8 morning habits for highly successful doctors
Courtesy :Naveed Saleh
However rewarding, nobody said seeing patients all day long is an easy job. Your clinical duties require dedication, concentration, and positivity. With the orders of the job tall, remember that a successful day begins with a successful morning.

Here are 8 ways to start your morning off right.
Wake up early
According to research, 50% of self-made millionaires begin their day at least 3 hours before they set foot in the office, and 90% of executives rise before 6 a.m. on weekdays.
Now, starting early doesn’t necessarily mean the crack of dawn, as evidenced by some of the following early risers:
Apple CEO, Tim Cook, wakes up at 3:45 a.m.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in the gym at 4 a.m.
Virgin-Group founder Richard Branson is up at 5:45 a.m.
“The Oracle of Omaha,” Warren Buffett, opens his eyes at 6:45 a.m.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg first checks his phone at 8 a.m.
Begin planning the night before
Plan out the highlights of what you need to do the next day, and write things down in a prioritized manner. This list will help you keep organized the next day.
Start with the toughie
Imagine that before you drive into work, you have to write a lengthy email to your colleague about a patient. You’re somewhat daunted by this task, knowing that it will take a bit of time. However, it’s best to start with this difficult task before you do anything else.
Please note that if something takes less than 2 minutes to do, then the 2-minute rule takes effect. In other words, prioritize anything that takes less than 2 minutes (like charging your tablet) above anything else.
Disengage from your phone
Of course, you need to check your phone when you first wake up — you don’t want to miss any important messages. But you don’t need to check Facebook shortly thereafter. According to a survey from CareerBuilder, 75% of employers report that at least 2 hours of productivity are lost per day thanks to distraction, and smartphone use and texting accounts for 55% of this time-suck. Why begin your day with a time-suck?
Blue-light special
According to the results of a low-powered study — no pun intended — Korean researchers found that when compared with warm light, 1 hour of exposure to blue-enriched white light on waking boosts alertness, mood, and visual comfort, and decreases melatonin levels. Concerning cortisol — the other important circadian marker in the study — no difference was observed.
The authors concluded that blue-enriched LED light may be an effective countermeasure for morning drowsiness. What are you waiting for?
Exercise
What kind of list would this be without exercise? According to Harvard researchers, regular exercise helps with blood pressure, weight loss/maintenance, energy levels, mood, stress, anxiety, and heart health. Exercise also stimulates brain regions involved in memory and causes the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which rewires memory circuits for the better.
Eat breakfast
In one study, Spanish researchers found that teens who ate a high-quality breakfast experienced the improved health-related quality of life and lower levels of stress and depression compared with those who ate unhealthy breakfasts. Moreover, those who ate unhealthy breakfasts had a lower quality of life and more stress and depression than those who skipped breakfast altogether.
Make time for family
Researchers have shown that parents have the greatest impact on the success of young people by promoting learning vs supporting school activities. In other words, spending time with your family before you go into the clinic not only warms the cockles of your heart but also helps your kids out

An Open letter to my First Patient
5 Years into practicing Dentistry, a well flourishing clinic; I still sometimes go back to the time when I was a final year student, still remembering the names of the techniques and making a mental note of things I will do when (if ) I get a patient. I learned a lot from assisting my final year senior, my teachers, and professors. The intern calls my name, says take over this case and hands me the case sheet. I was overwhelmed with joy and apprehension. Merely an assistant to the interns. I have a patient to do today (YAY ME!!) who was going to work on you today.
You were emotional when you came in, you just wanted a filling done on your “BLACK” front tooth. It was something that seemed to really bother you. I rechecked the case sheet and explained to you what I will do. You were scared of the instruments and the sound my machine made.
I was scared as hell too (don’t expose the pulp, let him rest, where is my articulating paper, SUCTION….awwww I was going crazy on the inside ) I barely made it, My heart was pounding in my chest and my thoughts kept on moving from heart attacks to approval of my filling or to the fact that if the patient realized how scared I was will he jump off the chair and run ? It was my very first procedure and I was scared.
Between these crazy thoughts and me finishing my work, I checked out my work. To be honest I had done a good job.I called my professor to check my work and let me know the changes it needed. (Of course it needed changes, but for a newbie, I Got the “GOOD JOB NOD”
In the end, it was all worth it. When you saw your rotten tooth fixed, you were almost in tears. You were ecstatic and overwhelmed. You were happy. I helped make you happy. Your reaction showed me that my career choice was correct. That what I’ll be doing is going to help people. That the coming years will be worth it in the end. You motivated me and erased any doubt I had that I was maybe in the wrong choice of career. You kept thanking us repeatedly and shook my hand on the way out.
I don’t remember your name, but for the rest of my life, you would be my first patient. Thank you for the motivation.I realized I would not stop, I asked my professors to learn more ask them how to get better at what I do where to learn more. He simply wanted me to be up to date, keep a strong foundation of my basics, create more network, be in sync and NEVER STOP LEARNING.
After I graduated, I came across many apps and forums to keep me engaged and interested in the dental world. One such App is INDIAN DENTAL NETWORK, what I found on that app helped me learn more, it kept me up to date, meet my long lost college friends. I used the app to engage in CDEs, keep myself ahead in the game.
But you; my first patient is still and will always be a source of motivation for me. My heartfelt thanks to you.

