The Value of Being Media and Information Literate Individual
The best value of being a media and information literacy is the idea of becoming a starting point. A source or a starting point of an information is capable of translating it through the media. To become a media literate, one must learn rather than memorize facts about media. To become an information literate, one must be able to recognize when information is required and to locate, evaluate, and effectively use the required information as a guide to them. Nowadays, media is important in our daily lives, especially for teenagers like me who use social media platforms like Facebook, Messenger, YouTube, Tik Tok, Instagram and so on. It helps us gain knowledge of what we see in social media, communicate with others such as our Family, Relatives, and Friends, and it can also be an entertainment source. And it helps to keep one informed about what is going on in the world to stay up to date in news in our society or in our surroundings.
However, excessive exposure to gadgets can have negative consequences. Students can use mobile technologies to research a doubt for social studies, search for a question in homework, and graph a mathematical problem. It is the strategy that combines these two fields as a set of competencies knowledge and skills required for today's life. Media and Information Literacy takes into account all forms of media and other information providers, including libraries, archives, museums, the Internet, and other technology. Media and Information Literacy is about assisting us in becoming competent and critical thinkers when it comes to discovering information. Media literacy emphasizes the ability to understand media functions, evaluate how they are performed, and use them for self-expression, whereas information literacy emphasizes the importance of access to information as well as the evaluation and ethical use of such information. It emphasizes free expression and information because it empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information providers, evaluate their content, and make informed criticism as users and producers of information and media content.
