Today, 29 november, is a flag day in Sápmi. All in celebration of this woman, so let’s get to know her!
Picture 1: This is Elsa Laula. She was born 29 Nov 1877. She was a Sámi activist, feminist and politician.
Picture 2: In 1904 she wrote a pamphlet in Swedish called “Do we face life or death? Words of truth about the Lappish situation”. She was the first Sámi woman to have her writings published. The same year she also founded the South Sámi Fatmomakka Association, which was the first Sámi activist organisation.
Picture 3: She was also the char(wo)man of the organizing committee of the first Sámi Assembly in Trondheim on 6 Feb 1917. Does that date ring a bell? Well it just so happpens that 6 Feb is Sápmi’s National Day*.
*I forgot to add in writing on the picture that the date for our National Day is in celebration of that first assembly. So the assembly happened first, then afterwards it was decided that that’s our National Day
Picture 4: So why did she do all this? Why did she go through all this work and struggle? Elsa Laula’s father and brother had a court case against some Swedish settlers over a land dispute. Before the court case eve got taken up in the court room, Elsa Laula’s father and brother died in a mysterious drowning accident. The drowning accident was never investigated but Elsa Laula’s mother, alongside other Sámis travelled all the way down to Stockholm to see King Oscar II. This resulted in a letter from the King stating that the land belonged to Elsa Laula’s mother.

"She really is his babysitter, huh?"
[[Video description: It is a video of a Riza Hawkeye cosplayer interacting with a Roy that is, ostensibly offscreen.
Text from offscreen reads "Hawkeye, I need the -"
Riza hands him a piece of paper from a folder.
"Oh, and I didn't have a chance to -"
She hands him a second piece of paper, and reaches for the pen behind her ear.
"Marry me?"
She hands him the pen, and takes one of the papers back as he has apparently signed it and says, sarcastically, "I took care of that too. We've been married for the past seven years."
She smiles as he says "Excellent."
