Here is the trainer after removing it from the silicone. You can see where it has got stuck onto the soft material and I needed to cut all the laces which I then had to remove separately. The trainers I used are a pair of Adidas superstars which I brought second hand in 2013/4. They no longer fit me and we’re too worn to be resold. This was because I wanted to use a pair that would have gone into land fill had I sent them to charity.

Here is the silicone mould after having removed the shoe. You can see the clear air bubbles and it was extremely hard to get everything out. I needed lots of help and strength. I’m really happy I decided to used silicone for my mould as it catches every single detail of the trainer

Another example of different techniques I tried is painting the plaster on to the actual shoe.
This meant I lost almost all the details of the trainer and was left with just the outline. I did like the way this looked and was much easier than creating and demoulding my final trainer however I missed the detail and thought about the environmental impact of haveing to but multiple pairs of trainers

Here is one shoe that broke as I did not have enough plaster to fill the cast up when I made it. The other is a cast of the sole which I intended to put on top of my shoe cast to create a full 360 view of the shoe. However I used the wrong foot and couldn’t line them up correctly. I still like the way they came out and are so delicate

Here are the finished trainers in a line.
I didn’t like this formation as it looks too much like they are in a shop and not discarded like I intended

My final castings of the trainers
As you can see there were some air bubbles in the silicon which ended up leaving extra plaster around the toe and laces area. The softer, more textured material of the shoes ie the laces and the inside were the most difficult to remove from the mild and ended up pulling some of the silicone out with it but I didn’t really mind too much. Another issue I had was with the plaster brand. You can clearly see a difference in colour for the two separate bags of powder used.
Overall I’m really happy with how the trainers came out and look when put on top of each other in a “messy” way

another mayjor inspiration for my fmp was this tracey emin piece on the folkstone sea front. My grandparents live in the town and i would go to see this art every time i visited them. however, i didnt think casting in bronze is what i wanted to do as it did not look industrial and too realistic.

Rachel Whiteread was a very big inspiration for my final major project. I love her use of moulds and how she can create such industrial style artwork from everyday objects. in my final piece, i created a silicone mould from an old shoe i have had for years. I then poured plaster of paris in and repeated until i was happy with the amount.

A fail of a clay cast of a Adidas superstar trainer
The weight of the plaster was too heavy for the wet clay to hold. I still like the cast created

Written statement
I really enjoy visiting galleries such as The Tate St Ives in Cornwall, where I saw my favorite exhibition, Body Parts by Huegette Caland. The artwork led me to experiment with bold colours and shapes. During A Levels we were asked to respond to Jenny Savile’s work which I was happy to do. I love how she presents the female body in a way which may not be perceived as beautiful in today’s standards. This influenced me to create my ‘Self Portrait’ and helped me cement my ideal painting style. On my foundation, I have been inspired by Barbara Walker whose use of line drawing and negative space which led to my ‘fragments of my childhood’ piece. I would love to further explore the etched methods and experiment on a much larger scale in the future. I hear about a lot of artists from word of mouth. My sister got really into Polly Nor a few years ago which led me to take a look at her work and drawing ideas. Lastly, I gain most inspiration from others around me. I enjoy walking around the studio and asking other students about their work to get ideas for my pieces.
