How do y'all feel about this video? It feels a little cruel to me to play a horse race trumpet for a horse to see if they remember racing, since horse racing can cause loads of trauma, but maybe I'm just being overreactive: https://vm.tiktok.com/TTPdBCAhhV/
Rating: Unsure/Not enough info
Racing itself is not inherently traumatic, but there is certainly some abuse in horse racing circles. there is tension seen in the mare's face, but it is hard to tell what exactly is causing that tension in a 7 second tiktok video. it could be any number of things outside of the trumpet sound itself.

copper bits?
Assuming you're asking our opinion-- copper bits are fine. They have a flavor (if you've ever put keys or a zipper or pennies in your mouth lol) that encourages salivation which helps make the horse more comfortable holding the bit. Every horse has varying preferences for bits or bitless tack, though, so not all horses may like copper bits.

hi! i saw a video of a horse at a sanctuary that had no eyes and i was wondering if the horse can have a good quality of life or is it case by case basis? and is it similar to a horse being blind but still having eyes?
They can definitely have a good quality of life but you're right in that it is a case by case basis. Not all horses that become blind cope well, while others may not act any differently after adjusting. Horses have their eyes removed for medical reasons such as uveitis, ulcers, or infection. Not all blind horses will have their eyes removed. There's very little scientific research in this area but anecdotal evidence shows that blind horses can become very skilled in utilizing their other senses to compensate.
They can still live a successful life outside, as well. They tend to latch on to another animal as a guide, typically another horse or mini. With proper training and a skilled handler, they can also still be ridden! "Endo the blind morgan" is one such example.

for all of you who struggle to draw horse feet. :) You’ve gotta have those pasterns in there, as they are the horse’s main shock absorbers, as seen in the “bearing weight” example.
If you can handle an animal autopsy, here’s an interesting vid on how the muscles and joints work in the lower leg of the horse.

Reblogging this version as they have given more details. I realize I did not make it clear enough in my original answer that it should be a case-by-case basis.
Are blankets good or bad for horses? I’ve heard both sides of the argument and it gets very confusing
They are not inherently good or bad, it's when they are utilized that can be beneficial or harmful. As long as a horse is healthy, in good weight with a good winter coat, and has access to forage and shelter they generally will not need blanketed if the temperature is above 5° F. However a clipped, elderly, underweight, sickly, or young horse will need blanketed in warmer temps as they cannot maintain their temperature as well.
A horse's coat is an excellent insulator. It traps air and repels water to a certain extent. Blankets flatten down the coat and remove that insulation which is only helpful if the blanket is providing more insulation than the natural coat. Blankets can cause rub marks or overheating if not properly used.
Summary: healthy and acclimated horses do not usually need blanketed above 5° F. Young/elderly horses, thin horses, or horses that otherwise cannot manage their own body temperature as efficiently will need blanketed at warmer temperatures than 5°.
#this blog has also literally never been ‘pro’ wild horses in north america#the wording on the og post also said ‘usually’ which should imply that this rule is not hard and fast

I also imagine that if your fictional setting has equines with human-level intelligence, you'd be able to utilize character designs for horses with prosthetics
yeh absolutely, even in fiction you could just put a prosthetic on a horse cuz its fiction

what are your thoughts on prosthetic legs for horses?
Unethical in most if not all cases.
Horses are extremely heavy animals with their center of gravity on 4 really small points. the reason why they do not recover from leg injury well is because they instinctively just use all four of their legs and cannot understand to stay off one. a horse wouldn't understand a prosthetic, and continue trying to act like a "normal" horse, and would likely injure itself further.
a mini is really the only horse that could take one, but even then, it would probably be more ethical to just euthanize.

re rick gore even though im late, i used to watch his channel pretty regularly when i didnt know much about horse care and he was very sexist. the most common remarks he'd make are pretty much "women are stupid and more sensitive around horses, they baby them and cant take good care of them bc they anthropomorphize horses too much" and would acknowledge he's being sexist and defend it. i also remember watching a video and i think a remark about transwomen being allowed in and winning beauty pagents[?] coming out of seemingly nowhere, i cant remember if it was transphobic or not but pretty sure it was considering how sexist he is.
Unfortunate, but not surprising.
