TADC treads into ' real complex people being forced into architypes' idea that the Last Unicorn explored too.

Obviously, the crew are still fictional characters, but it shows us the big gap between three and two-dimensional characters. Tv Tropes calls it Flanderization, where a character is sanded down to a core trait. The whole point of a character is to simplify/exaggerate (caricature) and I guess there's horror in real people being moulded into that.

Jax has let himself get lost in it. So what happens if they DO get out? Return to the real world when you've gotten used to nothing mattering?

In the 'Bootleg Toons' storyline, one plot involved Francis teaming up with Oswald Junior the 124th. Technically, Junior is older than Francis, and a bit of a bad influence, but still the two strike up a friendship, with the blue rabbit becoming somewhat of an older sibling figure, especially when he uses Yen Sid's paintbrush to update his design.

Junior embraces the chaos and endless potential the unchecked toon-magic is unleashing on the world, while Francis believes that every toon should be aiming to become as 'grounded' in their concepts as possible...or risk becoming like the Blot, whose character was so vague, if fell apart into an abstract, eldritch abomination.

I noodled up a little scene of Kit being faced with a scary illusion/nightmare by some wizard villain or something - and it's glimpses of the 'real world' metal monstrosities. Or maybe it's me playing around with the multiverse. His only 'real world' incarnation is a puppet with no robotic parts, technically, so as far as he's concerned he's a 'real living animal'.

i only ever watched the first episode of 'don't hug me I'm scared' but I can promise you all, every time I see one of the characters, without fail, in my head will blare:

🍁 + how did kit get mixed up with a pirate crew?

He snuck onto to that there ship.

The canon interaction we get from this character is a rather glum one, in which he's forgotten a gift, and has no idea what to get in the first place. So can't help but figure his backstory's a sadder one.

For some reason I don't reckon he snuck into the ship to become a pirate, like some kids who crave adventure do --- Kit was simply trying to hitch a ride, but was discovered. You know the 90s tagalong kid drill; orphan, alone in the world. How can you abandon those big sad eyes and droopy ears?

Kit Cloudkicker's backstory (from Talespin) keeps popping into my head when imagining ideas for this character. (Maybe it's the pirate thing.) Maybe at some point Kit was even part of a rival pirate crew (that didn't have the power of friendship) and had since fled, finding true companionship on the way. Maybe he was even part of a plot to befriend Foxy's crew, but grew to truly care about them...

so this kid was initially called Sugar Jason (read: sugar basin) but I think 'Caster' works better as a name?

So you know I love a switcher-oo. Putting characters in situations. I picked up the two canon Arkos characters and swapped them around like chess pieces just to see what would happen. And I couldn't help but think of the mild-mannered, patient and happy-go-lucky Tabaluga of the 90s cartoon coming face to face with Isvic.

Rather than treading into his realm, Isvic is dragged from his home to a lonesome ice palace filled with statues and baffled penguins and polar bears. They all assume their boss got a strange make-over. The Greenlanders are confused as to why Arktos is acting so reasonable when he asks for parley, and asks for their help in being sent home.

And Humsin's lot? Dealing with the fun and cheery Toulouse? They're at their wits end. He's being far too friendly, showing them tame magic tricks, and they are unnerved by him.

Of course, having good guys meeting good guys is fun, but Humsin and Arktos from the show going toe-to-tow with Tyrion the Terror...well, isn't so whimsical.

The smile grows shrewd. The worry in the girl's eye is like a sweep of light on glass, easily missed, but he shakes his head.

"Worry not. I threw myself well into the middle before you even knew there WAS a middle."

Inwardly, he hesitates. They're young, and exhausted, and now he's chasing them off onto another adventure. For a dark moment he wonders if he's made a dreadful mistake.

Too late now. Look at him, now he's the old so-and-so sending children off to peril 'for the greater good'.

"You won't be able to do much in this state - but you can rest once you're in the green country. Tyrion has absolutely no reason to harm you yet, and Isvic won't be able to do much at all once you're beyond his border. Isvic cannot...leave Eisworld. Not anymore."

He faces the nearby window, half-covered by the icy curtains, and sighs.

"Centuries ago, there was a terrible battle. Tyrion had come further into Eisworld than ever before. Isvic managed to beat him back, but Tyrion struck him in the core. That injury has lingered with him ever since."

The young dragon already looks like he's been through the wringer, all of them have - but they need to know what kind of creature they're dealing with.

Still, he can't quite meet their eye as he speaks. They don't need this.

"It's as simple as it sounds, I'm afraid. Love and hate are entwined in ways many people don't understand, and both can be powerful. Tyrion has nursed his hate for a long time. When we arrived here, he was just a tot like us. All his life, his own father had been winning. Promising to turn Eisworld into a green paradise like their own. When Isvic appeared and the snow started falling again, they were both...incensed. That was the FIRST reason for his hate, but he's found many, many others over the years. In his mind, Isvic took something belonging to his father."

the young dragon's tonal shift the moment isvic leaves confirms that they were all a little more than rattled .

“ we need to know everything , lou . ” the shadows returning to his scales & under his eyes .

“ yeah . & preferably told lying down . ugh . ” bully facepalms into the bed , immediately regrets it , & settles atop of limbo instead , who's also made himself comfortable with a heavy exhale .

“ i know you're all tired , ” t.abaluga pushes gently as lilli picks the beetle up , gently pressing her lip atop his head to seal away the cold . “ i am too , but there's no time . lou- what you said about his fire . how it's fueled by hatred ... ”

“ -we need to know everything . ” he repeats . lilli kissed him next , & he slightly leans into the touch . “ about him ... & isvic . ”

the maiden asks toulouse if he's also cold with her eyes . t.abaluga steadily blows out a stream of smoke , trying not to look too guilty .

“ i'm sorry for putting ya in the middle like this . but if we're given even a chance to confront that ... that dragon . isvic's gonna have to be kept busy . ”
