Something that gets really lost in a lot of discourse is that what we would now call 'going low-contact' or 'going no-contact' with your family used to be so completely within the normal range of familial contact that there wasn't even a term for it. Sure, in the pre-IM pre-social media days some people were calling their parents daily, but I'd wager the vast majority of people were not. Long distance calling used to be quite expensive, after all. If your kid went to the big city to seek their fortune you might hear from them every few weeks, or every month, or once a year, and that wasn't particularly odd. This was even more the case before telephones were common, of course - people would send letters, but definitely not more than once a week and probably a lot less. It was just a normal, accepted fact that you'd hear from some family members who lived nearby often, and some who lived farther away very rarely.

The minimum amount of contact with family that is expected of people in the groupchat-facetime-instagram era is so much higher than at any previous point in history. The ceiling is about the same, since then and now multiple generations often live under the same roof, but the floor is higher by orders of magnitude.

How many adult children who are 'no-contact' or 'low-contact' now would also have been the ones who moved to the city and sent a letter every three months then? Is family estrangement an actual current problem, or is it just an illusion caused by smartphones?

LRB I'm CONVINCED (through sheer giggly daydreaming) that topmost spire of the NRC castle is pretty much inaccessible save for Crowey having the key to it, or just straight up flying to it with his magic and lockpicking himself in.

It also reminds me of that lookout part of a ship... What's it called? Ah yes, a crow's nest.

I recall a post or three on here noting how Crowley, out of all the staff, seems to really treat NRC as his own "home" (him being around later at night in NRC even when the majority of the ataff have gone home, him going to the cafeteria for a midnight snack like it's his own kitchen, his beloved apple trees, his base card art showing him in office, sitting on hIS DESK, instead of a personal house like Crewel+Trein...) and i would not be surprised if he straight-up lives in NRC after becoming Headmage and if that spire is his literal "nest" with more personal effects,,, his noted "collection" of shiny things, somewhere to kick back and watch TV til late into the night... his own fucking shower.

maybe that's an extra reason why he looks forward to vacations so much? is he literally stuck in his own job's campus for ~a hundred years with no prospect of resigning/retiring anytime soon? is nrc his cage? why did the chairman put him there? who is the chairman?

I've been seeing a lot of posts lately in which the op will complain that people are wildly mischaracterizing their favorite characters.

I feel like it bears reminding that "as long as you can back up your arguments with evidence, there can be multiple, and even conflicting, valid interpretations of the same text" and "just because the interpretation is valid, does not mean you have to internalize it into your understanding of the text" coexist.

I wish the people around me would've understood how much hormones can affect my ADHD symptoms. Some days, I just can't get any work done with how bad my brain fog gets and I feel like all I can do is ride it out (and try to be gentle with myself).

When a small kid decks their shit and starts screaming, it's apparently useful to ask them "are you more scared or more hurt?" because they might actually pause the shrieking to understand that adults might not automatically know what they are feeling, and that they can and should use words to communicate whether they need emotional support or medical attention.

I wonder if it could be applied to tumblr. Asking shrieking people "are you disagreeing with what OP said, or are you mad about the way they worded it?"
