Everyday Cairo Instagram Account Returns to the Streets of the City in Celebration of its First Birthday.
In celebration of the first anniversary of the Everyday Cairo Instagram account, a group of its moderators and co-founders organized an exhibition of select photos featured on the stream over the past year.
Displaying 150 photographs, the event took place at The Shelter Art and Photography Gallery in Zamalek, Cairo from October 15th - 31st, and doubled as a way to introduce visitors to the newly opened gallery, having opened its doors in September. The physical exhibition also meant that for the first time, those who do not have access to Instagram could experience what was previously limited to a digital space.
Initially set up by Belgian photographer, formerly based in Cairo, Mattias Pruyum, Everyday Cairo was established in the same vein as the everydayeverywhere, everydayafrica and other ‘everyday’-style accounts that curated photos of particular cities and regions in an attempt to show images that reflected the diverse realities of these places.

In the case of Egypt, and more specifically the city of Cairo, tired of seeing the standard photographs of tourist attractions such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, the Mosque of Muhammed Ali, and Khan Alkhalili, in a bid to extend the photographic representations of the city, they sought images from amateur and professional photographers alike that showed everything from the people of Cairo from all walks of life, to events, architecture, transportation, residential neighborhoods, special occasions, intimate ins and outs of the city, and overall everyday life of for the people of Cairo. Pretty soon, the #everdaycairo hashtag went viral, grew steadily in popularity and became the go-to account for anyone interested in less commercial views of the Egyptian capital, as well as a place of discovery and re-discovery for those already living in or familiar with the city.

We leave something of ourselves behind, when we leave a place. We stay there, even though we go away and there are things in us that we can find again only by going back there. We travel to ourselves. From the movie A Night Train to Lisbon #latergram #rwanda

Empathy is really the opposite of spiritual meanness. It's the capacity to understand that every war is both won and lost. And that someone else's pain is as meaningful as your own. Barbara Kingsolver #Rwanda #latergram
