i gotta say I do think that the day the aliens came is probably one of the truest tmg songs ever. like. it's a song about when you are stuck in a house that is hurting you and you can nearly see the finish line you're so close you just have to make it there and once you do they'll all be sorry. everything else around you will go down in flames if it must and you'll walk out of there you'll finally for the first time be okay be free just as soon as that day gets here. sorry I'm having a lot of memories and thoughts about the way that being a teenager is a unique kind of hell and jd is the only person I'd ever heard actually acknowledge that yeah being a teenager sucks absolute shit. but it also doesn't last forever.

Im back in my mountain goats frenzy and the first time i heard surrounded I was separated from my partner of kick 5 years living in this apartment right off the hip cool street in the shitty part of town and the only grocery store you could buy liquor was 1 block away (which was great i was in the process of killing myself with drugs and alcohol) so id put 20mg of 3-Meo-PCP up my ass and buy a handle and do my thing.

But the apartment was a void. It was devoid of color. The walls were this place between white and beige that wasn’t. The car parts were a gray that wasn’t noticeable. like one walked but your feet didn’t touch anything. And it was specious it had storage, the location was good. on paper it was lovely. Conceptually it was lovely. But inside it was a ravenous gaping maw and it was vacuous and it was so empty. when i mention it now i joke it was an archetypal divorce apartment. it never let you forget you were alone. It was a dream for two, but no one who didn’t have to would move in (except you, getting asked to leave your partners house. So I guess you had to.) one thing I think about is the whole place was carpeted except for the kitchen, which had two square feet of time and 1 square foot of counter space. No one’s cooking for two or three or four here.

So anyway I never let it be quiet. I tried to fill it up. Largely with sound. and Surrounded was my anthem and I love it and those places and times are not forever.
