Diwali: The Significance and Celebration of festival of Lights
Tumblr media
With Diwali 2012 being only a few days away from us, let’s have a sneak peek into the emergence and significance of this grand Hindu festival. In today’s time, when  people are clutched with the hectic schedule of daily life, Diwali gives us an opportunity to take a break and pay thanks to God for what we have. Also known as the ‘Festival of Lights’, the Hindu festival is celebrated in the months of October and November. Going by the mythological stories, it is believed that this day Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after slaying the demon king Ravana who kidnapped her consort Sita. To celebrate the return of Lord Ram with Laksham and Sita, the residents of Ayodhya lighted the city with countless camphor lamps. As per the ancient traditions of Deepawali, one should wake up early in the morning, take oil bath and wear new clothes. On this day, people perform Pooja at their home and the place of occupation, exchange gifts and sweets with friends & family members and thereafter burst crackers and fireworks in the night. The main purpose behind the celebration of this festival is to welcome light and prosperity to your home and get rid of all evil things. The celebration of Diwali stretches for a total of 5 days and all day’s except for Deepawali are named by using the title in the Hindu calendar. Dhanteras:
Tumblr media
                                      Dhanteras Coins
It is the first day of the celebration. Dhan means wealth and Teras means 13th day and this implies that Dhanteras falls on the 13th day of the lunar month. A popular legend associated with this day is that the Dhanvantri (the physician of the Gods) emerged from the ocean carrying a pot filled with nectar. It is an auspicious day for buying gold, silver and utensils. Naraka Chaturdasi: As the name itself says, Naraka Chaturdasi is celebrated on the fourteenth day of the lunar month. Legend has that Lord Krishna slew demon Narakasura. It is the day to eliminate evil and darkness from your life. It is also known as ‘Choti Diwali’. Deepawali:
Tumblr media
                                          Light Lamps
Tumblr media
                                   Rangoli, Decorations
It is the actual day of celebration when the moon completely wanes setting the night in full darkness. Diyas are lighted to eliminate the darkness from home. The whole family together offer prayers at the feet of the goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh- the deity of wealth and obstacles followed by bursting of crackers and fireworks. Govardhan Puja:
Tumblr media
Also known as Annakut, Govardhan Puja is celebrated to commemorate the defeat of Indra by the hands of Lord Krishna. A mountain of food is created that symbolizes Govardhan mountain that was lifted by Lord Krishna to save the residents of Gokul from the anger of Indra. It is also celebrated as the Vishwakarma day in various communities. Bhai Dooj:  It is the final day of the 5 day long Diwali festival. On this day, sisters put vermillion marks on the forehead of their brothers and pray for their long life. Brothers offers gifts as a token of their love. Diwali is not just a festival but a time of joy and happiness spend with friends and families. Similarly the exotic biodiversity and high mountain passes of this country has been quite material in terms of bringing wildlife enthusiasts and adventure freaks. Also a large chunk of tourists visit India with the purpose of leisure and seek solace on the beaches. Listed below are the ten must do things while travelling in India. Tiger Trail
Tumblr media
For all wildlife lovers, a game drive in an Indian wildlife sanctuary is worthless if you fail to spot a royal predator lazing in their natural turf. There are several forest areas in the country that have been converted into the tiger reserves such as Ranthambore National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Kanha Tiger Reserve and Jim Corbett. Ayurveda
Tumblr media
The hectic routine of cities and stress of the daily life has inflicted bad health on the people. To get rid away of your bad health, you may take the route of Ayurvedic healing that is being practiced in India for more than five thousand years. Religion

Religion, faith and belief- these three terms are indelibly etched in the hearts and minds of the Indian people. To witness the same, partake in religious trekking tours such as Vaishno Devi and Amarnath Yatra. Even the annual ‘Rath Yatra’ in Puri  draws countless pilgrims every year. Taj Mahal

A proud passion of Emperor Shahjahan’s love, today, Taj Mahal is visited by thousands of people every year. It took around 20 years and 20,000 craftsmen to build this white marble structure. The Twin Tribute to the Royal Lands of Rajasthan
The sands of the royal state of Rajasthan are a testament to the culture, history, and grandeur that the Rajput state is associated with. Ruled by Rajput warriors as early as the 12th century, Rajasthan continues to fascinate its visitors by virtue of its opulence and hospitality. Chosen among the top 20 world destinations to visit, Rajasthan, along with Kashmir and Kerala, enjoys the maximum tourist footfalls in India. Rajasthan Tourism has played it really smart, I must say. After bringing most heritage properties, palaces and forts under its wings, RTDC launched the Palace on Wheels to capitalize on the booming luxury travel niche way back in 1982. What started as an experiment, became a trend. Soon, IRCTC followed suit and 6 more Indian luxury trains were launched. Besides, the Palace on Wheels, Royal Rajasthan on Wheels is another luxury train that capitalizes on the R factor and has an itinerary that includes excursions to most erstwhile Rajput kingdoms such as Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaipur. In case of the Palace on Wheels, the itinerary further includes Jaisalmer and Bharatpur to provide for an all rounded, cultural experience. Both trains have their interiors themed around the royal state and bear strong influences of the Rajput times. A journey in either is sure to entice you with the sheer luxury on offer.

