I seriously think people need to understand the difference between Will being possessed and Will having True Sight.
In s2, Will's ability to see into the Upside Down is described as True Sight before he gets possessed by the Mind Flayer.
This conversation happens right before Dart escapes, before Will gets possessed on the field.
Part of this True Sight ends up being Will's ability to sense the Mind Flayer — again, something he is able to do before getting possessed on the field,
as well as something he is able to do when he is not possessed.
This is especially notable because he is the only person who has been possessed who had True Sight before ever being possessed, and is also seemingly the only person to experience it at all. Even when Billy is possessed, what seems to be a True Sight experience is actually more aligned to a Vecna Vision than Billy actually being able to see into the Upside Down, or perhaps a mixture of both.
Notably, during this scene (cold open of 3x02), we hear a clock chiming, lending more credence toward this being a Vecna Vision.
Even if this is a mixture of a Vecna Vision and True Sight, it still means that Billy was unable to experience True Sight until after he was possessed, unlike Will.
"Maybe Will has been possessed this entire time, ever since he was rescued from the Upside Down!" Incredibly unlikely, especially considering he had the Mind Flayer literally burned out of him in season 2. Also, why would they show us the whole ordeal of him getting possessed in s2 if he had actually secretly been possessed the entire time?
"Maybe Will was actually experiencing a Vecna Vision instead of True Sight in season 2!" This defies the physical logic established in the show. In order for the Mind Flayer to possess someone, we see that its particles need to physically enter the person. That is why even when the gate is opened in season 3, Billy still has to physically bring people to the Flayed Spider to get possessed.
This means that when Will experiences True Sight, he is phasing between both the Rightside Up and the Upside Down at the same time.
They even specifically have Dustin and Mike talk about True Sight and whether the Mind Flayer can hurt Will when he's in True Sight, and Mike shows doubt as to whether they can apply D&D logic to this.
And Mike's right to doubt, because this convo happens after we witness the Mind Flayer possess Will. We know that Dustin is wrong, and that the shadow can hurt Will. When Will is in True Sight, a being that is in the Upside Down can interact with Will, and likely vice versa.
Another point toward Will's True Sight not being a Vecna Vision is that on Halloween, when Will experiences True Sight, he hears the baby demoslugs, which helps them determine that Dart is from the Upside Down. Why would Vecna show him that? It's not necessary.
My last piece of evidence against it being a Vecna Vision is that when a person experiences a Vecna Vision, they're frozen in place, even when they move in their visions.
However, when Will experiences True Sight, when he moves in the Upside Down, he moves in the Rightside Up.
It's more likely that Will's extended time in the Upside Down, along with him dying in the Upside Down, either awakened latent abilities or germinated within him a psychic connection to the Upside Down that he is able to access without being possessed.
Fundamentally, what this means that for s5 is:
Will does not have to be possessed in order for him to have True Sight.
And since when Will is experiencing True Sight, he is seeing into the Upside Down,
Will can still be a Super Spy in season 5 by using his True Sight to see into the Upside Down, even if he isn't seeing via the Hive Mind.

Random thought but imagine they found Will’s fake body in the beginning of season 1 episode 1 instead of Joyce realising he was missing.
Like having the Laura Palmer version of haunting the narrative and Joyce spends the season trying to convince people that her son is alive instead of missing.
