i've always been dogshit at pottery on a wheel because i have weak noodle arms and can't hold my hands firmly in place to center the clay but i finally realized the root issue was that my legs are SHORT since i have the limb/torso proportions of a dachshund and i couldn't brace my elbows on my legs, so i put bricks under my feet and now i can sort of do it!! i've tried to learn twice in the past from TALL people but had a revelation when i watched a medium size guy throwing.

The moral of the story is: don't give up, maybe you just need bricks

a bit long, but -- today i was looking back through some of my old diaries, and it really hit home the extent to which rothko changed my life.

in 2017 i was working a dead-end job i was absolutely overqualified for, underfulfilled in, and desperately trying to claw my way out of. i had decided to legally change my name, which was a long time coming but allowed me some of my autonomy back.

in order to do that, i had to go in person to the public records building in dtla, and since i had to take the day off to go there anyway, i decided to make a day of it and treat myself to the moca a few blocks away afterwards.

i had always liked art, but didn't know much about art history and never really "got" modern art. but since i was there alone and not trying to impress anyone, i didn't feel as silly going all they way up to the suggested viewing distance line (about two feet away) at the rothko exhibit and staring up at the art -- no. 61 rust and blue, to be precise.

i had an immediate, visceral experience of "OH, I GET IT NOW" that i had never felt with a piece of modern art before. that piece in particular, to me, looks very apocalyptic at that scale -- a sky of fire burning away over a deep blue ocean. but at that time in my life, i FELT very apocalyptic, and in a way it validated everything i was keeping pent up inside me, frustrated at where things seemed to be headed. i loved it. it felt like an impetus for change.

that love of rothko stayed with me as i searched for work, and eventually found a job not too far away from moca so i could go and visit more often. after a few years at that job, i was finally earning enough to move downtown…i’ve been there for five months now and it still blows my mind that i can walk a few blocks and visit rothkos in person (whenever they’re on display, at least, which is decently frequent!). i got a huge print of rust and blue for my new apartment, and it hangs right over my work desk now.

Thank you so much for sharing this. It's good to hear how people found Rothko and the different feelings it evoked.
