i love when im reading a fic, which for plot reasons includes some professional knowledge or academic topic, and i can tell the author wrote it with that content in mind first and the actual characters of the media second. just finished a true detective fic and yeah sure maybe they did all this research on the American west because they love rust and marty so much, but the epigraphs in each chapter came from books in the $30-$120 range, unavailable in free digital forms, nonexistent in most public libraries, with excerpts found only on subscription based databases, and i cant count on two hands how many times the fic branched off from dialogue into sprawling deep dives on the culture surrounding hollywood westerns and the existence of gay rodeos. im more inclined to think this is how they plan on teaching others about it and it’s working
