“When I first asked my grandma if I could write and publish about her, she gave me an instruction that has stuck with me over the years and I try to always keep it in mind when I write about family. She said, roughly translated from Korean: “you can write what you want, but let us live a little more beautifully the second time.” I took this as permission with a condition that I would fictionalize where necessary, to protect them and myself. The women I write about are both us and not us. Maintaining that fictionalized barrier is important to me.”
— Jihyun Yun, from “you can write what you want, but let us live a little more beautifully the second time": Jihyun Yun in conversation with Nicole Lachat, published Prairie Schooner, March 9, 2023

How would the songs frame the scene?
The woman scats into the microphone like she is serenading a hidden civilization in deep space. This, she says through shoodiddlydoo, is our world for you. She recites our histories and the mission-vision statement in our lingua franca (gibberish), through piano and code and laughter and “That’s all you get” and more. Each syllable that she fires from her lips is a neuron brought to life in someone else’s body, each note a new planet formed.
Outside the theater, soft but incessant hi-hats propel a boy through the streets. He is being chased by a fast food chain mascot, and a man watches this playful pursuit from his balcony, which is spray painted black and coated with a layer of air pollution. He also tries to follow the too-many-note samba, the tune stuck in his toothless mouth and unsure of itself. Until he releases it from beneath his tongue.
