Proposing in Georgian Times
In my opinion, Mr. Collins´ proposal is only for hisbenefit. He does not love her. Also, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, his patroness, “advised” him to get married: (…) “Mr. Collins you must marry. A clergyman like you must marry” (…). (Capter 19) His marriage proposal is structured, ridiculous, even Elizabeth wants to laugh. She tries to decline him politely. But Mr. Collins refuses to accept “NO” as an answer, because he is very stubborn. So, he insists over and over again, thinking that Elizabeth will change her mind. Mr. Darcy´s proposal is more sentimental. Without losing his characteristic of a distant, arrogant and serious man, he tries to explain his feelings in the best way that he can. But it does not result very well. He says: (…) “in vane have I struggled, it will not do, my feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you” (…). (Chapter 34)
Mr. Darcy emphasizes the differences; he accentuates Elizabeth´s inferiority instead of expressing her feelings and asking her to marry him. Elizabeth feels angry and inferior, so taking into account his previous prejudices towards Darcy, she decides to decline the proposal. Lastly, I think that in the movie, Mr. Collins proposal scene, is less faithful, in terms of dialogue and bodily expressions. From my point of view, in the novel, Elizabeth is more polite and gentle when rejecting him. Otherwise, in the BBC version, Darcy´s proposal scene is more faithful to the dialogue and the descriptions given by Jane Austen.
