Yea my dad has one of those! Nyneave: Mattrim, be quit, we have to be subtle or Liandrin will find us! Drunk Guy: Oh, Liandrin Guirale? The Ghost Witch of Blood and Doom? there are two competing sects on this website - one that uses the word "spicy" to mean "neurodivergent" and one that uses the word "spicy" to mean "sexual content." i do not like either of them

me as a kid reading Dune: I appreciate the detailed world-building that justifies why everyone fights with swords and has mental powers, but the idea of a Butlerian Jihad against computers is pretty silly
me in 2025, trying desperately to find the three (3) places you need to go to to disable the latest helpful AI assistant that's inserted itself into my work chat and is advising me to do things that would be a breach of federal law: Oh Now I Get It

But this does actually sound like an interaction they would have
Monroe, on the phone: how did Renard die?
Trubel: cats ate his face.
Monroe: no, Renard, how did he die?
Trubel: cats ate his face.
Monroe: g— just give me to Nick.
Nick: hello?
Monroe: how did Renard die?
Nick: cats ate his face, here, trubel knows more about it than me.

J. R. R. Tolkien: no, my books aren't about the war I experienced. It's just a story
J. R. R. Tolkien's works: you cannot go home, war ends entire bloodlines, you are mourning the death of your brother alone, you dug into the earth and permanently scored the land, you cannot explain what you have been through, you cannot go home, "that wound will never fully heal. He will carry it the rest of his life", leaving the women behind does not save them, the young die first, you cannot go home, the parent will bury their child, you have lost the wives and you will never connect with them again, "how shall any tower withstand such numbers and such reckless hate?", you are not the same, you cannot go home, you can never go home, your father will only side with those he sees as worthy bloodlines and you cannot change his mind, it is more meaningful Not to kill, sometimes your sacrifice accomplishes nothing, you cannot go home

One thing I often think about when it comes to the Jackson films’ fleshing out of the Elrond and Arwen storyline is how in Return of the King, Elrond straight up just admits that he’s seen Arwen’s son through his prophetic visions — presumably a similar scene to the one she saw, but with her instead of Aragorn holding the child.
And yes, obviously the actual point being made there by the film was that Elrond lied to/misled his daughter because he didn’t want her to die.
But can we just take a moment to think about him actually experiencing that vision? That’s his grandson. That’s his grandson. This elf, who once wholly gave his heart to a mortal infant brought into his household, looking into the future and seeing the proof of the love he has given both Aragorn and Arwen. That’s his grandson right there, all of five years old and destined for a more blissful life than any of his ancestors. That’s his heir and Elros’ heir, messing about in a forest with two people whom he loves more than the world. That’s his fucking grandson.
And can you just imagine what it must have been like, coming out of that vision? The cold understanding that this is what it has come to in the end. That his grandson, his very first one, would be the collateral damage of his daughter’s salvation. That out of all the thousands of possible futures knitting about his head, there’s not a single one in which he can save them both.
edit: i’m so sorry here’s some cute grampa elrond content to make up for it

I'm making a small return to tumblr after years of absence simply to scream about how much I really DON'T LIKE JULIETTE.
I'm in the middle of a rewatch of Grimm and dude, 1) you don't get to decide of Nick does or doesn't want his powers back. 2) you chose to help him get his powers back 3) his mom? really? 4) you helped steal someone's baby.
She's right, there's enough blame to go around, she's just not willing to take on any of it.
