i feel like people hate abstract art not because its “ugly” or “a thing a kid can make” but because all the well known abstract artists are pretentious assholes who think theyre soooooo galaxy brain for making bad art because it “challenges what art is” or some bullshit and we just hate their guts

literally might never be over the fact that verizon bought tumblr for over a billion dollars and in their like five year ownership drove away like a third of this users and destroyed the site so badly that they were only able to sell it for 3 million dollars. it’s just so medieval serf-like. absolutely classic crumbling monarchy behavior. it’s like we’re all background characters in the 5th act of a shakespearean tragedy. i’m gonna lose it

Books of 2019: The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson
This was a reread of the whole series so far, which includes The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance (parts 1 and 2), and Oathbringer*.
Tumblr media
There is very little new praise I can heap onto the growing adoration fantasy fans have for The Stormlight Archive. However, I have to say that I love this series and I have high hopes for the next seven books coming in this series.
The Stormlight Archive is part of Sanderson's overarching Cosmere, however, it can be read without prior knowledge of the rest of the Cosmere (at least the books currently released). I first read these without any idea who Hoid is, who or what the 16 Shards are, or that the Cosmere existed and it hasn't hampered my enjoyment of the series at all.
At it's core the series is about a group of people attempting to fight the (latest) apocalyptic desolation of their world. It's epic fantasy on a grand scale with Sanderson's usual flare for intriguing magic systems and fantastic characters.
What makes this series brilliant is not so much the world, or even the plot - both of which are excellent and only improving with each installment - but the narrative choices and character work Sanderson pours into each novel.
Sanderson's unique structure makes each book compelling for the reader. While the whole story is told through a variety of view point characters each installment focuses on a different character** who is central to the events of that specific novel. We're dumped into the middle of their journey and the narrative unfolds through a series of flashbacks and present day sequences. This is a highly effective way to get the plot rolling, introduce characters, and keep a lot of who these people are a mystery until their backstories become necessary for the plot.
This narrative style is particularly effective in Oathbringer as we discover Dalinar's mysterious and horrifying backstory. I don't want to spoil this as it's truly an emotional rollercoaster to read. However, interweaving the flashbacks from Dalinar's warmongering youth with the present day Dalinar allows Sanderson to powerfully show the character development he went through, rather than just tell his readers. Not only do we understand Dalinar as both The Blackthorn and his later self as a flawed but honourable leader, but Sanderson can also highlight both the horrors and glories of his life without lessening the emotional impact of these events. (I could write an essay on Dalinar and Sanderson's character work in this book so I'll stop here. Ask me if you want me to elaborate with full spoilers.)
Sanderson is a master of his art, and there is so much about this series I could gush about. The character work (not just Dalinar), world builing, magic system, and richness of the different cultures and religions - both Parshendi and human - is truly remarkable, even at this early stage in the series.
As with all works of this size there are parts I'm less fond of. I'm not a huge fan of the interludes - I know why they're there, but I find they disrupt the pace of the plot - I've already voiced my dislike of certain characters (although Shallan is growing on me), the DREADFUL puns that are passed off as witty are just annoying, and 'The Fused' is an awful name for the antagonists. However, my dislike in these areas are minor niggles and my love for the series outstrips the occasional unsuccessful moments.
If you haven't read The Stormlighr Archive you should give them a go. The books are large even for fantasy, however, the writing style and quality of Sanderson's work makes me fly through each 1000+ page book in a few days.
*I don't know what it is with the British paperback editions of these books but they are truly bizarre... WoK is one enormous volume, WoR was split into two parts, and Oathbringer is a HUGE oversized edition! I love the covers though... We were truly blessed with the cover art!
**The Way of Kings centres on Kaladin Stormblessed, Words of Radiance follows Shallan Davar, and Oathbringer (my personal favourite if you haven't guessed) explores Dalinar Kholin.

Marsh: You have dumb ideas.
Kelsier, indignant: Name one.
Marsh: *takes a deep breath* How about the time-
*Freeze Frame*
Sazed, walks on screen: That went on for awhile.
