here’s the boy we adopted today! he was the perfect candidate
Service Dog Prospects - When to Adopt?
hello disabled tumblr! so i’ve been looking into getting a migraine alert service dog for a few years now, and today an opportunity arose. my local shelter got in multiple dogs ranging in ages and breeds, mostly puppies, and i was hoping to be able to train one. now, here’s where the problem is; i do not know the best age of dog to adopt, or breed.
now, these would be rescues as the breeders in my area are notoriously horrible and i am not in a position to travel for a breeder, and my local shelters are phenomenal.
any advice on not only the best time to adopt a service dog prospect but also the best time to start training the prospect would be awesome. any advice welcome <3

How to Train a Migraine Detection Dog...
This is the most common question I get when I tell people what tasks Faith does for me. First you have to teach your dog WHAT he is supposed to be detecting. Whenever you get a migraine, take saliva swabs with cotton balls, put them in a double sealed air tight container and freeze them for training. Always label them with the date, degree of pain, and how far into the episode it was.
You then have to think about what you want your dog to do when he senses the migraine coming. Be creative, but also think about those around you. A bark is a nice alert, but do you want your dog barking in public? Pawing you is nice, but does your dog paw you for other things? I’ve seen dogs spin or bow to alert, but if you work in a crowded environment do you want your dog to get up and spin in front of everyone? Think of something specific and noticeable, yet discrete to others. In my case, Faith alerts me by pawing my knee.
Then you need to teach your dog to alert you when he smells it. Start by just using the scent from a single migraine. Have him smell it, and tell him to paw, bark, nose, etc (whatever you want the alert to be). After enough repetitions of “scent” “paw” “yes!”, “scent” “paw” “yes!”…. your dog will start doing the alert behavior upon smelling the article. Then switch to a different migraine with a similar pain level, and alternate. This will make sure your dog is not just learning to alert to random things like what you ate, how you were feeling, etc. In order to alert and get rewarded for it he MUST alert to the migraine scent only.
Once your dog is alerting to the migraines, start mixing in blanks. At first just use blank cotton balls, and gradually switch to blank saliva samples. If your dog alerts to a blank, ignore it. If he still alerts, turn your head and give no attention. He will probably get frustrated and think “what’s wrong? She put cotton balls in my face, shouldn’t I alert her?” At this point switch back to a migraine. Reward for alerting. Switch to a blank, and reward as soon as he looks at you as if to say “nope, not this one!”. Start throwing in pre-migraine swabs, various blanks, and various migraines until he gets it. It takes a LONG time, but it’s well worth it! A fully trained detection dog usually takes about 2 years to train, with 1 hour practice every day.
The Polypropylene jars that are best suited for training an alert dog can be purchased on Amazon or various other sites. I use the 2oz jars because they fit my dog’s nose size well, but feel free to use any size you would like (within reason). PLEASE be careful and treat your scent articles like toxic chemicals that cannot be mixed. The migraine is already one of the hardest scents to teach since the brain chemical that’s released before we get one is so slight. It takes a very special dog with a strong nose and work instinct to be able to pick up on the scent. Even the slightest cross contamination can set back months of training.
If you ever have any questions in regards to training an alert dog, feel free to contact me and I’ll be sure to respond.
