me: The song “Pierre” (one of the first songs in the musical Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812) changes back and forth from a major and minor key, to represent Pierre’s conflicting mental state. During the lines “I used to be better, I used to be better, I used to be better”, the chords under it move down by half steps, to represent his downward spiral into depression. The song ultimately ends in minor. “The Great Comet of 1812”, the very last song in the musical, utilizes the same chords as “Pierre”, but in major, signifying the end of Pierre’s long-lasting depression, and the start of his new life.
