The Light After Darkness

“Of fish, Flies, Dogs and Women”, is a literary piece authored by Timothy R. Montes, a Palanca Awardee and a fictionist writer who grew up in Borongan, Eastern Samar. He studied in Siliman University and later study in University of the Philippines Diliman. He also teaches creative writing in UP Mindanao in Davao City. This story was narrated by Maria Lab-asera through first person point of view . It shows that no matter how hard the burden you’re suffering, life goes on, always keep on going, be smart, have a courage and put hard work in everything that you do, this may lead you to a success you don’t usually expect.  Bering a mother is a never ending role of a woman and being a father is being responsible and a good provider for the family. The story started when Maria Lab-asera telling her miserable life to Mana Biben and how she became successful through selling of fish and how she overcome all the struggles she had experienced. She is upon entering at Atty. Sabate’s gate when the dogs are scrambling over the fish she is selling and she met Angelica Disgrasyada, the daughter of Atty. Sabate and an abandoned wife. Maria started fighting the dogs and that moment she became fearless for the reason that she has to save her basketful of fish for her family.

“You want to know how I turned my life around? You think I became the biggest fish dealer in this town by crying on my sleeves? Look at me — you think it’s all that easy? Here you see me spending my day watching over the fish, raking in money just by swatting away flies while my good-for-nothing husband drowns himself in tuba. You think that is fair? Should I blame the cruel world and jump off a cliff? That statement is what Maria Lab-asera’s telling to Mana Biben. She is a battered wife and her husband is irresponsible so that she pushed herself to sell fish in the street even if she is shy and scared to market competition. But as a mother she sacrifice and feed her family through her own sweat while his husband is just wasting money to tuba and cockfighting. It is true that when you became a mother you can do anything especially for your children. Maria is a fearful wife before but to provide her family she became fearless to everything, she bravely faces all the problems including the gossips who laugh at them. I feel so proud to her, despite of the challenges, she learned from it and she focused on their living.

“I don’t have money”, Angelica Disgrasyada said when Maria asked her to buy fish she is selling. It is sad fact of life that her parents doesn’t accepted what happened to her. She got pregnant during  her college years and never attended school again. Her parents are disappointed to her, they leave their child in the house without money and for me it was very tearful event, that you are already a mother and you don’t have your own money. It is true to life that we women fall in love with wrong men, we fall in love for those who cannot be with us for worst and we fall in love to those cannot take their responsibility to us. 

“Listen,” I told her. “Don’t believe what others may say about you. The people in this town don’t understand what we go through. Those gossips think we have a choice — -But do you understand? There’s nothing to be ashamed of.” Maria said to angelica Disgrasyada. Yes, we should always keep in mind that our life is our life, their life is their life, don’t care about others life we are not living for them, we are living for our love ones. I really believe that we all deserve respect and happiness and for us to achieve that, don’t mind toxic people. 

In conclusion, life is truly just like a wheel, there is a success after all the struggles. Woman should be treated equally no matter who they are, we are deserve to be respected. I really learned lot from this story, I realized how sacrificing being a mother is, no matter how hard the situation is, no matter how stress you are, you have to be the strongest for your family.

Decision is a Choice, Respect is for Everyone

Peter Mayshle is a Filipino-American writer who is popularly known for his literary piece, short stories. He is also known for his works that depicts good morality and lessons. “Touchmove” is one of the greatest short story he had made. I know most us are familiar with the title, it is usually heard when we are paying chess, it is a rule in chess game wherein the player is obligated to move once he touch the chess piece. The story begins when Roman and his brother are playing chess then his Kuya started to distract him by telling him a story about the chick he encountered. It is the first time he had encountered a woman customer in their massage center. They went to the massage room and as what the woman wanted, they are both naked. The woman is squirming as she is being massaged by the man. She feels comfortable but he thought that the woman was crying. He said to turnover and he unexpectedly saw a cigarette markings and a purple bruise on her bust. The woman is pleasing him to do anything, his ugly hands put on her pussy and the other is on her breast with purple bruise, but he did not anything. The man’s story of chick was ended and after that, the woman put on her clothes and left carrying her belongings. Roman stare to his Kuya wondering if he is joking then said, “You’re an idiot”.

