Quarantine experience
Being in quarantine has made me realize I hate not doing anything. I’m a very active person who loves to move around outdoors and being stuck inside has made me grumpy, gloomy and a few pounds heavier. I miss outside please comeback. I hope everyone else is doing well. Congrats to all the seniors, finally can call yourself a college graduate. As for me I’ll be at Rutgers for one more year 🙃

I love how much color Aliza Nisenbaum uses. You would never guess the purpose behind these images are for a political stand point because they show such beautiful moments in time incaptures with plenty of vibrant colours. What I admire the most about her art is that it shows a lot of real life people, not celebrities or famous personalities. It makes it seem like regular people still matter.

I believe with every artwork theirs purpose. Jordan Casteel’s purpose was to show the male figure humanized again. If anyone knows the history of black men and the black culture, they know how humiliating it was to the black man. I agree with her mission on creating these pieces, with so much hate why not spread love. All I see from her targeting her art towards black men is her giving love back to the world in her own unique way. And what makes it more special is that she is a woman. Its like she’s giving her mothering touch on every piece showing you all of the good that others fall blind to see.

Toyin Ojih Odutola
Through black ballpoint pen ink, Toyin Odutola’s drawings question physical and sociopolitical identities as they pertain to skin color. Treating skin as topography, she layers ink as a means of mapping a person’s subjective, individual geography built from real-life experiences. Her interest in surface qualities stems from the history of African textiles, which inspires the artist’s rich textures on flat planes. Concerned with historical representations of black subjects in portraiture, Odutola undermines notions of blackness in her drawings by exploring what it means to look or be perceived as black, as, while drawn in black ink, not all of her subjects are of African descent. More recently, Odutola has begun to look beyond pen ink, working with charcoal and pastels to reflect the cultural diversity and ambition of American cities.
I personal enjoy her artwork because of the way she portrays people of color. Alot of people would be frightened to disrespect the african community with such dark shades of black. But Odutola only enhanced the beautiful hues of having dark skin color. Her works are so simple yet so complex that it leaves you wanting more. I look at her pieces and questions how her imagination can produce such great work. Overall Toyin Ojin Odutola is one of my favorite artist of today and I cannot wait see her future works.

Mary Heilmann in Fantasy
After watching the video of Mary Heilmann I discovered a couple things about her and her art work. She said how she always wanted attention even as a child. This played a big part in why she became a painter and why her artwork was like a painting and a sculpture all in one.I admire her desire to be different.
A couple times Mary stated that she wanted to create trouble with her pieces. I like that idea because who wants boring artwork. Every work of art should start a conversation, and leave your viewers on edge for more. After seeing some of her paintings especially the ones that reflected her favorite religion I wanted to know more. My favorite is (Rose Stoppage, 1990) the colors with the abstract image and the subtle movement throughout the work left me speechless. I appreciate the way Mary Heilmann expresses emotion in her sculptures. Artist like her are the reason we have such diverse pieces in the art world and I would love to see her work in person.

Wow, just simply amazing.
Hi all :D
So, I’m almost done with my painting. I’m not sure what color to paint the background.
I loved doing this painting, not sure if I started it correctly because obviously I don’t have the technique, but little by little I started getting the hang of it. The hardest part for me was blending the paint to transition from the dark purples to the yellow.
Hope y'all like it.

WHAT IS SURREALISM ?!?
Surrealism is a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images.
Giorgio de Chirico Italian, born Greece. 1888–1978
The Duo
Paris, winter 1914-15
Oil on canvas

Painting and Sculpture
Artist Giorgio de Chirico, who made paintings of classical piazzas populated with spectral figures and shadows, knitting together purposefully distorted perspectives and tilted grounds.
The mood this piece creates is liberation. There is so much freedom that you can create multiple stories just from the background. The colors are very warm with a hint of cool colors. The Duo is centered around the two models in the foreground of the painting who kind of dance. What I love most about this painting is that it has subtle movement. Nothing is too aggressive between all the images. The artist did a great job of not hinting a direct path for your imagination to be hindered. Overall this piece is free, calm and potent.

Hello everyone, I hope everyone is well and safe. My time during quarantine is okay. I’ve face a couple of challenges like finding the proper time to study or have the motivation to even do my work. It’s hard for me to be in a place that I created the mood of relaxation and force myself to be productive. I’m so use to staying later at school and getting my work done that the adjustment was a little hard. Other than that myself along with my family and friends are all healthy. Thanks for listening to my little rant 😂

Discussion Questions
How are images transmitted to us (how do pictures find us)? How might they affect us?
Images are transmitted to us through social media, television, and outside influences. They affect us by creating a mood and giving us feelings.
Are they an accurate representation of our society? (Steyerls’ article is an interesting discussion of this)
Some of the images that come to us are a accurate representation of our society and some are our imaginations running wild.

Tonal sketch 1: So, here is the process of the first collage. I changed the background colors to see how it would effect the tonals colors.
