hey so here’s the whole scene

His arm was slung around her shoulders, fingers tracing lazy lines as she leaned into his side. A Beach Boys record played on the record player in the corner. Nellie’s head rested on Darry’s shoulder, feet tucked up on the couch, Pony’s copy of Romeo and Juliet open on her lap. The quilt from Darry’s bed draped across both of their laps. Darry read along with her.

“Mm, this is my favorite scene. Romeo is so head over heels for Juliet, and the way Shakespeare writes it is gorgeous. He calls her the sun. It’s so romantic.” Nellie let her head loll against Darry’s shoulder before refocusing on the page. Before she could read the scene, Darry slipped the book out of Nellie’s hands. He stood and faced Nellie. “Dar! What are you doing?” He smiled mischievously.

“But soft! What light through yonder window breaks. It is the east, and Cornelia is the sun.” Nellie could feel her face flush. “Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon.” Darry knelt and grasped Nellie’s hands in his. Nellie smiled so widely that she was sure her face would split. She had never seen Darry like this. No thoughts existed in her head beside herself and Darry. As he continued speaking, he brushed his knuckles gently over her cheek. “It is my lady! O, it is my love!” He whispered the next line, eyes focused earnestly on her. His fingers found her chin and grasped it lightly. “O, that she knew she were…” Darry leaned in and kissed Nellie softly. He broke the kiss to only say, “You are my sun,” then kissed her again, more fervently this time. Nellie had missed this intimacy with him. She grabbed the sides of Darry’s face to pull him closer.

“That’s just about the nicest thing anybody’s ever said to me.” Nellie smiled into his lips as she leaned back. Darry had just straightened his legs, bent at the waist and still kissing her, when the screen door burst open.
