what's an easy way to differentiate bastions from a glance? ill be watching a stream and theyre like "oh yeah this is stables :3" and all i see is a cube of blackstone
you explore the bastions inside and out until you know them intimately.
to me each bastion looks incredibly distinct from one another, and they are once you know what to look for. when you're inside of one it can be a bit more difficult to tell which, but the layouts are unique enough that as long as you know basic routing for all 4, you should be able to tell them apart pretty easily.
it's sorta hard to explain in a way that doesn't just sound like "you can tell which one you're looking at by the way it looks" but i'm gonna give a brief overview of each one that's hopefully helpful.
so this is bridge. it's got the iconic gold chalice, as well as those two pillars coming up from the bottom that connect to the horizontal runway sticking out of the center. the center "pigface" bit is actually taller than even a triple chest rampart, which creates a shape that no other bastion has.
now THIS is treasure. from the outside, it's smooth and cubey in a way that no other bastion comes close to. the other bastions might look like a cube, but like. their walls are jagged and bumpy, they have weird arches and depending on how the ramparts generate, they can vary wildly in overall shape. treasure does not do this, treasure is a smooth cube. and there's also those lava moats, those are pretty unique.
stables.. this one is pretty ugly. the lower section is layered, with thick blackstone pillars and arches in the middle. up top, we have three ramparts, where each one has a chance to be a single chest, two single chests, or a double chest and a single chest(this is what they call a triple) the gold blocks can be in a gap, which is like.. a thing on the left or right side of the bastion which will either generate with gold blocks or a single chest. or you can get your gold from a triple chest rampart if they have one. stables is big, it's got hogs running around, and has a higher e-ray spike than the other bastions. other bastions give you a number of around 30-40, stables is often 60-70. i don't like this bastion. look at treasure, and then look at stables. extremely distinct.
HOUSING!!! housing and stables definitely look similar on first glance, but they have some shit that makes them very different. for one, housing is thinner. up top, you only have 2 ramparts as opposed to stables' 3. the right-side rampart will always have a triple chest, while left-side can have a single chest, triple, or nothing. the bottom section is much more open concept, and always generates with a center single chest with nether-wart around it. the gold blocks always generate in the same spot, at the bottom-back beneath the right rampart.
obviously when you're actually playing minecraft, bastions do not generate as a transparent image. terrain makes things much trickier, but you don't even need to speedrun for yourself to get pretty good at identifying them. there also a lot of little eensy tiny unique characteristics in each bastion that make them instantly recognizable that are difficult to explain without me opening up minecraft, going to a bastion, putting my crosshair over some hallway and saying "this thing" but if you watch speedrunning long enough or learn it yourself, you'll eventually learn these aswell.
so i think my advice is. learn the names of each bastion and what BIG differences they have, then go watch couriway and it will not be long before you too can see a single cracked polished blackstone brick and say yeah that's housing

i'll add a few of those little details that i use
i am way too lazy to add pictures, but will tell you where to look. recommend downloading lama's bastion practice map where you can pull up any bastion you want with no terrain and go over it with a fine tooth comb
Bridge and Stables -if you see a wide, wide, wide rampart section from the back it is either bridge or stables. Of the two, bridge is much "flatter" on the back. There's also a little stub of the bridge sticking out on that side that you can look for if terrain isn't in the way.
narrow ones - Treasure is easy to pick out from the back of the rampart if you can see enough of it, because it has these vertical column type things, you'll know it when you see it.
Housing back side is the narrow one that isn't treasure.
Housing and stables - open part of stables is very rectangular, housing has bits and pieces poking in and out, also the rampart is offset from the open area while stables is all in line
it's really common to see only part of the back of a bastion so you can't tell how wide it is, maybe you only know it's not a treasure and it's not a bridge, so what are you looking at
backside of stables rampart depends on whether you are looking at bad gap good gap or middle section. Middle section is pretty flat and has a very unruined looking square hole in it. good gap has some vertical decoration, bad gap is more chaotic and chunkier.
backside of housing rampart looks a bit like backside of stables good gap, if you can see two segments like that next to each other it's always housing since stables would have the middle bit in between
more stuff -I can't describe this well but it's worth looking at bridge ramparts from chalice and seeing the difference in the shape height and basalt bits from single vs triple. saves time sometimes when you know before you get there
then if you're really diligent you can go in the practice map in creative and be like, how do i get to the important bits if i spawn out here on the terrain somewhere and this is all i can see
you can also learn this stuff by just doing it enough but it's a lot slower
there's still some stuff i know i'm not doing right but haven't put the work in to figure out, like i have no idea how to tell sides of ramparts apart and sometimes make routing mistakes from it