7 Practice Management We Can From Joker — the Greatest Villain of All Time
1. IF you are good at something, NEVER do it for free
You put in a lot of years, a lot of hard work and practice to be where you are today DO NOT let anyone think otherwise. If a patient crib for the amount you are charging is exorbitant, make them understand if they don’t, let them go. It’s better to lose one patient than to waste your time dealing with patients who bargain all the time (coz if you give in, the word will spread )
 2. Teamwork
Your team starts from the morning cleaning lady, whom we mostly do not even look at till the end of the month when it’s salary day. She is the one who keeps your clinic clean, dust-free and presentable. Imagine a patient’s reaction to entering a dirty, shady clinic. Your receptionist, assistant and associate doctors are all a part of your team, and it’s always better to spend a little more on a well-trained staff than to waste time on a staff that requires constant training and supervision.
3. What’s your Marketing Strategy?
Mouth to mouth publicity is your best option because that is genuine and only happy, satisfied patients will give your recommendation. I have worked in clinics, where the head dentist, never did anything to advertise herself and she still treats the 3rd generation of the same patients. Work Hard in silence, let your success make noise.
4. Never Give up
So, you had a perforation during root canal, yes a file separated, a tooth fracture during extraction and your pediatric patient won’t sit on the chair Your practice is your dream , Do not let mishaps or a bad day at work put you down , figure out what went wrong ,call a specialist for help , learn new methods , keep yourself updated ,enroll yourself in CDE programs, find ways to keep yourself up to date . Try using the app INDIAN DENTAL NETWORK. It helps doctors stay in their network and mentors to guide you through tough cases.
5. Let The Truth Prevail
Working in the cosmetic industry has its pros and cons. You describe all the treatment protocols, but the patient is still adamant about a Bollywood or Hollywood smile. Understand your patient’s need and be truthful. DO NOT give your patient false hopes that she will look like “Deepika Padukone or Katrina Kaif " after the treatment. Same goes for a patient requiring extensive treatment, do not add another tooth to be treated with each visit, it is appreciated if you share the treatment plan during the first visit. The patient can decide for themselves if they want to get treated for all the findings or just the chief complaint.
6. Are you always available?
There is a new trend in India, where dentists keep their clinics open 24*7, 365 days. You will indeed earn a little more than the doctor who closes his clinic on time and keeps it closed on holidays. But, If you are talented enough, your skills are good it is very easy to maintain work-life balance So what, if a patient goes to the competitor, if you have won the patient’s trust, he will reschedule, he will take time according to you and not vice versa.
7. Never Stop, Never Quit
With the number of dental clinics cropping up, new mushrooming colleges every year, it is a scary scenario. This does not mean that one should quit what they learn, jump over to a new stream. Stay put, work harder, keep your patients happy .success is just a step ahead.

What’s your strategy for Dental Practice?
Planning for the future is a very important step for Dentists. Setting goals keeps the team motivated and focused. What are your long-term goals? If not created, it’s not too late to begin:
Strategic planning:
Strategic planning is creating and designing goals and objectives that will help you reach your long-term vision. When dentists work with clients, they start by laying out clear objectives and goals — with deadlines — that are written and measurable over a five-year period.
Here are a few ideas:
Use this planning process to plan a new direction for your practice.
• Identify five core values- These core values are yours, the owner’s, true beliefs and will likely remain the same for 50 years. Practices need to identify their values and work hard to live up to them every day.
• Set 5–10 specific “major” goals- These goals should be clearly written, measurable, deadline-driven, and assigned to a responsible person.
• Create a vision- Work on answering that single question: Where do you want to be in five years? You should also add in a financial analysis so that you can set realistic goals based on your current situation.
• Create a timeline for goals- Numerous strategic plans have failed because there were no timelines and no accountability. Each step of the plan should have a deadline and a responsible party assigned to carry it out.
Make short term goals — which you are planning to achieve within a year
Long term goals: — which you plan to achieve in 5 years

Measure and monitor the plan — Hold monthly meetings to measure your plan’s progress and timelines. Without a monthly update, fthe ocus will be lost and it’s less likely that you’ll achieve your plan.
Summary
Strategic planning is one of the most fundamental business processes in which you can engage. Follow the steps here to create an effective five-year strategic plan for practice success.
