Sem 4 day 1 (4.1)
First day, 7 of us only. Quite calm and peaceful but the roads were deserted and dry. So we just started with introduction of pipeline for pre-production. The first course is Advance drawing for animation held by Chandan sir.
We learned about 3 act structure. Main thing we learned were story beats. A Russian filmmaker - Sergio Eisenstein ( Battleship potempkin) said that there are these moments that define a film are beads. Like beads of pearl in a necklace. Which further became story beats.
Later, finding a short story to make into visual narrative. I took attila by R.K. Narayan. Most of them were based in Tamil Nadu. I also went into p.l. Deshpande and Ruskin Bond. Also, I should dig into short stories.
Story beats - Defining moments in animation, defining the story, Dramatic, dynamic beats, gives a glimpse of film, key frames which define the narrative.something that changes course of the film. That’s that.

Photography
What is a photograph though?
For my university course on basic photography with a dslr camera. Well clicking pictures is fun but sometimes it doesn’t make sense. Why am I doing this? I am surely not liking to clicking to click some phenomenon happening, neither when people are dressed up and posing. Its appealing to click pictures, of people who are dressed up and an ambiance has been created for a photographer. But somehow that doesn’t feel like my aesthetic. I am getting more attached to click scenes which pass through human eye but one doesn’t notice it. I think its happening to me as being in animation and drawing each frame. Even that one frame says a a lot and any transition of emotions could be interpreted in that. do images need to talk? or tell a story? or should be a aha moment? or should be something that inspires you?
I am seeing people clicking these random things and I am not liking what I am seeing. Why is it necessary for me to see this? Like friggin tree roots which look like sculptures? But being a person who likes sculpting I will pass. But just a stream? What’s there in it to see? Are there a lot of connotations coming out of it? To be frank, I don’t see it coming through the person who is clicking it. He is clicking it because the water is sparkling. I didn’t like the composition of it either. Something that is resonant is needed here. When are people most resonant? I am when I am swimming. some are when they see food. some when they see art supplies, some when they see batman, for some pop stars. What do I like to do? I like observe people and their understanding their emotions. Why do they do something? Why is she wearing that? What is he staring at? Is that person in void of his thoughts? People immersed in their own thoughts is also an amazing thing to see. Or what does a person do after work? What are their habits? What face does when they see something they like?
Now coming at landscapes, what does a landscape picture say to me? the ones which I have clicked up till now, each remind me of that day and that situation and the people I was surrounded by. How do bulls fight? What accessory they own describes their inner self? what useful thing? Which view will describe the situation in one frame? How far should I be? How will the things besides the subject come together as a whole and describe the subject as whole?
A photograph to remind of that time. Its been so long. I have come far from that day. That picture reminds me of that time when we... What not. I also remember the odor of that day sometimes when I see an old picture.
Are the elements of composition always necessary? I don’t know, man.
Maybe one day, I look up to you, fly on.

Day 11
30 July 2018
I started making with the info-graphic for the secret of kells. I showed my mentor some explorations and he said that he was expecting something like that. I had painted the symmetry’s in the film. And patterns & textures. We combined it and tried to make it into composition.
Later we had a break the ice session with seniors and the faculty. First we had introduce our self using a object on the table. I choose a swimming cap. Okay, and now I regret what I said. Then we were made into 4 groups, my group had to enact like a Bollywood drama news channel. Then we played appy-pong. Later, a balloon tail and at last we had to paint some parts of our body and then walk on a piece of paper. The last one was fun and Then we celebrated July born people’s birthdays. I also got a bay-max chip with my name on it.
I interacted with my batch mates about my film, but not much reviews from them, but I got to see their work. I also got new ideas for mine. Someone had an idea to make it pop out, while someone made it continuous through timelines, a story in series. Other people made a poster. Also some of my friends were convincing other one that the film which he chose didn’t make much sense.
I should be regular. I kind of have a feeling that I may not do it. But I will definitely try to write of some important days, where I learned a lot.

Day 7
23 July 18
Today we started with daily sketching of live poses. Less and less symmetry in poses. Also, no use of wrist to draw only pivot by elbow. We are given themes and we have to pose as the end action.
Then we had mid course exam for film appreciation course. The questions were as follows - 1. difference bet. American continuity style (Hollywood dream factory) and French new wave. 2. Draw the following and describe (okay I totally lost it in this) a. Master view b. extreme front view c. tilt d. truck e. dolly. 3. explain in detail “ Magic Mile” (we were told to see this before) 4. Explain the elements of film or simply how a learner should analyze.
Later that day we talked with our professor and about why took animation design and then we saw some animation films. c

