Theta Chi Fraternity presented a domestic violence awareness event lasting three days this past Tuesday through Thursday. This campus wide event called “Theta Chi – Take Charge!” contained multiple self-defense classes for free by the Karate Club at Sam Houston State University. “I feel like in turn of recent events, it was a good idea to teach people around campus how to defend themselves against attackers.” organizer and VPHS of Theta Chi Rico Graves said. Within the month of February, there were 3 reported assaults on Sam Houston’s campus. This inspired Theta Chi to put on an event to help teach students how to defend themselves incase of future incidences.
On the first day of the event, over 100 people attended a presentation over assaults on campuses as presented by David Sommers. “I’m really proud of the turnout for the presentation and I hope some people learned something they didn’t know before hand.” David said after seeing a full theater. The second day of the event was centered around physical defense taught by the Karate Club of Sam Houston. Rico Graves commented, “I’m really happy everyone came out for this event. I’m happy to be apart of something that could hopefully change someone’s life.”      The third and final day of the event had Theta Chi brothers stand in the mall area with a sign for people to stop by and take pictures with to show their support for the event. With over 200 photos taken, the event came to a close.

Title: McDowell_BidDay
With Fraternity Bid Day quickly approaching on Sam Houston State’s campus, there are some things people must be. aware of before going out on that day. Bid Day is a term used to give a shortened title to Fraternity Formal Recruitment coming to a close. Stereotypically, initiated pledges will undergo extensive alcohol consumption as a way to celebrate their new found Fraternity. This years Bid Day will take place on Saturday, February 9th, 2019. Over 76% of congressmen are apart of some sort of Greek organization, all getting their greek start on Bid Day.
President of the Theta Eta Theta Chi Chapter David Sommers said “bid day is the scariest day of the year for Greek orgs. There’s a lot of people to worry about. You have to keep them safe but also make sure they have fun.” As a president of a fraternity on campus, Sommers advises everyone to stay safe on this terrifying day. He later goes on to say, “Our main goal is to make sure everyone and anyone is safe. That includes people not involved with our Bid Day.” Repercussions will be enforced on the chapter if they do not comply with following the rules. In 2017, three initiated brothers, and around 10 bystanders died on Bid Day from alcohol related accidents. Joseph Moore is not apart of Greek Life on campus but goes on to say, “Well I certainly will not be leaving the house Saturday. I’m not scared of what I will do, I’m more scared of what people will do to me.” Obviously expressing fear to leave his home, bystanders are encouraged by Joseph to stay indoors Saturday. Fraternities have certain regulations in place to try and prevent these instances from happening again and have their own unique guidelines to safety.
