushed his brother's hand off his face. "What are you guys up to?" Taehyung asked in a knowing voice, almost singing his question as he wriggled his eyebrows suggestively. "Aren't you gonna introduce us?"
Yeri chuckled at Jungkook's annoyed expression as he rubbed his neck. "You guys met yesterday but this is Taehyung," who Jungkook kicked under the table, causing him to yell out in pain, "and you met my older brother, Jimin."
"I've seen you around the sports centre," Yeri said, lightly poking Taehyung. "But I didn't know you guys were brothers!" She said, trying to find the resemblance between the two which caused Jimin to smile.
"It's cause his parents adopted me," Jimin explained, slinging his arm around Jungkook's neck and bringing his hand up to slap his cheek lightly. "But it's like we're blood related to be honest, we can't tell the difference."
"Oh yeah, Tae, this is Suga-hyung's sister," Jungkook said, again kicking him under the table but the statement itself was more of a shock than the contact with Jungkook's shoe.
The footballer's eyes widened, looking once at her then back at the two boys. "Really?!" He inspected her more, causing her to look at the Jeon brothers awkwardly before back at him. "I see it, I see it..." he mumbled, placing his forefinger against his chin. "They have the same... eyes."
"I was adopted too."
"What?!" He stuttered in shock.
"Just kidding," Yeri joked, laughing along with Jungkook and Jimin at Taehyung's gullible reaction.
"How did you guys find out?" He asked, leaning back as he folded his arms across his chest, a little upset that his two close friends decided not to tell him until this moment.
It was within ten more minutes that they explained how they knocked on her door yesterday only to find Yeri and Suga living under the same roof. Jungkook's cheeks almost burned pink at the memory but no one seemed to notice. In that ten minutes, it was also to Jungkook's relief that Jimin and Taehyung had left to go get a snack at a random vending machine and head to their next class.
Jungkook and Yeri decided too that the bill should be paid and that they'd leave but it took another five minutes for the bill to be settled until Jungkook forcibly shoved his card and bill wallet towards the waiter who accepted it with a small chuckle before heading over to the cashier. Jungkook stuck his tongue out at Yeri who huffed in annoyance, blowing her side bangs once as it drooped all over her face as they play fought.
Yeri slung her backpack on one shoulder as she pushed open the door, holding it for Jungkook as he came out and fished his pocket for his phone to check the time. He had another fifteen minutes left till his next lecture.
"That was fun," he commented, grinning as he saw her slightly annoyed facial expression.
"Yeah," she agreed. "Until you stole the bill away from me!" She almost yelled, but obviously didn't since there were a lot of students around, probably on their way to their next destination in campus. "Now I owe you," she mumbled, looking at her shoes bashfully.
"Great, you owe me-" but yet again, Jeon Jungkook had the unbelievable luck of a black cat, because it was in that moment where he was captured in a rough head lock, followed by a rowdy pair of boys nuzzling his head with their knuckles and a few punches given here and there.
Whilst Yeri held a giggle against her hands, Jungkook fought out of their grasp and gave them an annoyed yet exasperated smile as they patted his back.
"Hey, Jungkookie, you on a campus date?" Namjoon said, looking over to Yeri and waving his hand once. "I'm Namjoon, as you know," he coolly introduced. "This is Hoseok," who smiled brightly at her as he slung an arm around Jungkook's neck.
"Yeri, it's nice to meet you guys," she said holding out a hand for the two boys to shake.
After the quick introduction, Jungkook took Hoseok's arm off his shoulder and walked to stand next to Yeri. "Yeah, we're kinda busy, what do you guys want?"
Namjoon and Hoseok laughed loudly at their dongsaeng's hot attitude, shaking their heads as they calmed down. "There's a house party tomorrow night at one of the girls' place in our year. Just wanted to let you know," Namjoon explained, taking out his phone. "I can text you the details if you're interested."
Jungkook's eyebrows furrowed in thought as he pressed his lips together, thinking of both the pros and cons of going to this party. It didn't take him long to realize that there were probably more cons than pros. "I don't know hyung, I don't even know her and I have an early morning the day after," he said, scratching his neck.
