only just remembered the conversation I had with the person who said they couldnât read anything written by a lesbian because they were a bisexual and it would be seen as infiltrating a space that wasnât intended for them and wasting resources that werenât theirs to use and they were terrified of getting in Trouble.

the thing that gets me the most about ableism against pdâs is that ppl will be like âthese disorders make you an ASSHOLE!!!!â and then turn around and pretend that other disorders canât and donât make you act shitty.
depression and anxiety can make you irritable and snappy. they can cause you to refuse to listen to people and to be distant and withdrawn. they can cause you to seem angry, bitchy, rude, uncaring, etc.
ptsd causes an array of difficulties in forming meaningful relationships. it pretty much shakes up your entire worldview and sense of self a lot of the time. ptsd can cause you to get angry often. it can cause you to yell and scream. it can cause you to withdraw from others, run away, or cut them out. it can cause general changes in demeanor and more cynical worldviews. it can make you seem grouchy, negative, explosive, impolite, difficult, needy, controlling, etc.
and yet when people with personality disorders have symptoms of that nature, suddenly we are irredeemable monsters. when itâs npd, bpd, hpd, or aspd instead of ptsd or depression and anxiety, people suddenly and magically lose the ability to be understanding.
mental illness is an explanation, not an excuse. i firmly believe that. hurting others is never justified simply because you have any disorder.
but if you can be patient with people who have depression, anxiety, ptsd, ocd, or any other LESS stigmatized mental illness, you can be patient with us.

the thing i keep thinking about is how katniss, despite knowing the capitol is evil and despite seeing how they edited her games to tell a story, didnât question haymitchâs much at all really when watching them. really drilling in the message that no one is immune to propaganda.

Okay but itâs fucking brilliant that one of the themes of the book was about the distortion of history.
Usually prequels are a dangerous thing to write because unless theyâre planned out well in advance, they risk contradicting lore in the main series. Even still, we knew barely anything about Haymitchâs games. They were the perfect stomping ground for new information, with a rough series of events but without a close temporal connection to the main books.
But though she had this freedom and safety net, while she could have just written a story that aligned with what we knew, Collins leaned into the idea of contradicting past lore head on and made it the damn thesis of the book; that yeah, actually, it did play out entirely differently from how the characters saw it, and yes that contradicts what you were told, thatâs the point.
We didnât really know what happened in the 50th games until we read it from Haymitchâs perspective, because what little information we did have was spliced up and edited. The video evidence was processed through the Capital, and twisted to serve their purposes.
Tackling that idea of history being written by those in power with a notoriously inconsistent medium? Goddamn, writer that you are, Suzanne Collins.

I just canât wrap my head around how thoroughly haymitchâs acts of rebellion were erased. this is a victor who literally set off two bombs in the arena. imagine having to follow a script about your own trauma, while trying to keep track of whatâs âreal or not realâ about the most horrific period of your life.
haymitchâs story is a reminder that the rebellion was decades in the making, built off of generations of grief and trauma. how many other acts of resistance were covered up by the capitol? how many other victors defied them in the arena?

The fact that you can be playing a mobile game and you will be stopped in the middle of the action to be shown an ad, you have to wait 5 seconds before a tiny skip button appears in the top left, which after itâs skipped, youâre then taken to the App Store, which you have to press the âDoneâ button, after which they take you to a small playable advert for the same game, which you have to wait another 10 seconds before an incredibly tiny button appears in the top left to skip, and then after that they take you to an advertisement splash screen that just says the appâs name and a button to go to the app store and download it, which you then have to wait five seconds before a tiny button appears in the top- Iâm sorry how the fuck is this not illegal?

iâm so appreciative to suzanne for reframing the rebellion from the original trilogy as a âthey saw their moment and took itâ type situation and showing us that theyâve been trying, over and over, with so many failed attempts, to break the arena and incite a rebellion for decades. in this current political climate never giving up hope is so essential. haymitch wasnât the first nor the last, and they kept going even when it seemed completely futile, and thatâs what counts, and what ultimately saves them all.

the way haymitch must have seen it as all his ghosts coming back to haunt him at once when katniss walked onto the train with the face of burdock and asterid, the pin of maysilee, the voice of lenore dove, and a background so devastatingly similar to his own. of course sweetheart slipped out. and of course he did everything he could to keep her alive
