Princess Couture: Mars

Princess Mars’s dress manages to be both simple and elegant at the same time and accurately reflects a lot of the attributes of its wearer.

The most noticeable aspect of Mars’s dress is how it contains two contrasting (yet similar) colors, red and pink. To me, this reflects Rei’s personality; she’s stubborn yet open to new ideas, passionate yet collected, somewhat aloof yet supportive and loving. The dress design itself is also very sleek and elegant, reflecting Rei’s mature and sophisticated character. Interestingly, unlike Venus and Jupiter’s gowns, Mars’s gown contains no gauze or flairs of any kind, although the pink segments of her dress could easily be made out of gauzy material (instead, it appears to be made of the same fabric as the rest of her dress). Perhaps this indicates Rei’s differing tastes, as even in her civilian life she chooses to wear clothing that’s feminine in a more sleek and sophisticated sense as opposed to the more girly and frilly clothes that Minako (and sometimes Mako) wear.

As for the colors, red is seen as one of the most, if not the most, vibrant and energetic colors. It’s a very strong color that can represent anything from love and passion to violence and war. Red has a very energizing effect on many people. Perhaps the reason why red is associated so heavily with burning passion is because it’s the color of fire, the most unpredictable and dynamic element. In addition, red is associated with excitement, energy, desire, power, strength, heat, confidence, vitality, action, courage, and all things intense and passionate. Also, in many Asian cultures, red is the color of prosperity and good luck. As for pink, as the combination of red and white, it contains the passion and power of red softened with the purity, openness and completeness of white. The deeper the pink, the more passion and energy it exhibits.
