Wen Xiao/Zhuo Yichen Memories Ep 26/27

The relationship between these two is something I really enjoy. It's not as dramatic or new as other relationships, it's older lived in. Yes, all the gay and the tension and the fate-destined is great, but there's something absolutely warm and healing between these two. However you code them it can't be denied they consider each other very important.

We see two memory sets between ep 26/27 and these both emphasize how they helped each other through their grief. Remember, that Wen Xiao was dropped off at the Demon Hunting bureau sometime after the Blood Moon That Fucked Everyone Up. Same blood moon where Zhuo Yichen's family was killed and Wen Xiao's shifu was killed (both by Zhao Yuanzhou). This event had large consequences. Consider Zhuo Yichen trying to keep his family legacy alive without his family and him being the youngest and only member to survive and Wen Xiao trying to keep the legacy of the Baize goddess alive without her shifu and only having half the token that literally physically strained her body.

These were two very grief stricken and broken people when they met. Wen Xiao's words I imagine were not only for Zhuo Yichen but herself at the time. She gives him flowers that he eventually KEEPS for what 8ish years is the timeline?? Because these flowers represent someone reaching out to him and helping him through his grief. They represent her helping him just as in the second memory she talks of light. In the second memory he's accompanying her with light and warmth and presence. As long as there is a light however weak you can follow it to leave the darkness. The way they intercut the memory and present it's clear she sees him as helping her leave the darkness.

They weren't each other's only healing and nor did they fully "heal" by this point. But they were each other's warmth and presence during these critical moments and time. They helped each other reach till now (and eventually grow further as they both reach out for more connections). They accompanied each other when they were both at some of the lowest points when neither had much to offer the other they were together (and how important that is to feel meaning in this life to feel a connection when everything else seems disconnected! I can't imagine either felt very powerful or important. It's easier to fade away like that or further lose grounding even if one "moves on"). We see how important they made each other and that's worth highlighting.

So I am working my way through a FoF re-watch and boy oh boy are there so many things that have such a different meaning and implication the second time around.

For example, in Episode 5 we are introduced to Li Lun (who is possessing Ran Yi's lover)--but we the audience don't know it's Li Lun. The first words he says to Ran Yi (and in a way Zhao Yuanzhou, who is standing next to him) are:

And then he looks up and right into the camera:

On the rewatch, knowing it's Li Lun saying that (s)he doesn't care what Ran Yi did--what does one's actions matter in the face of the strength of love, loyalty, and desire for continued companionship--it really struck me that this felt like this is Li Lun speaking his truth (from behind a mask) and the words he wished Zhao Yuanzhou had said eight years ago. And yes yes yes we hear from Li Lun that he was angry that ZY mortally wounded him, and because he ended up becoming stronger but we all know the hurt and the pain was really it was all about this: ZY abandoning their friendship and love--and him--in favor of a different set of principles--and not staying by his side.

It's such a small little moment, but adds so much to an understanding of Li Lun's anger, motivation, and character...but which you can't grasp until you know the truth of what is happening on the screen. And as an audience in this show, we also aren't always 'seeing clearly' in the first glimpses until the show changes our perception of a scene later, and I love how that whole theme is played with in so many ways throughout this series.

If you watch closely, it's actually funny how Zhao Yuanzhou and Zhuo Yichen hit all the fundamental milestones of a classic doomed enemies-lovers romance.

Phase one: "OK, he's cute, but I guess a little aggressive flirting wouldn't hurt, and would only fuel his determination to kill me".

Phase two: "Oh no, he's not just cute - he's wonderful and hot and kind and brave and... I'm in trouble. But what's one extra trouble for someone who's doomed to die? We continue to flirt like there's no tomorrow, which is kinda true".

Phase Three: "Oh no, he seems to be starting to feel sympathy and affection for me. Not funny anymore, not funny at all! I have to be cool and distant".

Phase Four: "Neither of us are cool anymore, love is made to torture people, time for a big bad breakdown (with some hallucinations about my ex consuming the love of my life)"

Phase Five: "Oh no, now he looks even more doomed than me. Cool and distant is no longer on the table, I need to burn this place down"

Phase Six: "Ok, I guess we're doomed and in love together now. Things are really bad, but at least we can squeeze in some intimate moments of pleasure (in a pile of spruce branches)"

The whole story started with Zhuo Yichen trying to find ZYZ out to kill him, only for Demon Daddy to willingly serve himself to him on a silver platter and strut into his home, and it ends with ZYC searching for him yet again, but this time to save him and love him and for the final time ZYZ comes to him.