one thing that surprised me is how much there is to learn
another is how much you have to be thinking and planning every single moment
what's something about speedrunning that surprised you when you first started? are there any skills in speedrunning that are more important than the average viewer probably thinks?
oh boy oh brother i get to talk about myself
i think one big thing is that there was never any one point where i felt like i’d become a serious speedrunner. it felt(still does) like there’s a very big divide between myself and other runners, where i am just doing this for fun and am incapable of ever being on that level. and that shit does seriously affect your runs- if you don’t go for things that you think are too hard or above your skill ceiling, you’re just not going to get better no matter how much practice you do. minecraft is the first and only game i��ve played genuinely competitively and i only started doing so in late 2021. other than that, my game is pokemon. i love pokemon but it is not minecraft. i absolutely lack experience, game sense, gamer genes, my hands shake, my brain processes things too slowly… but i’m still a pretty good runner, i have sub 12 and i’m still improving and shit. what i mean is that the most surprising thing to me about running is just how big mental is in every aspect. unironically you need to believe in yourself, keep practicing and doing runs and you will all of a sudden be achieving shit that you thought was impossible.
more on mental, one of the earliest pieces of insight on running i was given is that the hardest thing to deal with is how to not give up when you've hit a plateau. i think the reason you don't hear advice on this very often is that there is literally no one solution, and a lot of solutions are temporary. sometimes powering through works, and sometimes it just burns you out and you don't do runs for weeks or months or ever again. what helps me is just the knowing that this problem exists and everyone faces it. if you want to seriously run, you need to find a balance that works for you. there are going to be long stretches of time where you're not pbing and you feel like you're not improving, and it feels SO much worse than it sounds. but like. minecraft is an rng game for little babies, it's going to be okay. this is all part of the process, mindset is all skill.
the adrenaline rush from hitting a goal you set for yourself is amazing, speedrunning is so so so so sooo fun and i don't have experience running other games to compare with, but mcsr feels extremely accessible with all the tutorials and guides and videos and discords with people who will help you. please please please please pleaseeee try speedrunning fulham rain and i are like the only people on here who actively run and blog. well the only ones who regularly interact with mcsrblr, there are others out there and i am aware of them.

Twitch rivals is just so frustrating to watch pretty much every time. They are the one minecraft event with money and for money and they somehow have the most problems every time, it’s crazy.
All minecraft events have bugs sometimes, games break etc. that’s understandable. But in an event with such a huge prizepool it is crucial to have predecided reactions to those problems and consistency in those reactions. This rivals had neither and that is unforgivable.
That said there have been improvements for mc rivals over the years. The wait times, even though long went nicely with players talking to each other and looking for the eggs. The lobby was big and looked nice, it was fun to watch. The tutorial videos were nice for viewers as well, so everyone could understand the game without some separate document.
But getting excited for a game, for example in this rivals one really fun looking hour long game, only for it to last two minutes? That is not an enjoyable viewing experience. Seeing in the chat mid game that the ongoing game is nulled and then after that waiting in the dark as to what is happening? Not knowing whether the streamer you are watching is still in or not? That is not an enjoyable viewing experience.
As a viewer I see ”100k twitch rivals” and excpect that money to show in the event quality. This is not a passion project by volunteers, this is a for profit event with sponsors. And a bad product, bad event, will not sell. Not to sponsors, not viewers. Hopefully we will see some change in the future. I know there are passionate event organisers for mc, it is not a problem of finding people to do the work.

so. that twitch rivals happened.
i learned 3 things:
Twitch Rivals are still inconsistent with their rulings on how games are completed when there are issues.
Sapnap thinks calling someone braindead and a nobody is a valid response to someone who requests rules to be followed.
True friendship bonds can't be broken by the threat of money, no matter the size.
I still believe Feinberg was unjustly stripped of a chance to be in the final. I don't believe it was an intended game mechanic, and hence all of the connect 4 games should've been scrapped - with all 4 semi-finalists splitting the prize. Their feedback is on the way.
I see a lot of tweets calling out certain creators for "being rude" AFTER Sapnap called me "braindead". If someone you didn't know incorrectly labelled your friend as braindead for no reason, would you react positively?
And lastly, HBG are a team. That won't change. We cheer for each other's wins and we mourn each other's losses. When the cards fall unfavourably, we're there to pick one another up and I am more grateful for that than ever.