“Undress”, she said. In that statement we see that a woman wants to do something with her, she wants more than a massage service. Saying that to a man whom you met for the first time is a shaming part to me, it is an awkward moment. but for others it is just normal. Woman should be respected and for her to gain respect, she has to take care of herself. But when the moment the man said the woman to turn over, he discovered a purple bruise her breast which symbolizes that she is a battered woman. I feel pity for her in that part of the story because i thought that she is looking for love and care.

“Go on, Please”, the woman said. She is pleasing the man to do anything with her, but the man did nothing. I am very proud to the man because he is just going with the flow, and to what the woman wants but he never forget his respect to his customer. He viewed woman as honorable and respectable, he is a gentleman. I really can’t believe that he didn’t take advantage instead he respect.

“You’re an idiot” Roman said. The perception of Roman to women is opposite to his brother. He perceived woman as a sex object and since he is just a kid he didn’t give value, he didn’t realize that woman should be protected and should be respected. 

Queen is the most powerful chess piece, she has the ability to move in any directions and in any squares she wants. it is just an indication that woman should have power and be respected no matter what and who they are. It is also comparable to life, you are just going to decide whether what move are you going to do but once you decided that is all, just like a touchmove rule, once you move, you are obligated to stand for it.

In conclusion, this story is nice, I am very amazed with the way it is written. The twist is very exciting. It is highly recommended to read especially for men for them to inspired in treating and giving respect to every woman. Not only women should be respected but we, we are all deserving to receive respect.

Negative Becomes Positive

“The Use of Force”, is a short story first published in the year 1938 written by an American poet William Carlos Williams, a real-life pediatrician and general practitioner of medicine. Williams not only a doctor but he also a literary poet and writer. This story was narrated through first person point of view wherein the doctor is the narrator. It begins when the doctors visits in the Olson house to checkup their young daughter, Mathilda who has fever for three days. Her parents are concerned and nervous because they are fearful that their child was suffering to diphtheria. The Doctor quickly check the throat of Mathilda but she refuses and just staring to the Doctor. The child's beauty and penetrating stare make an immediate impression on him. He ask Mathilda again to open her mouth but she doesn’t want it and strikes out unexpectedly knocking his glasses and claw the Doctor’s eyes. Concerning that diphtheria is an infected disease and can cause of death the doctor use his force in a benevolent and justifiable purpose to checkup the child and find out that she is suffering to diphtheria. 

One of my reaction to this story is the family status of the Olson family. I really feel pity with them because they are not able to give regular health check up for their sick daughter. Her parent’s are very nervous because they are scared that their child is possibly suffering to diphtheria and aside from that they are afraid with amount of service of the Doctor, they are scared that their money is not enough to pay for it. It is a sad fact of life that if we don’t have lot of money, we’re not able to meet what we need like having a health checkups. We are afraid of everything if we don’t have money. 

Furthermore, the conflict between the child and the doctor. In other’s perception the use force of the Doctor to the young girl was comparable to a raped, but for  me, he did it because he is just thinking about the purpose of his profession, he is responsible to treat and save lives of his patients. Yes, use of force is negative but we can use it in a good motive like what the Doctor did to Mathilda. On the other hand, the conflict between the child’s parent and the Doctor. As the Doctor uses his force to check the throat of their child, Mathilda’s parents are concentrating to the immediate pain it may lead to her without thinking about the consequences the deadly diseases.

Finally, I strongly recommended this story to read especially to parents and children. This will serve as an information about the symptoms of diphtheria and it can lead to death. We can also see her the sacrifices of a Doctor who really wants to save the lives of their patient.
