“And to this host appeared at last a spirit who resembled none other than El-Estia, queen of ancient times, who bore in her left hand the dragonfire of the aka-tosh and in her right hand the jewels of the covenant and on her breast a wound that spilt void onto her mangled feet.” -Remanada Artwork by Mikhail Pabor.

A religion without ecstasy is a hollow shell, lifeless and unworthy of devotion. It cannot draw upon the sacred fire of the flesh to summon the lightning of the divine. But the true path—ah, it is volcanic! It erupts, reshaping the earth, opening the heavens, a dance of molten soul and sky-born flame. Ecstasy does not come from thought or creed; it is the hidden wellspring, ever-present within, needing no seeking—only surrender.

A religion devoid of ecstatic experience is a dead one. It is not worthy of my attention. Such a religion cannot harness the power of our carnal nature to receive the lightning strike of divinity. A religion that can is volcanic—it renews the earth and opens the heavens. Ecstasy reveals what is already within us, needing neither the mind nor theology to be found.

You've heard of Zeus, Artemis, Aphrodite, and many more Greek gods. And you've probably heard of several renowned mortals of myth: Odysseus, Heracles, Helen, Cassandra. But unless you're a Greek scholar or have been to Spring Mysteries before, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Baubo.
Who was Baubo? A goddess, a mortal? And what does she have to do with the Spring Mysteries Festival?
The thing is, no one actually knows if Baubo was a goddess or a mortal. Even when reading scholarly articles, sorting out interpretation and hypothesis from fact is a mean feat. At SMF, the ATC recreates the ancient Mysteries of Eleusis every year, and Baubo has a small but integral part. This year I have the privilege of being the priestess of Baubo.
