What could go wrong?

about: Elliott has more secrets than he would like. Specifically, he has one— one that would earn him a death sentence if anyone found out, and not even his status would be able to save him. As the youngest child of a nobleman and the general of Stirias, his entire life has been in service to the crown. Getting that letter from the castle meant everything he thought he wanted, so why does it feel so hollow? And why does he feel like he's being watched?

what i like: he's so oblivious it's funny. unreliable narration at its best

what i don't like: oh my GOD he rambles. my guy doesn't interact w other people :')

about: Marris doesn’t know what he wants. Raised in a small town with a fisherman father, an engineer mother, and three siblings, he's always felt like he has everything he needs. So when his older sister and hero returns injured from battle, he would do anything to make things normal again. And if that happens to come with an opportunity for adventure— well, he's not complaining.

what i like: the funniest one to write. i get all my humor out through him

what i don't like: he knows too many things and it's forcing me to do worldbuilding :/

it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.

Four royal heirs go missing under mysterious circumstances, sparking a war and uncovering an empire’s true intentions.

genre: high fantasy ya style: 1st person, rotating pov, past tense themes: war, nationalism, & imperialism; escapism; change vs tradition; enemies to friends (and lovers); self-discovery

the world

geography: Haivon is made up of four provinces/kingdoms: Altrei (based in the mountains), Bihaya (based on islands), Tenega (plains/forest), and Stirias (desert). Across the northern ocean are the lands of Ibeira, Morre, and Kelver.

magic: Haivon has elemental magic (air, earth, water, fire). A person's magic is determined by the color of their eyes (gray, green, blue, and brown respectively). Children are born with black irises and the ability to use all four elements, but typically grow into one by age 13.

culture: The series reflects the 16th century of our world, and each place matches up with a real-world culture of that time. Altrei is based on the Chinese Ming dynasty; Bihaya is based on pre-colonial Philippines; Tenega is based on Mongolia's Northern Yuan dynasty; and Stirias is based on the Ottoman Empire.

I hesitated in front of the lone shelf in my room. It had become a sort of shrine over the years, the remnants of a dream of a normal life. Maps of Haivon and the rest of the known world. A wool scarf the color of pines dusted with fresh snow, a shade that  brought on the same smell as that of Aram’s eyes: blackberries and bergamot. And one of my most cherished possessions― my liuyedao, a willow-leaf saber. It had been a gift from my parents almost four years ago, back when they had still entertained my dreams of becoming a knight.

“Sorry, Mom, Dad,” I whispered as I reached for all three items. “But I’m not going to let these just collect dust on a shelf.”

2. We Can’t Go To Hell If We’re Already Here (marris pov)

Of all of the people I had to be stuck with while bored, Palden was probably near the bottom, second only to Elliott.

3. Curiosity and Other Dead Animals (onora pov, same situation as #2, but earlier)

After the second hour of Palden trying and failing to teach us how to play a card game she called ‘Towers and Chains’― to which Marris had (admittedly weakly) responded, “More like…uh, Pointless and Boring.”― we gave up.
