there's a bunch of terminology that isnt super standardized, and in the papers ive seen it's sometimes even used interchangeably. particulate matter/particles/aerosols/aerosol particles/droplets blah blah, but TO ME particulates have a more solid organic connotation while droplets sound more aqueous/watery.
