Ethos. Pathos, Logos FTW!

 “How will I execute Ethos, Pathos, and Logos as a producer, creator, writer, and activist?”   

We must know what Ethos, Pathos, and Logos mean. So I decided to add the definitions to remind myself throughout this post ( and help others, hopefully.)

SECTION A: As a writer!

 1. How will you employ

Ethos?

           My homepage will carry the credibility that I am the author for the website. It will be credible because I am a student enrolled in the university of Texas at el Paso taking RWS 1302 class and I can share the experience of taking the class with professor Audrey. I will express situations and feelings I went through first had.

Pathos?

          The section that includes Assignment Reflections will carry plenty of logos. This is the section that I will express my achievements, my difficult times and my reliefs throughout the semester when working on all the assignments. I will also be sharing my experiences and thoughts on some of the readings from the required textbooks from this course when I get to the Course Reading Reflection.

Logos?

           I will cover logic with the fair use statement, informational graphics and facts. My writing fluency must stay at the same pace and rhythm. It must be well written. Including examples, pictures, facts and an in depth description when needed. Logos will be available in practically everything. For example, my homepage, the tabs I include and the text in these sections.

SECTION B: As a designer!

As a designer overall I should be able to express myself and engage my viewers visually and artistically. I should be able to capture their full attention without overwhelming them at all.

 2. How will you employ

Ethos?

           I will portray credibility through alignment and grouping. The Website must inform my peers in a professional manner. I believe that using vertical and horizontal elements can sustain a professional look if used adequately. Not too much, just enough. I would like to separate work, for example having a section dedicated to just the assignment reflections. This will cover a grouping aspect in my webpage. For example, diving sections and using correct grammar. Making sure the webpage looks up to date and all my sources are correct as well as the information I use in the sections of my webpage.

Pathos?

I will portray emotions through consistency, Contrast, and balance. My Headings will carry a bigger font size, and the same style of text and my body text will carry a smaller font size but perhaps the same text style. An ongoing feeling throughout the webpage. I would like to keep the same feeling well balanced and equally weighed. If an image expresses a strong feeling and my text from the opposite side lacks emotion that it can definitely throw off my balance, however images and graphics will weigh more than text so I must be precise with this issue. The background color will be a light gray, were I can still add images and text without overwhelming anybody and for the website to remain professional.

Logos?

Like mentioned above the organization of the home page and other sections are very important and they resemble Logos. Being able to navigate the webpage without difficulty is a must for my web page as well as the webpage itself making sense to my peers and I. Perhaps when I explain my work or reflect on my readings I can include quotes, by doing that my viewers will have an easier understanding to what I mean. I will make sure to portray a message and make it well known, my viewer must not go in my webpage looking for stuff, the stuff should be available in an instant. #ChallengeAccepted

Ethos:

Homepage/ About me: In this section, I will be sure to employ the use of ethos by keeping it true to myself and who I am as a person. I will make sure everything is neat, correct, in terms of grammar and things of that nature, as well as keeping it light hearted but professional at the same time.

Assignment Reflections: When doing the assignment reflections, I plan to maintain ethos throughout it by reviewing the assignments that I have completed and basing my reflections solely off of the new and fresh ideas of the assignments in my head so that no information is missing.

Reading Reflections: When completing the reflections on my readings, I plan to use ethos by re-referencing the ebook as well as the WIT book in order to properly reflect and remember the readings that have been assigned throughout the semester.

Pathos:

Homepage/ About me: In this section, I plan on employing the use of pathos through how I set my website up in terms of fonts, colors, sections, and images. I will make everything clear and concise while keeping it lighthearted in nature.

Assignment Reflections: With this section, I will reflect on everything that I have done that has brought me to where I am in the semester and also as to how much hard work and time each of the assignments really took.

Reading Reflections: For this section, I will employ the use of pathos through discussing some of the readings and as to how they assisted in my completement of the assignments as well as how they helped me throughout the class in general.

Logos:

Homepage/ About me: In this section I will utilize logos by maintaining a specific layout throughout my whole website as well as making sure that all of the information on it is up to date and accurate for the reader to soak in. I will also compare the websites that have been provided for us in order to make sure that I am on the right track to creating a great website.

