Inspired by this post by @archetypal-andraste
Going alone to the Holby Fundraiser doesn’t feel like an option - Her heart is still too fragile - and Ric is just a friend. Nothing more.
When his heart tugs him away, leaves her alone, she doesn’t mind. Encourages him, in fact - “If you don’t chase after her, you might regret it,” she says, even as the pain of hindsight, of knowing it’s too late to take her own advice crawls across her skin.
She’s happy to watch the people below. Colleagues - friends - partying, having a good time. It makes her smile. At least they are happy.
But then a body parts the crowd. A head of messy blonde that doesn’t stop to talk, only to enquire. A determined stride that follows as a hand points her way. Up the winding stairs, to the balcony…

How did Serena raise such a brat? My own mother would have given me the I'm-going-to-kick-your-ass-later look that would have paralyzed me in fear and dread for the rest of the day.

Another excuse to look at Bernie’s face: this triumphant glance and smile as she wins the battle for Serena’s attention.

Conversation
A Random Morning at Serena's When They are Working Opposite Shifts (I blame Raf and his Keller romance)....
Serena: Don't feel like you have to stay...[momentarily distracted by how good Bernie looks in boxer shorts and a t-shirt]...if you've got other things to do this morning.
Bernie: [Smoldering from across the breakfast bar at Serena's perfect, luminous décolletage] It's no trouble. Besides, thought I'd take a look at that radiator that's been giving you trouble [throws in a biceps flex for good measure].
Jason: [from his spot on the couch] Dr. Bernie has agreed to watch new Who with me this morning.
Serena: [casting not too subtle heart-eyes of surprise in Bernie's direction] Oh, has she?
Bernie: [sheepishly] Missed out on the more recent eps due to Afghanistan.
Jason: Yes, and we're up to season 5, which I expect will be her favorite.
Serena: [cue eyebrow] And why is that?
Jason: Because of River Song. Alex Kingston has a rather significant lesbian fanbase and Dr. Bernie once described her hair as-
Bernie: [interrupting] Um, ha! It's almost seven, darling - don't want you to be late.
Serena: Indeed, indeed [nostrils flaring]. No video games, Jason - I mean it. You need to rest that shoulder. Walk me to the door, 'Dr. Bernie'?
Bernie: [unnerved by Serena's cool disposition] I, um, don't have a thing for Alex Kinkton, er, Kingston - whatever her name is.
Serena: [pressing Bernie against the door, out of Jason's line of sight] I don't blame you - she's quite feisty. Although, I have to say that Kate Stewart's more my type.
Bernie: Kate who? [eyes roll back in head as Serena's hands and lips begin to wander all over her person]
Serena: Tall, macho blonde job - always has her hands in her pockets. Mmmmm - don't suppose you own a trench coat? [hands wander even lower]
Bernie: [fervently] I'll get one.
Jason: Your attempts at subtlety have failed - I know you are kissing because I can hear your lips smacking together.
Serena: [mashing their lips together even harder] Ignore him.
Bernie: Unf! [fumbles with the front door, dragging Serena outside without breaking contact.]
Jason: Auntie Serena?! Please remember that Mrs. Anderson requests - if you MUST snog your girlfriend in the front garden every morning - the least you can do is make sure she's wearing trousers.

5 New ideas for outlining stories
Maybe you are tired of all outlining techniques out there… the snowflake, the skeletal, the summary, the visual map, you’ve tried them all. And, although they are great, nothing works anymore. Or never worked in the first place. Maybe, when you outline, you feel like the magic is gone, the story has already been told, you don’t need to write it anymore. Outlining makes your bored.
Then, you try going pantser, but you get lost to where your story should be going soon after the first plot point. Not outlining makes you lost.
Tumblr media
We need to jump outside the box of plotter and pantser. No one is 100% plotter, or 100% pantser. We are neither. In truth, we are explores, travelers, discoverers of beautiful stories, sometimes we have maps, sometimes we are following the unknown.
If we outline with fear and/or severity, we are doomed. Outlining is supposed to be on the creative side of the brain. It’s the whole picture of a drawing. Or the sketch of a sculpture. So, let’s try an artistic approach to outlining.
Tumblr media
1. TV Series:
For a moment, pretend that you are not writing a book, but a 15-episodes TV series. Write down a small paragraph to what should happen in each episode. Don’t worry about details, make it general. With 15 episodes planned out, you’ll have a clear view of the story. As you write, use the episodes as guidance.
This exercise helps you explore plot details.
Tumblr media
2. Hours:
Think of your story as the hand of a clock, it has to run through twelves parts to close the circle. Draw a clock, but, instead of hours, write down plot points. Every hour should change the story somehow and guide the characters to a conclusion.
This exercise helps you keep track with the main plot.
Tumblr media
3. Branches
Picture your story as the branches of a tree. Better yet, grab a paper and draw your tree trunk. The trunk is the beginning of the story. Part the trunk into two big branches. These two branches are two different turns your story could take. From two big branches, create four smaller ones. At each split, create a new course for your story. At the end of the exercise, you’ll have many outlines to choose from.
This exercise helps you discover new possibilities.
Tumblr media
4. Mixing
Mix the outline of two existing stories from books, movies or games to create your own. Very simple and easy. Write down one or more paragraphs on how these two stories would merge into one completely new.
This exercise helps you unravel new angles to old ideas.
Tumblr media
5. Tags
Make a list of 10 to 50 words of objects, colors, places, animals or even feelings. Pick three words randomly and try to incorporate them into your story.
This exercise helps you think outside the box.
Tumblr media
You can try your favorite exercise, or all of them.
