ᡣ𐭩 notes: at first, i did this in headcanon format but i kept adding more and more words so it started looking awkward in that format 😭 now it’s turned into a whole drabble sooo enjoyyy nonnie hehe!! <33

the two of you first met when you were both ten — always playing together at the neighbourhood playground after school. at first, rindou loved teasing you; he’d pull your hair, mess with your toys, and say mean little things just to make you cry.

you’d sniffle and beg, “stopp… you’re hurting me rindouuu,” with tears welling in your eyes.

he’d just laugh, amused in the way only a mischievous ten-year-old boy could be — a total menace with a crooked little grin. and at one point, his older brother, ran would sometimes have to step in and say, “oi, that’s enough… stop pulling her hair.”

but as the two of you grew older — especially during your teenage years; things slowly started to shift.

the teasing mellowed into quiet sarcasm, and somewhere along the way, rindou accidentally caught feelings for you. he swore he didn’t mean to, but it just… kind of happened. maybe it was the way you’d laugh at his dry jokes, or how you never once tried to impress him, but he ended up falling for you hard. and somewhere in between that slow fall, it hit him like a bullet train that the person he used to mess with just for fun; the one he used to tease and torment at the playground back then, was now also the only one who could make his chest ache like this.

ironic, isn’t it? the girl he once loved to bother when he was younger, was also the same girl he’s secretly crushing on right now.

since the two of you had developed a good friendship, you often confided in him about all sorts of things; especially when it came to your love life. you’d talk to him about other guys — your voice full of hope, eyes sparkling with joy before saying:

“do you think he likes me back???” leaning in like his opinion mattered most. and rindou would just shrug, forcing a grin while trying not to flinch as you gushed about some other guy who wasn’t him.

but not every guy you fell for deserved that smile. some of them weren’t as harmless as they looked.

there was one time — your ex tried to lay a hand on you when you weren’t ready to go “all the way” with him yet.

and when rindou found out about it??? ohhh, he was furious.

he didn’t say a word — just stormed off and found your ex outside the convenience store he always loitered at after school. without hesitation, he grabbed him by the collar and threw the first punch so hard that your ex stumbled back and coughed up blood within seconds. he kept swinging until your ex was curled up on the ground, barely able to lift his arms in defense.

“you tried to lay a hand on her, you fucking prick!? who the hell do you think you are?” he growled through clenched teeth, his voice low and dangerous — as his fists kept landing, over and over again. he made sure the bastard walked away with a black eye, a busted lip, and probably a few broken ribs. and rindou??? he didn’t regret a single second of it.

he never told you about what happened — you only found out later through ran.

“i’m really lucky to have you by my side, rindou… i hope we’ll stay best friends forever~” you’d say that with the brightest smile — so warm, so genuine that it almost hurts. and he’d just smile back awkwardly, saying nothing, because he knows you probably mean every word. to you; he’s only your best friend. but to him?? you’ve been more than that for a long, long time.

and as much as it hurts and even if it’s one-sided — he doesn’t mind. as long as you’re happy, that’s all that’s ever mattered to him.

he’ll stay by your side quietly the way he always has, as your silent protector — whether you see it or not.