Assignment Reflections: In this section, logos can be applied through using examples. The examples or evidence can come from the tumblr pdf files as well as other assignment files that had been posted in order to ensure that everything is correct.

Reading Reflections: Similarly to assignment reflections, I will be referencing the ebook as well as the hard copy book in order to ensure that all of the information and examples I have for the readings are accurate and helpful.

Section B: 

Ethos: As a designer, I will employ ethos through the use of correct information and trustworthy sources. Also, as always, correct grammar and punctuation are a must so those will be employed as well to ensure that my website design will follow the rules of ethos.

Pathos: As a designer, pathos will come in handy because I can showcase it through the layout of my website, the colors of the website, and the total content of the website. I plan on keeping the design of my website mostly monochromatic and simple so I think that in the context of pathos, my website will be successful.

Logos: As a designer, I will employ the use of logos by maintaining a neat and simple layout that is easy to navigate. I will only be using things that are correct and helpful and I will also make sure to give credit to my sources.

Thinking About My Website

The website being the last assignment of the semester has me like……

Section A:

In my website I must remember to use the five principles of design which are

1) Contrast: Design such as font style and size are different from one another.

2) Consistency: Making sure design is consistent and similar.

3) Balance: When images and text have equal weight, such as spreading out the content.

4) Grouping: Keeping sets of like items on the same page and not scattered.

5) Alignment: Lining up elements on the page either vertically of horizontally

Questions for analysis:

1. Identify and describe the balance of the site. 

The website is terribly balanced because the text is not very clear to read and it does not match the background.  The colors used in this website are very distracting because they are too many colors around the text.

2. How is contrast employed on the site?

The contrast on the site is not very good because the text is all over the place and the color scheme does not match the price components being discussed. The font size is not just one size it many different sizes for every section. 

3. Evaluate the site’s use of consistency.

The use of consistency is not consistent because they use different colors and font sizes.

4. Describe the site’s utilization of alignment and grouping.

Alignment of this site is not good because the text is spread out all over the website and the text is not aligned. The text is different sizes and colors making it hard to be aligned together. And for the grouping, they placed the text and graph right next to each other which makes it hard to look at one thing at once.

5. Based on your analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, describe the effectiveness of the site. 

Based on my analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, the effectiveness of the site is weak. It showed me what I shouldn’t do on my website. It showed me that being very flashy is not a good way to make a website.

The balance of this site is very good because the text and the colors correlate very well. The photos also correlate with everything else on the website.

2. How is contrast employed on the site?

The contrast of this website is very organized. The size and style of the text was all the same. He used a color scheme that contrasted very well with the text. Having a black background did not take away from the text which was a good format.

3. Evaluate the site’s use of consistency.

The consistency of this site is was very good because everything about the design was consistent and only used a few colors to keep the website very simple.

4. Describe the site’s utilization of alignment and grouping.

The alignment and grouping of this website was great because everything was very well organized and aligned perfectly.

Based on my analysis of the site in terms of the principles of design, the effectiveness of this site is excellent. It showed me how I should do my website, very simple and organized. The website showed me what my website could be very simple but still look professional.

1. What will you have to do to ensure that your website is balanced?

To make sure that my website is balanced and that my text and images balance each other out. That both need to have an equal amount of space.

2. How will you use contrast on your website?

On my website I will make sure that I use contrast when picking out the colors for the background and text so that they stay the same to make my website look organized and simple.

3. Where will you employ consistency on your website?

I will employ consistency on my website by maintaining my design of it consistent and having everything be the same format.

4. How can you use alignment and grouping to make your website more effective?

I can use alignment and grouping to make my website look organized. By having the text and pictures aligned and grouped appropriately it will make my website look more organized and not seem all over the place.

5. What colors will you use for your website? Why?

The colors I will use for my website will be something that has a soft tone to it and that is not very flashy and bright. I might go with a beige color or a soft grey but I have not decided yet.

6. How else can you ensure that your website is well-designed?

I will ensure that my website is going to be well-designed because I am going to follow the website guidelines and ask my professor questions on anything I may need help with. I will also make sure to use my analysis of these two websites as references.

In order to begin this assignment, I needed to have an understanding of the five basic principles of design. After reading those from the TumblrTuesday14 pdf file, I was ready to begin investigating the provided websites.

