NHK didn't invite Perfume to Kouhaku?
It is not known whether NHK did not invite Perfume or whether Amuse and Perfume even turned them down because of their own Countdown Live concert and could not come to an agreement. Last year Perfume was very stressed about taking part in Kouhaku. They had to travel from the Pia Arena in Yokohama to the NHK Hall. A live broadcast from Pia Arena would have been an option. But here too it is not known whether NHK did not want it or whether Amuse didn't want to spoil the upcoming tour.
Ultimately Perfume no longer needs Kouhaku. NHK and Perfume have a good relationship. Otherwise they would not have been invited for 16 years. There are various other artists who also do not take part in this years Kouhaku for various reasons and some even never did. Also much more popular groups than Perfume in certain target groups.
Ultimately it was clear that Perfume would not take part in every Kouhaku forever. It probably became a burden. Only the timing may come as a bit of a surprise. And maybe they will be invited again sometime.
In general, Kouhaku and NHK have become a controversial political issue in Japanese society. There is a lot of criticism from some people about NHK's identification with Japan, in terms of inviting K-pop groups, for example. I didn't even realize how much a controversy the Kouhaku is for some japanese. lol
The ratings have been falling for years and NHK has not been able to stop this trend in the age of streaming. It may not be a matter of who performs, but rather how the lineup and the program are put together. In any case, the lineup this year is a strange one, with many famous artists and rising stars who have made their breakthrough missing.
The Kouhaku may have lost its luster but it is still considered a popular music show with a wide reach at the end of the year in Japan. Otherwise, so many people would not be talking about this show.
