No. 1, Taylor Swift
“This is a song called ‘Tim McGraw.’ For those of you who haven’t heard it and think I’m weird right now, I’m just gonna go ahead and explain myself.”
Taylor Swift, then 16, previewed her performance of her debut hit in the kitchen of Billboard’s New York office in 2006. “It’s not really about Tim McGraw, and I’m not a stalker,” she reassured staffers. Before starting to strum the song, she added, “This is a song that’s on your charts right now.”
Hundreds of charted songs later, Swift reigns as the No. 1 name on Billboard’s Top Women Artists of the 21st Century retrospective. In January, she was revealed as the top artist overall of the past 25 years. Her chart achievements include those that shattered prior marks. Her 14 No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 tie her for the most among soloists, while she claimed the entire top 14 titles on the Hot 100 dated May 4, 2024, all from her latest LP, The Tortured Poets Department. Along the way, while segueing from country to pop, she has cradled 14 Grammy Awards (becoming the first act to win album of the year four times), staged the record-breaking The Eras Tour and advanced artists’ rights by rerecording four of her first six LPs.
In 2019, Swift was named Billboard’s Woman of the Decade. In a longform interview, she reflected on her career arc and her love and appreciation for all who have been by her side (including her cats). “I wouldn’t give myself any advice. I would have done everything exactly the same way. Even the really tough things I’ve gone through taught me things that I never would have learned any other way,” she reasoned.
Swift also discussed how women artists are often treated differently than male counterparts. “I hope people can call out … if you see a Grammy prediction article, and it’s just two women’s faces next to each other and feels a bit gratuitous,” she said. “No one’s going to start out being perfectly educated on the intricacies of gender politics. The key is that people are trying to learn, and that’s great.”