From here, I went on to think about my own website and in order to do that, I thought about the websites I had just reviewed as well as referring to the rws ebook. After this, I went on to answer the questions from the tumblr tuesday pdf.

I really like the advice you included that you got from the scholar you interviewed! I think that because you realize that no matter how badly you really want something, obstacles will always be there, but that you can also still overcome those obstacles. I think you will do great in your field knowing all that you do now and because you are determined and motivated! Good job and good luck!

Reflecting on our research skills

1. WHAT: I have learned so much throughout the course of researching on my semester topic, Gender Diversity in the medical field. I have learned that many workplaces such as health care settings have gender bias and not everyone receives equal opportunities. Creating the literature review was stressful but in the end, it came out well. Thanks to Dr. Diaz Martinez for allowing me to interview her and use her information in my review.

SO WHAT: What I have learned so far is important for this course because it gives me many different perspectives about what can be expected from the medical field and other workplaces. It is also important because it helps me, as a future grad and as a future professional to never give up on the career I want to pursue no matter how many obstacles I face.I also learned some communication skills conducting the interview and that can benefit me for this course. Interviewing Dr. Martinez made me realize that if you really want something to be possible, you have to be prepared for all the obstacles that you will face and that nothing comes easy.

NOW WHAT: Now that I have some knowledge about gender diversity in the medical field, I can make a change in the community by raising awareness regarding gender diversity in health care settings. With this knowledge, I will also be more aware about my surroundings and study hard to get me through these years in the university. I will now know what to expect once I enter the medical field and will be prepared for whatever comes.

This post is so helpful and I will definitely be referring back to it when it comes to finalizing these sections of my literature review! I think you did a really great job on explaining each of the sections and what is needed for them as well as providing great examples that will definitely come in handy. Good job and thank you! I no longer have to look this confused!

Piecing together the Literature Review

This week’s post is to help everyone get a better understanding of how the literature review paper is supposed to look or be drafted. Our instructor separated us into groups and I was assigned Table 4/Group 4: Graphic image and conclusion. At first I was panicking at starting this post especially because I missed class Friday for a family emergency I feel like I am diving in blindly for this week’s assignment.

I begin by reading the tum Tuesday rubric for week 10, after reading the instructions I then began to summarize what key aspects are required for the graphic image and conclusion portion of the literature review.

The next step states for us to discuss where students can find detailed information regarding these two sections (graphic image and conclusion) of the literature review. One should refer to the rhetoric E Book, this is a screen shot of pg. 230.

The last part of this blog is to discuss several recommendations for how students can meet the requirements for the graphic image and conclusion section of the literature review paper. First i would recommend this you tube video that explains how to create your own graphs to show or compare data in your lit review paper. 

The next recommendation i can provide for the conclusion and graphic image portion is a video on how to create charts using word to compare data found related to your topic. By using charts and graphs, one can not only provide proof for the statements written throughout the literature review, but can help show the credibility of the information you choose to use in this paper. 

Now that i have completed all 3 sections of this weeks tumblr Tuesday post i cant help but feel a bit more at ease about the literature review final paper. Not only does my post help clarify what is required in the graphic/ conclusion section but reading my classmates post regarding the other sections of the lit review, there is no doubt that i wont get a high A for the final draft of my lit review paper.

#Introduction&InTextCitations

Hopefully my post can help some of you guys out in polishing your literature review!

The requirements for the introduction can be found in the RWS Ebook on page 226 or in the Literature Review Supplemental Guideline that Professor Cisneros has provided for us under week 9! 

There is no page or section dedicated to in text citations in the book so I thought that this short video would be of some help!

In order to completely fulfill these requirements, myself and my classmates should be sure to look through not only each of these posts but the Supplemental Guidelines and the ebook as well!

My Interview Checklist: Week 9

first i picked the scholar of my choice and sent the email that had the information to be interviewed.

Next i downloaded the interview release form and saved it to drop box.

Then i searched for my interview questions in drop box

 After that i saved the interview confirmation into drop box. 

And i will be recording the interviewee and if not recording then writing down the interview.

#PreparingForMyInterview

In order to prepare for an interview, the first step that I needed to take was to send my number one chosen scholar an email to request an interview so I went on to do so. 

After completing this step, my next step was to download and save the interview release form so on I went and I saved it to dropbox as well. 

