Smith, Keri. The Wander Society. Particular Books, 2016.
According to “The Wander Society”, Keri Smith states that “wandering is the act of unplanned, aimless walking/ exploring/ ambling with a complete openness to the unknown. Wandering is not about a specific place or destination, getting from one place to another, or movement as a means to an end. Instead, it’s about letting the soul and mind roam.” There are multiple types of wanders that anyone can try. For example, there are slow wanders, color and soundtracking wanders, time log wanders, storytimes, perception wanders, etc. If you were taken on a slow wander adventure, where would you go and what do you think you would discover? During my slow wander, I discovered that there are many things that we miss out on if we are on our phones. For example, I saw new things being built, plants were growing, etc. I typically do not observe those things due to the fact that I’m on my phone either texting someone back or changing a song. There are a few pros to attempting this method such as I felt a sense of relaxation because of the pace I was walking. I was able to see and grasp what was going on around me and also a break from your phone is always beneficial. On the other hand, there are cons as well. For example, It was uncomfortable because I typically walk faster because of my height and length, and also I usually never walk anywhere without my music playing so that was also an unfortunate feeling. All in all, I enjoyed the experience and I hope to complete this again in the future. I have done a color tracking wander and followed the color blue. I chose the color blue because I randomly asked my friend what color I should do for my blog post and she happily screamed out blue. Some things I found around the house were: a sweater, ripped jeans, a blue folder, a water wrapper, a West Georgia book bag, a foam cup wrapper, a popcorn bag, a fly swatter, a dog toy, a patio umbrella, soap, a dish scrubber, a lanyard, and last but not least a durag. I discovered that many objects in my friend’s home that are blue have many different gradients, shapes, and sizes. On the other hand, soundtracking wanders are completely different. I recorded the various sounds I heard during one of my study sessions. There was a typical conversation, paper flipping, clicking, and other general noise. Actually, there were no sounds that I was surprised to hear. One thing about me is that I have a short temper so the clicking and tapping of my friend’s pen was VERY annoying. All in all, I believe this wander’s purpose was to take a minute to hear general sounds around while doing whatever you were doing. A sense of mindfulness comes into play as well because you must be mindful of other people and if they want noise or not. Wanders are beneficial for daily exercise and sightseeing. During my time log wander, I traveled from the Campus Center to Starbucks and then finally ended in the Oaks. This wander was at nighttime so I noticed that the Campus Center was hosting intramural basketball, Starbucks had a very long line, and the Oaks was normal. Also raccoons and opossums were seen outside the garbage can beside the Callaway building. This experience is no different from actually focusing on getting to my location instead of completing a wandering exercise. Wanders also make for some interesting adventures and stories. Once on a cold winter night, it was late and I had to walk back to my room from Center Pointe Suites. There are 2 ways to get from CP to the Oaks. One route that one could go to is near the Campus Center, which I consider as a long way, or, near the UCC, which I consider as the short way. I chose the short way so that I could get to my room faster and get out of the cold. As I was walking, I noticed multiple squirrels fighting each other in the bushes next to the UCC. I did not want them to turn their attention to me so I proceeded to walk faster, but the wind got stronger. Continuing my journey through the cold, I saw people walking their dog and going for a late-night run. On the other route, I do not see people because that pathway has numerous hills, turns, and staircases. Along with myself, I do not think someone wants to have a mini workout walking back to their room. Now I am almost to my room and I saw the garbage truck emptying the dumpster outside the Oaks. I had my headphones in the noise was mostly canceled out. I proceeded to enter the Oaks, swipe in, and enter my room. This wander showed me that are many pathways to the same location, it is just a matter of how fast you want to get there. I think people should try my wander because you will notice different things and get to use your common sense to either choose the faster way or be adventurous and choose the more scenic way. In my wander, I chose the quicker way so I could to my room faster since I was in the cold. Quite frankly, I choose the faster way all the time regardless of the weather. You will still notice different human and animal interactions while wandering but trying this wander and using your common sense for your choice of the pathway you would like to