Golden Chariot Train Destinations
Tumblr media
                                  The Golden Chariot Train
Golden Chariot is the only Indian luxury train that covers destinations in southern region of India. A joint effort of Karnataka State Tourism and Development Corporation (KSTDC) and the Indian Railways, Golden Chariot train chugged on its maiden voyage on 10th March, 2008. Pride of the South and Splendor of the South are two itineraries offered by this luxury tourist train. Both the itineraries offer an exciting mishmash of naturally aesthetic, historically prominent and culturally potent destinations sprinkled across south Indian terrains. In this blog post, I will talk about four destinations that are covered by Golden Chariot during the course of 8 days and 7 nights journey. Goa:
Tumblr media
                                            Goa Beach
A replica of Portuguese culture in the east, Goa has travelled a long way from being a Portuguese colony to cosmopolitan beach destination. The palm fringed beaches, azure Arabian Sea, adventure water sports and eclectic sea food makes Goa an absolute tourist paradise. This tiny India state is visited by 2 million tourists throughout the year. The best time to visit Goa is mid December when the entire state is enthusiastically preparing for Christmas. Kabini:
Tumblr media
                                        Bird at Kabini
A part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Bandipur National Park is situated in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka. Once the private hunting grounds of maharaja of Mysore, it was converted into a tiger reserve in 1973. Around 70 Bengal tigers, 300 bird species and 3,000 Indian Elephants reside in this wildlife sanctuary.  The park is also home to some rare flora species bamboo and timber which include Teak, Sandalwood and Rosewood. Pondicherry:
Tumblr media
                                  Auroville Ashram, Pondicherry
Once a French colony, Pondicherry constitutes of four unconnected districts - Pondicherry, Yanam, Karaikal and Mahe on the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea respectively. The major attractions of this city include French style mansions and Auroville. Kerala:
Tumblr media
                       Kumarakom Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala
Scenic and ethnic, these two words describe Kerala better. The backwaters, greenery, wildlife and salubrious climate persuade travelers to prolong their stay in this God’s Own Country. If the tranquil beauty of palm fringed backwaters doesn’t enchant you, the colonial era edifices will surely do. Don’t miss to watch Vallam Kali race if you happen to visit Kerala in autumn.

“Science without Religion is lame; Religion without Science is blind”- the words of the brainiac scientist Albert Einstein holds true while we talk about India. Every pilgrimage in India bears witness to its thousands of years of existence- these are not just a testimony of this holy land, but are as old as time. On the one hand this land is the melting pot of several religions and their beliefs and on the other it’s the home to the oldest universities of the world- Nalanda and Thakshila. Keeping its traditions and beliefs as the guiding force, the country is reaching new heights and making its existence felt in the international spectrum.
It is the call of spirituality that attracts thousands of pilgrims every year to this land of the Ganges and the Yamuna. It is said that in every corner of this country the Almighty resides in different forms and names. In one place he may be called Badrinath and in another Buddha, but all the forms and names teach us the lessons of humanity only.
Our faith is the only true treasure that we have. In Hindu religion it is believed that the Char Dham Yatra, consisting of Badrinath, Dwarka, Jagannathpuri and Rameshwaram, paves the way to salvation after death. Visiting all the four Dhams is like feeling the true essence of a rich religion. Moreover, a pilgrimage tour to India not only purifies the soul, but unfolds many mystical chapters to the travelers.
A true belief in every religion is the basic mantra that has bind up this multi-religious country to one single thread. Whether you visit the Gurudwaras of Punjab or the Buddhist temples of north India, the Churches of Goa or the Saints’ footprints of the south India, everywhere you will find one common thing and that’s ‘peace’.
There are different holiday packages that give you a chance to spend some spiritual moments in this land and purify the soul amid the holy enchantments. In all these holy destinations, the travelers get a chance to delve into thousands of year old culture of this country. It is the religion that makes this country all the more colorful. Visit the multi-shaded religious places of India and witness the secret spirit of this land.