"We told Jimin already and he's down," Hoseok mentioned, grinning. "You can even take Yeri along!" He gave her a look which was very sweet, but scary because Yeri would go knowing barely anyone. "Come on man, it'll be fun!"
Yeri frowned. "I hear the parties are like crack lures," she raised her brows, grabbing the wide eyes of Jungkook as he looked at her then back to his hyungs.
"Is that true?!"
Namjoon and Hoseok both scoffed. "There are crackheads but not everyone's on that. It's just some booze and music, and you don't even have to drink if you don't want to. It's a great way to make friends, you know?" Namjoon said, before patting Jungkook's back once and starting to walk in the opposite direction with Hoseok. "We'll catch you later though. Check your phone, I'll send you the details later!" He hollered and then they both walked off.
Shaking his head, he sighed, adjusting the straps of his backpack and facing Yeri. "I'm sorry about them, they'll always find a way to go out at night and have fun."
Yeri only chuckled at his embarrassed face. "It's fine, don't worry about it," and she began to walk slowly away from the restaurant after standing outside for five minutes. "Are you thinking of going?"
Jungkook walked beside her, strolling on the student pathway with his hands tucked in his jeans pockets. Yeri's eyes glanced briefly as he looked up to the sky at the protruding veins in his forearms and her jaw almost dropped. As soon as he looked down she looked away, but she was lucky he didn't notice.
"I really don't know... I'm not too bothered missing out," he checked his phone after he felt a vibration. "Hyung texted me the address, it's not too far from here."
"How about I go with you and if we don't like it, we can go somewhere else?" Yeri proposed, stopping abruptly in front of Jungkook, looking at him with a unique gleam in her eyes. It was only then that Jungkook truly realized there was a sort of feline-shape to her eyes that drew her in. He knew it couldn't have been makeup; she just had swimming and she rushed to get to lunch so there was no way. Jungkook almost gulped when her lips curved a sly smile as she leaned back on her feet. "Not up for it?" She asked, almost turning away but he stopped her just before she could.
"No," he said, finding the right words to say. "It sounds good; I guess..."
But Yeri didn't buy his acceptance, despite how kind her offer was. She frowned and walked up to him again, perhaps even closer than a few seconds ago. "Hey," she almost cooed, grabbing his attention. "It's okay if you don't wanna go," she smiled nudging him a little.
His lips curled up bashful and soon a little dimple showed in his right cheek and she almost swooned at the sight. Jeon Jungkook was so handsome up close.
"It's not that I don't want to go... Okay, well, I don't," he mumbled his words and paused after they both giggled. "But, I just want an excuse to see you again after today," he shyly said, looking up at her once he finished speaking and found her cheeks tinted with a light red.
"Wow... You don't mess around, do you Jeon?" She grinned, folding her arms.
Jungkook threw his head back in laughter as a light smirk hung on his lips. "I'm 9/10 sure you were gonna talk about today with your friends."
Yeri's eyes narrowed. "Touché, you're right," she chuckled but said no more.
"Why don't you pass me your number and then I can text you some time? How's that?" He bravely asked, much to both of their relief of passing the nerve-racking stage of swapping numbers.
Yeri let out a small 'sure' as she grabbed her phone from her back pocket, passing it to him as he passed her his own device. They entered their numbers respectively before handing their own phones to each other, saving the contact before a slight awkwardness filled the atmosphere, causing them to look around nervously. It was to Jungkook's dismay, that Nora, his classmate and Yeri's friend, had passed by and interrupted the silence not realizing.
"Hey guys!" she greeted, wriggling her eyebrows towards Yeri which caused her cheeks to burn of embarrassment. "Class is starting soon, wanna head down together?" She asked Jungkook, who suddenly felt sad to part ways with Yeri.
He couldn't say no however, so he had no choice but to nod his head. "Oh... yeah, sure. I'll see you around Yeri, I had fun today," he kindly said, giving her another one of his killer smiles, almost a smug smirk as he turned on his feet.
A tinge of jealousy hovering over her body; her shoulders slumped slightly to see Nora take her place. "Yeah, see you around. You too Nora," she trailed off and soon the gap between them grew larger and larger and she found herself strolling to her next destination despite the bustle of student rush around her.
