So I have this head canon that Bog is half fairy! Probably not the only one but I’ve got my own head canons below.

Fairy Queen- Lorella

Bog’s dad- Flax

Fairy king (by marriage)- Briar

Lorella was very involved with making an alliance with the Dark Kingdom. They haven’t had real contact with the Dark Kingdom for a long long time but when Griselda becomes queen she reaches out and Lorella was more than ready to start the process.

I imagine Lorella goes because she’s of actually royal blood so she wants to be personally involved. At first they have to make trips for small periods of time then longer but fewer visits as they start to learn more about the Dark Forest. The fairy council, or something like that, is still racist for plot reasons so they don’t want to host the Dark Forest. Lorella is very embarrassed by this.

I like to think that Flax was one of the Lorella’s party when they visited the Dark Forest. Idk if he was a guard or an ambassador or something, either way he was experienced with the staff rather than the blade. He had long black hair with a streak of grey that he wore in a loose bun. His wings are like a Spicebush swallowtail

Griselda and him bond over being playful jerks to each other. That’s the best way to put I’d idk what to tell you.

Lorella knew about them and didn’t care and even encouraged it in the beginning. No one really expected they would actually be able to have a kid but they do, it’s Bog. Even though most everyone there is excited everyone comes to the decision that they won’t tell the Fairy Kingdom yet because they might face setbacks.

Now I imagine that as Bog wasn’t born with wings and had to wait to develop them like most fairy children. Also that his exoskeleton grew with him and started with smaller and weaker scales covering his body. It wasn’t that he was weak he just wasn’t as adapted as most native creatures of the Dark Forest. More durable than a fairy but not quite enough for the swamp.

He was about 5 when Lorella had Marianne and stayed in the Fairy Kingdom for a while. Flax was able to stay with a small party in the Dark Forest to help the natives there with whatever they needed. Bog learned how to us a staff as a weapon from Flax in the time he was there. Mainly because Bog wanted to learn but also because Flax was worried about him getting hurt. While beautiful the Dark Forest was dangerous and the natives did fight a lot for power and respect. It was part of who Bog was and Flax didn’t want him at a disadvantage. After a year and a half Lorella started visiting again and a half year later Bog was back to seeing Flax ever few months again.

At age 8 Lorella was pregnant again and Flax was able to stay in the Dark Forest again. He stayed another 2 years before he had to go back to the Fairy Kingdom. In that time Bog started to develop his wings and before Flax left he promised to be back to teach Bog how to fly. And that was the last time Bog saw his dad.

I still don’t know if it was a predator attack that killed the traveling party or something else but somehow that’s how Lorella and Flax die while traveling to the Dark Forest. Briar now with total power and angry because his wife is dead blames the Dark Forest and decides to block all contact.

Now I made myself sad by thinking about a little 11 or 12 year old Bog trying to learn how to fly on his own. Practicing the staff on his own. And I imagine not being as naturally fierce, both in personality and expression, as his peers. He probably had to work really hard to build that persona and work on his snarl because he can’t just naturally do that.

Worst part about not being an artist and having hyperfixations is I have entire scene planned but I can’t do anything with them so I just sit there like

Everything and everyone are strange... Which is pleasing in a way

So I have said many times that Marianne stands out against a background of other fairies. For them the princess is weird. And we know being not like others can be difficult. It’s obvious a tough girl’s used to feeling herself odd. And this’s so annoying for a strange person faces with idea ‘strange means bad’. I suppose Marianne was tired because of this representation of her personality. You can see it when the king called his daughter ‘unique’ (here, a euphemism for ‘weird’)

But when the princess meets Bog and his world Marianne understands that being strange is actually cool because first of all it means for this fairy to be herself

That’s a thing that I love about Strange Magic the most. Beside other thoughts like ‘hideous, not hideous, whatever!’ or ‘everybody deserves to be loved’ there’s something more important… Like many people love to say Strange Magic is actually strange. Yes. It is. And how this fact can prevent me from enjoying the movie? We always say Strange Magic is about love, and we’re talking about this romantic part between local Beauty and the Beast. But this story tells about love for yourself (I mean some strange part of yourself) too. Not all people feel in the same way like Marianne, it can’t be a problem for them. However, it’s still a big deal for a lot of us. I really adore how this movie accept and enjoy a strange personality of its characters. And this’s great when you experience something similar. You’re just happy to see this concept – being weird it’s really cool. I’m ‘unique’ (here, a euphemism for ‘weird’) and I proud of it. I’m not like others and that’s my best feature!