From here I went ahead and condensed my research questions and interview questions onto a word document that would be suitable to send my chosen scholar. 

The next step in my interview checklist said to read and download the Interview Confirmation and to upload it to my dropbox as well. 

After this, my next step would be to document my recording materials. 

Thankfully my scholar replied the same day so we were able to agree on a form of the interview. Unfortunately, she is out of town until after this assignment is due so we settled on an interview via email, therefore I will only need my laptop to document this interview. 

My nerves have been settled now that I have had contact with my scholar!

After I finished my interview questions I realized that I need to do a little more research on my topic. So the questions and the research itself would make more sense and the scholars that I chose to interview could give me appropriate answers that eventually will be part of my paper, so my research in diversity of women in engineering will be complete, and done thoughtfully giving valuable information.

I did my research and it turns out that mostly all majors (including social work) under the College of Health Science is advised through the Utep support center according to the students accumulative GPA. However, I have my advisor, Joy Olimpio who helps me every semester and I am confident that he will guide me in the right direction if I have any questions.

My chosen scholars:

I chose Assistant professor Eva Moya because her practice includes research in the border. She is also a bi-national social worker and is bilingual. Her knowledge and experiences may help my research since I am focusing on the diversity of social workers.

I chose Dr. Yok Fong Paat an assistant professor because she researches migration and speaks Chinese,malay and English. She can share her knowledge and experiences and I can get a better idea with how her migrant clients adapt in the united states.

I chose Assistant professor Griselda Villalobos because she focuses on gerontology and one of my main peer reviewed articles focuses on older people. She is also bilingual and may have a different experience than assistant professor Moya.

Starting off with section 1:

My major is Psychology and that would belong to the College of Liberal Arts and it would also fall under the Department of Psychology. When it comes to advising, the Academic Advising Center is the place to go. In the below picture are the college and the contact information.

When it came time to find the three scholars that research and study what interests myself in the field of psychology, I had a hard time navigating the website at first. 

However, after a bit of clicking around, I was able to pinpoint where to find the psychology faculty! 

From there, I went through each of the listed names and read each of the professor’s biographies in order to get a sense of if they were or were not the right fit for me and this assignment.

Starting off with the first professor I found: 

My reason for choosing Professor Lloyd was fueled by a couple of reasons. For one, his interest of research pertains to the legal aspect of psychology, which is what I happen to be interested in. Also, I had him as my professor for my Introduction to Psychology class my first semester of college and I thoroughly enjoyed his class because of his knowledge and because he tied in bits and pieces of his work, making it that much more interesting to learn about. I just had to include him as one of my top three scholars!

The second scholar I happened to stumble upon is Dr.Louden.

My reason for choosing Dr. Louden is once again because she has an interest in the legal side of psychology and her research shows that. More in depth, her interest is in criminal justice and mental health or offenders with mental disorders which is another area I am quite interested in. I think she was a great match for me just based off of these terms. 

So far the search seemed to be going really well and I was on my way to finding my third and final scholar.

Last, but certainly not least, is Dr.Wood. My reason for choosing Professor Wood falls under the category as the previous two professors; forensics. However, his field of work is just a tad different in the fact that he deals with forensics in relation children. This isn’t exactly what I thought I would be interested in but I did think that his work could give me some insight on some insight on another field I could find interest in. 

Overall, this process was easier and not as stressful to me as I thought it may be and I learned quite a bit in the process!

Overall, I feel like your questions do a great job of reflecting the category you are covering and they are not biased or double barreled! I think your top four questions include: question 2, question 3, question 5, and question 6 because they do a great job at identifying the topic being discussed, they show the impact of your topic, and they show how your topic is being used! Great job!

Molding Researchable Research                        Questions

I began my research questions eagerly.

After finishing my questions, I proceeded to the writing center.

I revised my questions to fix grammar errors, biases and elaborated more on several questions. 

The feedback I received at the writing center was extremely useful and insightful. My tutor gain me a different perspective on my topic and was able to tell me if my questions were biased or not. She stated the repetition in my question and answers. Other than restating the question, I needed to elaborate more and describe in detail what I wanted to gain from each question. Overall it was a great experience and I truly think the writing center helps students improve on their writing and help them receive a higher score.
