Inspiration on the Franklin Arts Trail
I love nothing more than meeting and talking to other artists, hearing their stories and what inspires them. I certainly got my fill at the recent Franklin Arts Trail. Held on Labour Weekend, (October 26-28th) artists from the top of the Awhitu Peninsula, out to Clevedon and south to Tuakau had their works on display.
Variety
There was such a variety of artistic pieces from mixed media, to landscapes created from felt, to bugs on mugs plus so much more. It was amazing to see so many creative people within the Franklin District.
Favourite Artists
Some of my favourites on the Franklin Arts Trail included: –
Jane Thorne of Little Black Bugs Janes creations revolve around bugs though she also illustrates books she can be found here
Carolyn Burton is a fibre artist and creates works with wool and silk, creating original felted artworks. Pop over to her website and have a look.
Jane Crosbie creates modern impressionist works. Loved the use of colour in her work, so vibrant. Check out her many works on her website
Maria Napier is a landscape painter using acrylics. When I first saw her paintings they looked like photographs they were that good. More about Maria can be found on her Facebook page.

Landscape by Maria Napier
Scott’s Steel Works is a Waiuku business that creates garden art, privacy screens and much more to see what they create pop over to their website
Pollok Gallery on the Awhitu Pennisula is a must stop with lots of work displayed by various artists. All of it is for sale including some of my work. They hold twice yearly exhibitions and are open year round stocking many local artists work. More information can be found on the galleries Facebook page.
Besides viewing a large amount of art the Franklin Arts Trail is a great way to see the Franklin area. From the rugged west coast beaches to the white sandy beaches of the Awhitu Pennisula. To find out more about the Awhitu Penninsula read here or Waiuku read here. To keep up to date with artists and the Franklin Arts Trail pop over to their website. Perhaps you will see yours truly on the next Arts Trail?
P.S if you’re looking for gifts make sure you check out the links and support local.

Pukeko in a Ponga Tree Christmas Card
Pukeko in a Ponga Tree Christmas Card
On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me…. so the traditional Christmas Carol goes.
In New Zealand we have our own version – On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me a Pukeko in a Ponga Tree.
Though my card does not follow traditional lines the insert reads
“I was going to give you a Pukeko in a Ponga tree but I got you this card instead”
I hope the recipient has a sense…

Iron Man 70.3
Last year we headed to the USA so my partner could participate in the Iron Man 70.3 event (read about it here). This year in May we travelled to Busselton, in Western Australia for an event in the same series. We flew Air New Zealand direct from Auckland to Perth. Looking forward to the warmth of Australia we landed in temperatures of 30°C. We then made the 2.5 hour trip to Busselton via Budget hire car. While my partner was training for the event I set about exploring the area.
Things to do in Busselton
Busselton Jetty
The Busselton Jetty The jetty is a major attraction in Bussselton and has been around for 153 years. At 1841m, it’s the second longest jetty in the world and the longest in the Southern Hemisphere. You can walk to the end of the Jetty reading about the history on the way and visiting the underwater observatory at the end. Or if you prefer you can catch the train. Yes there is a train that runs along the Jetty and because we walked last visit we decided to have a trip on the train. To find out more about whats on offer, costs to take the train or visit the observatory and the history of the Jetty visit their website.

History Busselton is rich with history. If you want to discover more I suggest you purchase the Busselton Heritage Trail book from Railway House (Visitor Centre) and have a wander around town. Learn more about the people who settled in the area in 1832 and the history of some of the buildings which still stand today.
Bovells Cottage
Armstrongs Cottage
Post Box Marking Site of Post Office
Explore Busselton
Walking and Cycle Trails I love to explore places by foot so I was happy to discover a number of walking trails which included wetland areas. For people who love to ride a bike there are a number of shared paths in the Busselton area. Bike hire can be found at the Jetty or Fat Duck Cycles who also have a cafe as well. If you visit Fat Duck you must try the Jaffles (a new word I learnt which means toasted sandwich). The Georgraphe Path right on the foreshore of Geographe Bay was a favourite. If feeling energetic you can cycle all the way to Dunsborough.
Art I visited the Courthouse ArtGeo Cultural Complex. The Courthouse houses The Lockup Coffee House and the local art gallery and studio run by the The Busselton Art Society (you can find out more here ). The Margaret River Region had an open studios event while we were in Busselton so I took the opportunity to see some of the local artists work.

Kids At the Busselton Forshore there is a wonderful playground and skate park. Also open green spaces and plenty of beach area to build sandcastles or play in the water.

On your marks
Transition
Of course there is much more to see and do in the area. You can read about my previous visit to the region in this blog. Weather wasn’t as warm as I hoped fortunately I was able to buy a few warmer clothes but I will be better prepared next time. Partner finished his triathlon I got lots of exploring in and so many photos (this is just a very small portion).
Please note I am not paid to link or mention other businesses currently,