Day 6
21 July 2018
We learned the difference between American Continuity style and french new wave. Below attached photos show the difference and camera shots and some more movies to watch and search.
Then we started with roman holiday, to understand american continuity style. Which was something like like cuts and objective shots & subjective shots.
To counter this style which was a lot superficial, french made spoof films. We saw a film known as “breathless”. The male protagonist smoked a lot and cleaned his lips after that. (I don’t know do smokers do that?) He was as***le and he was running from cops. It was a noir. I need to watch it again to understand its plot. Well we observed the camera movement. Alienation
Then we saw 2 films with long shots one was before dawn a short film done only in one shot, but the story was clearly visible. Refugees running away but in the end they all get caught by police. But the end scene there is one clever guy in the truck and now he still on run. No privacy, no freedom, no freedom of speech. The second one was “Maestro”, it is 1 shot animated film. It shows how controlled a person can be. No freedom. No freedom of speech. How one can be controlled by power. Its absolutely amazing. This film has impacted me a lot and how something beautiful as this has so deep meaning. Ahh! and the animation, the lighting, the textures, everything is at the top. I don’t know if I will get over this film. But it is definitely in my top 10 list.
Zoo, was also another film which was screened for us. Its so disturbing. We also saw it frame by frame. The sound is totally opposite to what they are showing which was making it funnier but still I felt kind of aghast. Inequality between humans and animals. Even though human actions are a lot similar to animal actions. Humans are teasing, ridiculing, bullying and insulting them. That’s not good. Man is the animal over here.
I was talking with faculty of the film “birdman” which was related to long shots. So, he told me that here long shots are not for camera experimentation, but to show his inner thinking and inner self which is claustrophobic and long completely like a maze. Also, I asked him about the last scene, in which birdman flies. He said that, the man is so much into his character that he starts flying. But then was he actually, as the last shot suggests? He said that the director was so much in love with that character that he just wanted him to be real.
Then we saw a documentary as we are going to see animated documentary films eventually. It was known as “samsara”. Okay, it shows nature and I kind of felt completely dumb by watching it. I started feeling like why am interested in such materialistic things ? But, my friend told me that it meant death and rebirth. There was a Buddhist art which they were making which I think I had seen before, on a book suggested by a friend, it was about reincarnation. I also need to watch this again.
P.S. I left nihongo learning.

Day 5
20 July 2018
First we saw Citizen Kane. Okay, Its wonderful. Every damn thing in it is thought about. Its based on democratic, literature. Also this film has tons of different camera experiments like panning (which is absolutely beautiful), Less cuts, Two shots in scene, wide and changing angles. To define a character they have used a behind plane for each character. Also, we learned that every character should reflect the ethos of inner self on the background. The paintings, statues and other accessories are there to define character.
Then we saw “The cabinet of Dr. Calicari”. Okay, extremely strange. But, when my friend explained it to me, she said that the guy was thinking this all the time and he was the one who was going to get stuck over there. Now that I think about it, I think he did make the story to get out of there. Also, the world which they showed to us was quite abstract and the set was of variety of shapes.
Later, we saw “Roman Holiday”. Its damn cheesy and wait what she threw the gelato cone, not even in the dustbin. I also saw someone crying and wiping their face at the end.
We met a new guy today, who works on storyboard for animated films. He showed his portfolio to us and that was beauty. He was telling us to complete the things we wish to do, because we won’t get time later after we enter industry. he also showed us a presentation on different things about story-boarding. Reading blogs, watching films, going for a walk and like how he got a neighbor for playing flute for his video. Talking with tons of people and be ready for everything. Also, he answered some questions.
P.S. I am posting day 2, 3, 4 a bit later. they were hectic and adjusting to new things. I want to insert some sketches too.

day 1
16 July 2018
Day 1 in animation design department. First course : film appreciation. Visiting faculty teaching us.
We all were asked what do know what animation means? First factual and then what we think. Here’s what it was derived from Latin - ‘’anima’ means soul and soul exists in life and life has motion. So there it goes animation. { okay time out - I as person think that there is nothing like a soul, So this will just go liveliness or controlled by emotions.}
Next he asked us what film means : film is a piece of paper which on which visuals are played and audio too. We also talked about importance of sound and how it can affect us.(in brief) Vocabulary is very very very important.
Okay, this was something I didn’t know. So Imagine you are going to movie theater. after reaching there what do you do? Take the movie tickets and go inside. Inside there is lobby which is dim lit. So they are only empathizing on film posters which are already there and upcoming ones. Also, eateries and and entrance to your cinema hall. You enter the cinema hall and you go through a black narrow passage which elevates into the hall which is dimmer than before. You go to your seat. Now the lights dim off slowly and you take the seat. SO after this one goes mind-blank and whatever is around him, he or she forgets it. hence, you take up all the stuff that is expressed through the movie. so a film should be carefully made and also well thought about. Ambiguity.
In later session, we talked about Zen stories and then Charles and ray eames and saw their film. Tops. I will link it down below. Okay, Its amazing. So, I will share it down. These were some of my friends thoughts which a relevant.
1. this has metaphor of life. 2. There are 3 stages that’s why when life is related to it show birth-living-death. 3. On day 2, I will have in detail.
What is communication? “Commune” to community. A community where likely minded people live or society. Direct or indirect communication.
Striking the balance between audio & visual.
