Beauty and the Banal task
pology “”Within your blog/workbook research the New Topographic movement and its lasting influence on contemporary photographers. There will be tasks and support for this research through the Contextual Studies class.”“
Beauty can be found in the most unusual and unexpected places. we pass things every day that in the right angle, light and position can be made to look pleasing and “beautiful”.
Traditional beauty in photography comes from vast and elaborate landscape images, mountains in the background and beautiful lakes in the foreground. Or can be showed through models and eye catching clothes/props. However the word beauty can be created through photography in very diffrent and simple ways, using matching or contrasting colours or subjects, beauty can be found everywhere. A phone box which could come across as dull and not exiting to photograph could be made to into a eye pleasing image if a person in red walked by with a contrasting background, this could be called “beautiful”.
Traditional beautiful landscapes apear to be so distant and so far from reality that they almost become scenes that we would never see, and therefore can come across fake and distant.
Another way that something so mundane can be made into eye pleasing photos is thorough typology. This is the technique of taking matching images and putting them onto a canvas as a way to look pleasing, and almost make a number of diffrent images into one.

Todd Hiddo work
I have chosen Tod Hiddos work for my lighting in the dark task. i really love his work, he Takes images of houses at night, usually with one light on. he usually takes images with a fog around them. He has a very unique way of taking them as he drives to the houses in his car and takes the images out the window.
What i love about them is the eeriness of the image, the one light on in the window makes the image very scary and Misti full, why is there one window on? it reminds me of horror movie posters. he also uses the fog to make the light coming from the windows bigger and more alive. His images are very cold in nature as well ,the neutral colours Abd flat finish of them make it look like the scene has almost been set up.

Photo Journalism task
Name 5 ways the public view media
Aps TV Newspapers Bilbords
Photojournalism tasks 1 and 2
Name 5 places you get news from:
Tv – one of the biggest ways that news and current events are shown across the world.
Apps – Very assessable to everyone through from smart phones, alerts pop up
Newspaper – old fashioned way, often different papers have political lean
Billboards and advertisement – Advertisement on busses and street boards
Word of mouth – news is spread around people, however can be changed from person to person.
Henri Cartier Bresson
Born on the 22 August 1908, Henri Cartier was a French humanist who was considered to be a expert of candid photography. He was a major player in the early genre of street photography, mainly using a 35mm film camera he captured some of the most famous candid images of the people of French city’s and different regens from around the world.
Cosmonauts, Leningrad Avenue, Moscow, 1972
Hyeres, 1932
Rue De Bassano 1931
Henri Carti Bresson was the master at capturing candid images and you can see that in these 4 images. All of them have a daily life feel, almost as if the photographer wasn’t there. He also seems to capture the individuality of the people and places he is in. each image is different but in the same way similar.

Robert Capa
Robert Capa was born on 22 October 1913 in hungry. He is best known for his war photography in the second world war. He has captured images that are considered the best action and combat photos ever created.
Death of a Spanish soldier
German POW being treated by American medic
US troops assaulting Omaha Beach
Robert Capas images are so powerful, they capture all different aspects of war, mostly the negative side but some of his images are people returning and joyfulness away from the front lines.
The way he was able to be on the front line of a battle and still create these images is amazing and his work is more than just a collection of photos, it’s a visual journey through a brutal war.

Oscar Mazaroli exhibition review
Exhibition Questions Name James Ray Class HND 2A Date 19/09/20 Name of exhibition Oscar Mazaroli Location of exhibition Street level
How does the flyer/poster advertise the exhibition?
The image on the flyer is called “the castlemilk lads” this image shows a group of young boys looking attentively into the lens. I think this is a good image for the flyer of the rest of the exhibition as it is a very provocative image and I think draws the observer into the flyer.
What is the suitability of the gallery space? How is the exhibition laid out?
The gallery is layed out in two separate spaces, the first room is full out the images of people in Glasgow, along the walls there are different characters and faces from Glasgow in the 1950s. in the second room, there is more images of Glasgow its self with some landscapes and city scrapes from that era.
How has the work been mounted? Is this appropriate for the work?
The work is mounted at eye level along the walls, I think this is appropriate for this work as it gives each of the portraits an equableness and no one image stands out from the rest.
Who made the work?
Oscar Mazaroli
Who did they make it for, who is the audience? The people of Glasgow, a history of the city
How does it make you feel?
Looking at the work, I feel a sense of simple, looking at the people of Glasgow in the 1950s, everyone looks mundane and unique, there is a simpleness about the way each person is potraid. There is also a sense of community among these images.
There are no cars and chaotic streets, much more simple.
If the work has a title does it make you think about the image/s differently? The title of the work is called the people of glasgow. I think this title is very fitting for the work as it shows exactly that, people going to work, playing in the street or in leisure.
How would I describe it to someone later?
A collection of images that show characters and community of Glasgow
Does the photograph make you want to ask questions, what are these questions?
A question that comes into my head is, how does Oscar make each person look so unique and stand out among everything else.
Is the photograph valuable? How do you know? The images are very valuable not just in terms of money but they have a different type of value as they are a history of Glasgow.
Is the work for sale and who might buy it?
You are able to buy images from street level shop, a history magazine or editor may buy these images, also they are very proactive as wall mounts.
Who organised the exhibition and who selected the work?
A number of different students from Glasgow Caledonian university and Street works team.

say what you see task
In this task we where told to go to Kelvin grove art museum and select an image which is displayed don the wall and talk about it.
this is the image i choose
its an oil painting showing a rather baron landscape with 2 horse men and a child, as well as a dog. The area surrounding the people looks as if it has just seen war or some sort of conflict, the tree to the left looks very damaged and worn, as well has the hills and grass. This is set in an old time so may be representing the aftermath of a battle in the American revolution. The sky is very aftermath of a war like as well. it looks like its been swirling and chopping and now is settling with the sun starting to break through.
i chose this image as i feel it has a very powerful effect on the onlooker. it has a hint of sad quite, coldness to it. However, there is a sense of recovery as the child or small person beside the horse looks to be holding a fishing pole which could signify that this area was his/her home and this lake bit of water is where they used to fish for food.
