I was great to hear how Sophia's end of the business works and how knowledgeable she is about jewelry and business side of things. It's wild how big a brand can mark up the price of jewelry cost to make price. My favorite part was hearing about the different meanings behind the gemstones. Week 4!
This week we toured DVF (Diane von Furstenberg) a luxury womenswear brand located right between the Meatpacking district and Chelsea's Market. Founded in 1972, DVF specializes in curating their own individualized prints/patterns for their clothing.
While touring we got to see story boards about how the design team conceptualize their print design while still remaining tried and true to Diane's legacy. My favorite part of the tour was getting to style a look for 1 out of 3 of DVF's customer base. For the last part of the tour, team members for DVF's production and graphic design teams were kind enough to discuss more about their role and do a Q/A. Overall the tour a was a nice way to see some of the inner working of a business, and how different roles can overlap.

First study tour of the semester, and I got to enjoy a scavenger hunt all around the garment district! First part of the tour, we searched together as a whole class. I think my favorite stop from this portion is Bryant Park and the Inside Out: NY Together. From what I'm told, the Needle Threading a Button Statue that sits ontop of the Inside Out... kiosk has a significance related to NYC's 5 boroughs! Yep, you guessed it, the 5 button holes represent the 5 boroughs.
We eventually dispersed as a class into small groups for the rest of the tour which was a little hedd turning to say the least. We traveled down 34th St. which is well known for it's abundance of retail stores. We got to see the largest Macy's store in the world, Swedish shopping mecca H&M, and so many others while continuing our scavenger hunt. Unfortunately, the scavenger hunt comes at a close as we ran out of time: partly because we were enjoying the scenery and maybe because we were a little turned around in the city. Nonetheless, one of the last places and one of the coolest we saw was Madison Square Garden, home to several sporting, concerts, and other entertainment events! All in all it was a fun first tour
See you next week and signing off- Jade
