Prototype
Three tasks for prototype:
1. You live in South Auckland, and you are looking to join an allotment garden. Search for it!
2. You live in Manurewa - find the closest garden to you
3. Join the garden you found!

Run through of concept generation
CONCEPT 1 : Garden Management Tool
This concept quickly became redundant as I did more research into community gardens for two reasons:
This concept only catered to allotment-style gardens. However, allotment gardens are only one type of garden that operates in Auckland. As such, this concept would only be valid for a fraction of the operating gardens.
The other reason is that most community gardens offer workshops - some of the workshops are mandatory when you join - therefore this design of 'plan it yourself' effectively becomes unusable.

CONCEPT 2: A connection service between community gardens and volunteers
Concept 2 was based on task rabbit - a US-based service that gets 'taskers' in touch with people who need tasks done around the house.
I thought this might be a concept to get community gardens in touch with volunteers.
CONCEPT 3: Café and Community Garden Upcycling Initiative
Observation
I joined a community garden volunteer day at Auckland Women's Centre. I helped create a compost pile at this event to create new soil. In making the compost pile, I noticed that to create the compost pile, we used canvas coffee bags that had been upcycled from a local café. The event organiser also told us how she was in contact with local businesses. She said they had items they wanted to dispose of but that these items could instead be used in community garden projects.
The idea was to create an upcycling initiative between cafés and community gardens. Below is brainstorming for the concept for Café and Community Garden upcycling initiative, mapping out how it would function.
Ultimately scrapped this idea because it started growing beyond the scope of an interaction design solution and needed more of a business model developed.
CONCEPT 4: A Community Garden directory for Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland
After interviewing a few people, I found that the knowledge I had gathered was valuable. I spent this time trying to understand community gardens I overthought the solution. I validated this finding with a survey.
As discussed in the previous evaluation, users needed a way to quickly and more accessibly find out about their local community gardens. This gave way to Māra, my community garden directory. A one-stop place where users to seamlessly find their local community garden relevant to their needs.

Lofi Prototyping
Doing the lo-fi prototyping, I realised that to book a plot may take a bit more effort - I may need to lean more into the interaction design of the service itself and just the app/web element.
I also mocked up a lo-fi prototype for a physical starter pack for people new to gardening that have just started at their community garden.

Below are south community gardens - the one that has a website doesn't seem to have active workshops. A lot of other south Auckland community gardens tend not to have websites.