walk is beneficial. Additionally, wanders can affect our everyday lives because emotions are involved. Once on a windy day, it was early and I was walking to East Commons to grab some food. The wind was extremely strong making the trees rumble. As I was making my way, I noticed multiple people being affected by these strong gusts. For example, students were losing their balance and their hair was flowing away from their faces. Not only was their hair flowing, but also people’s faces lit up as their cheeks became blush red. Wind has an immense effect on people and nature every single day whether it is a slight cool breeze or treacherous wind gusts. Another time I experienced this was early in the afternoon one day and I was going to the pool to meet up with some friends. The sun was blazing down making me squint to see. As I was making my way, I noticed multiple flowers and bushes being affected by this beam of light. For example, the crops were looking very dry and my friends and were always parched. Not only were we parched but we all got suntans while either swimming or laying out on a pool chair. Sunlight has a vast effect on people and nature every single day whether it is a nice warmth feel or a slightly dangerous heatwave. This wander showed me that are many ways wind and sunlight affect our everyday lives. I think people should try this wander because you will notice different things sunlight and wind can affect and also your emotions are compromised because of the heat the sun causes and how strong wind can be. During this journey, I chose the day that the sunshine was light and the wind was gusting so I could experience how nature is affected by dealing with both forms of weather simultaneously. You will still notice different human and nature interactions while wandering but trying this wander and feeling different emotions is beneficial. Finally, there are wanders where you can track one thing or multiple things at once. The item I chose to track are the trees/ branches all around campus. As I walk around campus, I see trees everywhere since we have nature spread across campus. Currently we are in the season of winter and the trees are very bare and fragile. Branches are broken upon the ground and trees are a very pale brown color. This wander corresponds with a slow wander because I am basically doing what slow wander illustrates but the only difference is that I have my headphones in while I wander. I have also tracked three items while wandering and my three items were an indoor NBA regulation basketball, a fruit punch Powerade, and a black hand towel. These items are connected because this is what I bring to the gym when I go play basketball. Even though I have lost passion for basketball, I still play in my driveway all the time for fun. You can not hoop without a basketball and you can not stay hydrated with fluids. Fruit punch Powerade is my favorite sports drink along with Bodyarmor so that is the reason I chose that fluid. After all the hard work you put in, a towel will erase all the sweat on your face and neck so you can get back out there and keep grinding. These items connect because these are my essentials when I play basketball. In conclusion, no matter what wander you choose, wandering is highly beneficial to the body and mind. There are multiple wanders to choose from so its endless opportunities and stories that can be created. I hope you are inspired by my wander adventures and hope you try them for yourself.

Prompt 8: One Thing
The item I chose to track are the trees and branches all around campus. As I walk around campus, I see trees everywhere since we have nature spread across campus. Currently we are in the season of winter and the trees are very bare and fragile. Branches are broken up on the ground and trees are a very pale brown color.
This wander corresponds with blog prompt one because I am basically doing what blog one requires but the only difference is that I have my headphones in while I wander.

Prompt 7: Perception Hacking
On a bright summer day, it was early in the afternoon and I was going to pool to meet up with some friends. The sun was blazing down making me squint to see. As I was making my way, I noticed multiple flowers and bushes being affected by this beam of light. For example, the crops were looking very dry and my friends and were always parched. Not only were we parched but we all got suntans while either swimming or laying out on a pool chair. Sunlight has a vast effect on people and nature every single day whether it is a nice warmth feel or a slightly dangerous heat wave.
This wander showed me that are many ways sunlight effects our everyday lives. I think people should try my wander because you will notice different things sunlight can effect and also your emotions are compromised because of the heat the sun causes. During this journey, I chose the day that the sunshine was light so I could experience how nature is effected with only a sustainable amount of heat. You will still notice different human and nature interaction while wandering but trying this wander and feeling different emotions is beneficial.
