Final Destination
Is there anything scarier than knowing you're are going to die soon? Final Destination came out in 2000, and is directed by James Wong, but doesn't have any notable actors.
The film is about Alex Browning, who is about to go on a school trip to Paris, when he has a premonition that the plane is going to explode after takeoff. After having a freakout onboard, he, five other classmates, and one teacher, are forced off the plane, only to watch it explode moments later. While trying to return to normal life, one of the students, who left the plane with Alex, mysteriously dies, which causes Alex to learn the rest of them have cheated death, and must cheat it again to survive.
Tension is really well done in this movie, and while some parts are predictable, it still is an enjoyable watch. The movie did not gain much critical success upon release, but it has garnered a cult following, and is referenced often in pop culture. I would recommend watching it, if you like horror movies.

Big
Doesn't every young child wish they were grown up? That is exactly what this movie is about. It is directed by Penny Marshall, and stars Tom Hanks, alongside Elizabeth Perkins and Robert Loggia. and there is also an amazing performance by Jared Rushton, who was around 13 years old during the movie.
Tom Hanks character, Josh Baskin, is disheartened because he was not allowed to ride a carnival ride on account of him being too short. He then stumbles upon a Zoltar machine, and makes a wish that he was big. To his surprise, he wakes up as a grown man in the morning. The movie continues from there as he tries to locate another Zoltar machine to reverse his wish.
I thought the movie was pretty funny, and the story was engaging. The great part of this movie, however, is Tom Hanks' acting. His performance as a 12 year old in a middle-aged man's body is very believable, and is why I recommend the movie.

Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump is an exceptional movie, that is more about America, than the character the movie is named after. It stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, and Gary Sinise, and the movie is directed by Robert Zemeckis.
The film covers the life of Forrest Gump, played by Tom Hanks, who is dim-witted, but achieves great things throughout his life. He starts his life in braces to help with his posture, but after those fall off, he finds that he can run like the wind, and earns himself a football scholarship to Alabama. After that, he ends up becoming involved with nearly every major event in American history throughout his lifetime, from winning a medal of honor during the Vietnam war, to becoming involved with the watergate scandal.
It's hard to decide what I would call this movie. It is definitely comedic, but also has plenty of dramatic parts. Either way though, it is well worth watching. Forrest Gump has so many great and iconic moments throughout, that I would say it's a movie you have to watch at some point.

Good Will Hunting
Everyone wishes they were a genius, and sometimes genius' wish that they weren't special. This movie is about the latter. It stars Matt Damon, Robin Williams, Minnie Driver, and Ben Affleck, and it is directed by Gus Van Sant.
Will Hunting, played by Matt Damon, is that genius. He has a photographic memory and can solve complex math equations intuitively. Though, rather than putting his mind to use, he chooses to be a janitor at MIT and hang out in his neighborhood with his buddies from high school. While working one day, he solves a math problem outside of a classroom and is noticed by the professor, who decides to take him under his wing. However, Will Hunting gets in trouble with the law, and the professor works out a deal with the judge to let him out, under the condition that he goes to therapy with Sean Maguire, who is played by Robin Williams.
The story that follow is one that will keep your eyes glued to the screen. It's interesting to see a character that has so much potential, but doesn't want to use it, and it shows how important it is to have people around you for support. I definitely recommend this movie.

Goodfellas
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Its got everything, a star-studded cast, an amazing director, humor, and suspense. It is directed by Martin Scorsese, and stars Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta.
Ray Liotta has the lead, and plays Henry Hill, a young kid that got swept up into the mafia life, because he grew up admiring the guys who hung around his block, drove hot rod's, got girls, and never had any trouble with the police. Him and Joe Pesci's character, Tommy DeVito, get taken under the wing of James Conway, Robert De Niro, and the movie follows them over the years as they live out the mafia life.
This movie does an amazing job of putting you in the shoes of Henry Hill. You get to feel what he feels during the highs, when he gets to cut lines and has the front seats at shows, and the lows, while the walls are closing in on him and he becomes paranoid. If you haven't seen it yet definitely put it on your list.

