Latino small talk really is something else. I was at the barbershop the other day and this lady in her mid-40s kept talking to the other barbers in the shop while she cut my hair. (The following was said in Spanish but I'll translate)
Barber 1: Did you hear about the fish down in [such and such] town in Mexico?
Barber 2: No. What happened?
1: Apparently, the fish tastes strange there.
2: That's crazy! Why?
1: Well, my cousin who lives close to that town tells me that the locals found out the reason for that. You see, they found dead bodies throughout the local lakes and the fish have been eating the remains. So when you eat the fish, it tastes a bit off, or so my cousin tells me.
2: No way! It must be because of the cartels!
1: Yeah, I guess so too. Así son las cosas. (That's just how things are.)
2: Yeah. Anyways, speaking about fish, my family is preparing this dish that my brother likes...
[They proceeded to talk about some delicacy that is unique to the Pacific Coast of Mexico. I forgot the name though.]
I don't know about other ethnicities or cultures but Latinos, such as myself, really do talk about some traumatic shit and then immediately talk about something else. It's super common and it's honestly something I've only noticed recently when one of my white friends pointed that out.
I wonder if anyone else has any dark stories like that pop up randomly in everyday life.
