My Problem With Phantom Fear’s Corruption Mod (This is Critique)
DISCLAIMER: I mean no ill intent towards Phantom Fear or anyone who has work on, enjoyed, or supported this mod. This is my opinion alone and if you disagree with me, great! It’s always good to have two sides to a coin. I really enjoy the mod myself, but I wanted to give critique. I’m not trying to be a b/tch or bring anyone down.
I know, based on the title alone I probably have you questioning “what the hell, what’ wrong with it?” and there’s nothing wrong with it, this post is just a few things I wanted to point out and hopefully help give a clearer view on.
My first point that I wanted to bring up is worldbuilding. Worldbuilding connects your audience to the world and helps them get invested. It’s important to ask questions like: “if this happens, what will this do to that?” and so on and so forth.
I feel like we don’t have a clear view of how the Corruption spreads or how it even came to existence in the first place. If we were to remove FNF and just pretend Phantom came up with these characters all on their own, how did the Corruption come into existence?
Because the CM (Corruption Mod) is based on a jumpscare in Week 5, we don’t really have a clear understanding of what’s going on. We see this boy rap-battling a monster that has a lemon for a head, while a girl who has this creepy face sits on the speakers. That doesn’t give us a clear storytelling. Then all of a sudden, BOOM, the boy is corrupted like the girl in the next video.
So that leaves us with two major questions from out the gate, the first being “how did this all start?” and “how does it spread?” (A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION WHEN WRITING DISEASES/PLAGUES.) One can be used for like, this dramatic twist, like “oh, this person made the corruption because ____”.
Let’s move onto the second part of this point, backgrounds. Backgrounds are very important as well; it sets the tone and can leave the audience a lasting impression. Since this is supposed to be creepy and dangerous world for our characters, I think an apocalyptic background would work well. Show that this place is messed up and void of any people. The counters in the videos, like “one left” implies that there’s only one uncorrupted person left alive in this town, city, country, whatever.
Second point is designs, now this is where I may seem like a b/tch, and I apologize for that. I am in no way an artist and I’m sorry if I offend anyone.
The classic black sludge or whatever coating our protagonists is on every corrupted folk. In that sentence, did you notice something? Right. We don’t know what the corruption is or what’s it made of, is it sludge covering the skin or is it (warning, graphic) skin that has decayed?
The design is iconic, no doubt. Anyone who’s not part of the FNF fandom would probably know what’s going on in the design. Here’s where I want to add something.
All characters look the same except for their silhouettes, the way one can solve this is by give more things for the characters in their design, is there different types of corruption, if so, what does it look like? And show us that people have put up a fight against corrupted folk, like have the Corrupted ones have holes in their body or glass sticking out of their side.
I think that’s honestly all the points I have on how to make the Corruption Mod a little bit easier to understand, and I understand if Phantom Fear and anyone who has worked on it don’t want to tell a story and just want to show art. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
TL;DR: I think the mod needs more backstory and questions answered.
(Also, did I make a Tumblr account just to write this? Yes, yes I did.)
