Since the lightning stone seemed to appeal to folks I’ll post another that I found nearby. I think this was at Michigan Dunes State Park. I don’t know enough about lightning stones to say whether or not the vein of mineral needs to be within a darker stone or not to have that name, or if this is just a regular concretion. Maybe a Great Lakes rockhound or geologist can chime in.

Another favorite from my desk rock collection (doesn’t everyone have a bowl of desk rocks?). This was found in Washington state, likely somewhere in skagit county. I’m not awesome on IDs but I think it’s two types of granite? I’d love to hear from folks with a better grasp on what’s what. I’ve always loved the differences in texture and how thin the layer of white granite was.

Posting a lightning stone I found near St. Joseph, MI. It was a super cold rockhounding session in November but I couldn’t miss the opportunity. I found so many of these and cool little fossils. I miss getting to explore the beaches of the Great Lakes.

I think I’ll just post my favorite rock finds here. I was sitting on a beach at Point Roberts, WA, messing around with a watercolor set when this caught my eye. Surrounded by the usual assortment of glacier and surf tumbled PNW beach rocks, it shown like copper in the rare sun. It never photographs nearly as well as it looks, but I love it. It showed up at a time I really needed something beautiful and cheerful to show up.