Galaxy Quest
Galaxy quest is a fun filled satire about the TV Sci-Fi genre. It shows a group of washed up actors, who starred in a hit show, that is reminiscent of Star Trek, who now make their living through re-runs and signing autographs at conventions. Tim Allen plays the egotistical lead in the show, Commander Jason Nesmith, and Alan Rickman plays the depressed Alexander Dane.
The group of actors from the TV show are visited from real life aliens, who modeled their entire world from watching tapes of the TV show on earth. They then ask the actors to join them and command their ship to help defend and defeat their enemy.
The movie does a really good job of taking the cliches from these types of shows and movies and making jokes of them. The jokes are funny, clever, and well placed throughout the film. It's a movie i would definitely recommend if you are familiar with TV Sci-Fi, but anyone would find it enjoyable.

Prisoners
Everyone loves a good, suspense filled, thriller every now and again, and thats what I thought I would get when I decided to watch "Prisoners". However, this movie has a lot more than that. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman, and is Directed by Denis Villeneuve.
The movie is about a semi-normal family, Hugh Jackman's, whose daughter gets kidnapped, and the subsequent investigation, that's led by Jake Gyllenhaal. But, thats where the normal thriller movie ends, and instead we get a movie about human nature, and a reminder of why we have the legal processes.
This movie is a movie I would recommend, but wait to watch it when you are looking for something more serious. It's a good story with sympathetic characters, that makes you wonder how you would act in a similar situation.

The Burbs
This is an interesting movie. I had never heard about it, and only found it because I was scrolling through Netflix looking for something to watch. It stars Tom Hanks and also Carrie Fisher, which I didn't realize until after the movie, when I was looking at the reviews online.
The movie is about a character played by Tom Hanks, Ray Peterson, who is taking a week off of work, and wants to spend his vacation lounging around at home and palling around with his neighbors. Though, his week gets interrupted, as him and his neighbors begin to grow suspicious, and start spying on their mysterious and creepy new neighbors, who just recently moved in.
I thought this was a pretty enjoyable movie, although it's not an Oscar worthy movie and didn't have much critical success. I think for people who grew up in the suburbs, it can be pretty funny and relatable.

21 Jump Street
This movie is a remake of a popular television show that ran through the late 80's and early 90's. Like in the TV show, the movie shows two rookie cops, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, going back to high school to infiltrate a drug ring.
This movie has tons of laugh out loud moments. It's full of subversive humor and has some really smart jokes. Also, It has a nice throwback moment to the original "21 Jump Street", that fans of the show would definitely love. It has a star studded cast with Ice Cube, Dave Franco, Brie Larson, Rob Riggle, Ellie Kemper, Jake Johnson, and Nick Offerman.
I am sure most of you have seen this movie, given that it is one of the greatest comedies to come out since the 2010's. But on the off chance that you haven't seen it, I would tell you to give it a shot.

The King of Comedy
I have heard about "The King of Comedy" ever since "The Joker" came out, and this is because a lot people say "the Joker" was the same story, but with superheroes. I've always wanted to check it out because of this, and after watching, I have to say I agree, and it's definitely just as good.
This movie is directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Robert De Niro. It's about a failed comedian, who lives in his mom's basement. He happens to get the chance to talk to a famous talk show host (sound familiar), and tries to get a big break through him.
I would call it a dark comedy, and it has some real funny moments and situations. I would honestly say it's the comedic version of Taxi Driver. So if you liked Taxi Driver, and are looking for a laugh, I would say give it a shot.

Dazed and Confused
Alright, alright, alright. The first movie I want to discuss is the Iconic 90s movie "Dazed and Confused". Surprisingly, this was actually the first time I watched this movie, and I thought it was great.
This movie to me is almost like a slice of life. There is no real plot, as it just follows various characters, and their adventures, on the last day and night of school before summer starts.
It's also cool to see Matthew McConaughey in a role like this, rather than as a leading man in a blockbuster movie.
If you are looking for a movie to throw on in the background, while hanging out with your friends, or if you are looking to feel nostalgic about your high school days, this would be a great choice.
