Rirkrit Tirvanija, untitled 1990 (pad thai). 1990
from the brain of the institutional rager:
this is one of my favorite pieces. it's so fun. when i first saw this at MoMA PS1 two years ago, i learned that the work was supposed to be performed and engaged with. tirvanija typically has his students (i think) participate in this piece. originally he was the one cooking the pad thai for viewers. this is one of many of his works i got to experience at the PS1. other works included a tea booth where you make take, a turkish coffee stand, and a makeshift garage band. i recently learned about fluxus, and reflecting on these works really makes me connect tirvanija's works and fluxus artists' works. all of the element of audience participation. it's one of my favorite forms of art. i think that allowing people to interact with works also allows people to interact with each other, something that i believe is one of the true goals of art.
