Non !  Ce garçon n’est pas trop grand pour ce genre de culotte courte ; il doit avoir 14 ans et la culotte est tout à fait adaptée à son âge. D’ailleurs il n’a l’air nullement gêné d’exposer ses belles cuisses nues;

As they have to be in Years 7 or 8 to wear long trousers, I doubt any boy in Year 7 or 8 would wear shorts by their own choice as this is still a school where shorts are compulsory for the younger boys making long trousers a right of passage and a sign of seniority.

Pity the boys are given the choice because shorts and kneesocks look far smarter.

I have read somewhere that this photo is of a 14 year old boy who had to wear the short trousers and kneesocks for his part in an amateur dramatic production a few years ago. After some initial embarrassment perhaps, he found that he actually rather liked wearing them and wanted to do so at his real school. Sadly though, when he did, he was told to go home and change into long trousers. He was perhaps ahead of, rather than behind the times, as recent years have seen a revival in the wearing of school shorts.

What the first photo doesn't show is how the uniform is bright pink!

When I was a teenager still in short trousers and complained about cold legs my mother would respond with

“Cold legs are healthy legs”

“Healthy legs make healthy boys”

If I continued to complain she would then ‘offer’ to ‘warm them up’ for me.  Luckily I mostly had the sense to change the subject at that point!

Thanks to @davcha7476 for this but, as the temperature drops in the northern hemisphere, I just had to reblog it, as a reminder that shorts aren’t just for summer - not for hardy lads like the one on the right anyway. I always think that the well wrapped up little boy looks a bit bemused, perhaps not surprisingly!

The interesting thing is that in 2017 during the UK General Election the school had mock elections with Year 8 boys seeking votes by coming up with their own ‘manifestos’.  

The winner’s main ‘election pledge’ was to lobby for the abolishment of short trousers as part of the Moulsford school uniform!  

So the older boys are not wearing them by their own choice and luckily the vote was just for fun so obviously the school uniform has not been changed.

Moulsford Prep School, Oxfordshire. Shorts optional for the senior boys, but longs are in the minority.

This brings back memories.  If wearing grey shorts as a teenager wasn’t bad enough there were those dreaded moments when mum would swop them for little white shorts when going to an event on a warm Summers day almost always worn with white knee socks! <shudder>

I have a boxed Hornby APT ‘Advanced Passenger Train’ set.

I remember the the buzz when the Intercity 125 high speed train using regular track was introduced exceedingly close to me in 1981 but it didn’t quite work out as well as they hoped.

The first prep school I attended was located in Kenneth Grahame’s old house, the one where he actually wrote Wind in the Willows.

The tales from Wind In The Willows made an impression on me.

I see myself as the boy second from left, the boy in the glasses, the class goody goody who despite doing nothing  wrong is about to get the cane because his class mates were mucking around.  The teacher probably knows full well I have done nothing wrong but thinks it will be good for me to get the cane with the rest of the class.
